Movement Telephone #3
Me imitating myself imitating myself imitating the ocean

Imitating myself imitating the ocean
Movement Telephone #1
Imitation of a video of a wave crashing on the beach.
Today I decided I would become a troll. I traveled across Highland quad and to Lewis dorm, receiving giggles from the security guards, other residents, and myself as I traveled to check on my laundry. I loved sporting this new hairstyle and will definitely bring this style out during summer camp this year.Â
I decided I would make my instagram feed a real thing and posted it outside of my dorm room to see if any of my roommates would be interested int it
Embarrassing Object(s)
I decided to combine 2 embarrassing things in my life: -Medication I take which makes me feel silly for having to take it -Crumpled up newspaper: this symbolizes my lack of knowledge and informedness with politics and world news
And one embarrassing thing about our world: -the fact we still make plastic bags when we know how harmful they are for the environmentÂ
To top it off, I created the background with my two least favorite colors.Â
The Art Assignment: Body in Place
I have always been a bath person. I have never actually understood why people prefer showers to baths. Throughout my ever-changing, busy life, baths were always the things that held me together and let me calm my mind at the end of the day. Whether I had a good day or a bad day, I always ended it with my me-time in a nice hot bath.Â
A bath is where life worries go away. It is the muffled silence of running water. It is soaking away all of the stress and anxiety that build up in the minutes and hours of the day.
I wish others would harness and appreciate the wonders a bath can do for the body and mind.Â
The Art Assignment: Measuring Histories
The hardest part of my personal history to imagine (or to even still think of as real) is the passing away of my Grammy. I can’t say that I have yet to come to terms with her passing, or that I ever quite will, but through the past ten months of experiencing the first death in my family that I was old enough to process, I have felt a train of emotions that are hard to quantify. This is why I measured the ten months since her passing each with different objects. There is no way that the time could be represented by the same unit or marker.
The pushpin is for the immense pain I felt.
The teardrops are for the most water shed by my eyes in my entire life.
The rubber band is for the beginning push and pull of crazy emotion, feeling like everything was normal until my emotions snapped and I was overcome with the reality.
The plug is for the shock to reality I still feel when I really think about it for too long.
The happy clip is remembering to think about and hold onto all of the happy memories and experiences.Â
The “Eat Dessert First” magnet is for carrying on Grammy’s tradition of eating leftover pie the day after a holiday, this Thanksgiving.Â
The figurines holding hands is for each and every one of my family members and friends who were and are there for me to give me a hug and to check in on me.
The Christmas decoration was experiencing my first family holiday without her.Â
The sand dollar is for when my Gramps laid sand dollars on the beach for me and my cousins to “find” this January, just as Grammy did for us throughout our entire childhoods.
Finally, the picture is one I found looking through photo albums at her and Gramps’s house, and shows the beginning of a special bond that I will always hold near to my heart.Â
Stuck in the Media and Want to Escape
For the Art Assignment: What’s Your Problem? I honestly had difficulty in choosing a problem to ask someone to help me solve, only because thinking about problems in my life, I honestly was a bit timid to try this approach with something super serious in my life, so I went with a more superficial problem.
Ever since I had gotten my Facebook account in 8th grade, I have been addicted to social media. Not only has my amount of social media accounts grown (now one more with this tumblr) but also my attachment to checking them for what seems like mostly worthless information has grown too. I find myself looking at Instagram when I had just closed the app a minute earlier, and hadn’t even realized I had reopened it. The idea that using and looking at social media has become such a habit that I do it without consciously realizing it is honestly a bit frightening. Additionally, I use social media as a way to procrastinate from school work which I would also like to cut down on that.Â
Therefore, I asked my friend who does not have a huge social media presence and also does not check her social media often to help me with this problem. She gave me a few ideas. First, she said to put my phone on airplane mode when studying or spending time with people. Being disconnected from the internet also means being disconnected from social media. When I told her that I have tried this before and it had not worked, she mentioned to me that there were apps that you could download on your phone to block other apps on your phone for periods of time which you could set. I really enjoyed this idea because knowing myself, even if I say I won’t go on social media, I will go on it.Â
I then went home and googled “social media blocking apps” and after downloading many, kept two that I think will serve me well. One app allows me to block other apps on my phone for a designated amount of time that I choose to set. This will help me stay off of social media as I study, as well as possibly block myself from checking it for the entire day. This will help my self control because in essence, I will not even have to use my self control. The other app I downloaded allows me to track the amount of time I spend on my phone and specific apps both daily and weekly. By being able to monitor the actual hours and minutes I spend on various apps, I hope to be encouraged to use them less.Â
I know that these apps will make me aware of the time I spend on social media which. If I instead begin to spend my time elsewhere, I believe I can have a more mentally healthy college existence. Ultimately, getting another person’s opinion on this problem was extremely helpful and after having this “guinea pig” problem addressed with this process makes me way more willing to open up to get help with larger, more intimate problems in my life.Â
