It’s fucking insane that women can’t even gather. We have to be underground, word of mouth, in the middle of the woods in tents, just to be allowed to speak freely. Doesn’t that feel crazy? Being fired from your college lecturer job for being gender critical is not actually the same as not being allowed to go to school or teach at all.
While these things are really shitty for us, what Afgan women are experiencing is so, so much significantly worse. Let's please avoid trivializing their extreme suffering and blatant oppression in a totalitarian theocratic regime with comparisons to our lives in a weakened - but not failed - democratic republic (yes, it still is).

From a young age, you are told not to hang out with boys and “they only want one thing” and you hear stories in the news of women being kidnapped, assaulted or murdered by men. Or that if you go out, don’t be surprised if your drink is spiked and to take measures to prevent this etc etc. Fathers especially hate the idea of their daughters being around men because they fear for their safety. There is this general idea that is taught to you as a woman, specifically as a young woman (16-24) that there are men out to get you and you need to be very cautious.
But if you say that you’re scared of men, you are immediately met with statements like “don’t say that” “not every man is bad” “you shouldn’t generalise” “well then how do you expect to find a boyfriend?” “what about your dad or brother?” “that’s a little dramatic, don’t you think?”
So which is it? Are we to be scared of men or not?

maybe i'm a little bit biased to talk about this topic as openly as i'd like but as someone who identifies with paganism i consider myself alternative and feminist. i don't think you can be educated enough to say ALL religion is oppressive to women. you can mention verses of the bible like 1 timothy 2:12 (I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet) or ephesians 5:22 (Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.) or verses from the quran like 4:24 (You are forbidden to marry married women except your slave-girls.) or 4:15 (As for those of your women who commit illegal intercourse—call four witnesses from among yourselves. If they testify, confine the offenders to their homes until they die or Allah ordains a different way for them.). of course it's not an unfair question to ask if people who follow books with contents such as these are feminist. a conversation can be had about this but not without tiktokers who can only sensationalize these topics and it makes it hard to have a good, meaningful debate. if these tiktokers can name less talked about religions like some form of satanism or taoism and explain why you can't be a feminist and identify with those religions, i'm all ears. but they only talk about the abrahamic religions and still say all religions are oppressive.
