"why is all the fic in my fandom so short"

maybe the fic writers are tired. maybe they prefer short fiction. maybe they have pets and kids and school or full-time jobs and can't devote 24/7 to writing fanfiction. maybe they write on their phones while commuting and shorter is easier to manage. maybe they write for zines, which by nature have limited word counts. maybe they write slowly. maybe their motivation comes in bursts and they churn out oneshots when that happens. maybe they can't find someone to brainstorm with so they never wrote the fic at all. maybe the last time they posted a longfic they didn't get any comments, or a reader only said "write more" and they gave up. maybe the fandom is toxic. maybe they saw a passive aggressive tumblr post at 5:26am.

I have something to say! Yeah, I'm tired. I am working basically full-time, I have a life (as much as it feels like I don't), I get busy, I get tired, I get burnt out.

I feel so guilty that I don't post more than one fic every couple weeks, but then I just think that whatever I put out— how often I put stuff out, is good enough.

I used to LOVE writing series or longer fics but I can't do it anymore, and maybe it's just me but I love one-shots now. Both writing and reading them. My attention span sucks and I swear talent shines when you have to wrap everything up in 2-5K words.

I fluctuate between the two moods, honestly. Of feeling guilty and then not. Idk, I'm just a human sometimes.

I'm with you on one-shots. They're so satisfying to write. And I think you're smart to publish when you feel like it and feel up to it, and no more often. I used to crank out fics. Now I publish stuff a few times a year. Your health and general wellness are far more important than adhering to an impossible schedule that will only lead to more burnout.
