BOOK OF THE DAY:
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Traditionally taught at school, we know the conception that many students have about this book. So we ask that you please reserve your yawns for somebody else. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is one of the most important contributions in twentieth century literature. Following the tale of Okonkwo, a young man famous for his strength and wrestling abilities in his village, he is admired for his loyalty, labor, and loyalty. Following cultural norms, Okonkwo has children, wives and works on the land.
Viewed as the hero of his tribe, Onkonkwo is deeply flawed. He beats his wives, he suffers from hubris, yet simultaneously behaves as the anti-hero and hero of this story. When Christian missionaries arrive at his village to “civilize” its people, his sacrifice makes him a hero.
Although we would not recommend this book for everybody, we suggest it to anybody who has an interest in politics or anthropology. A deeply political conversation exists in the pretext of the novel. Achebe’s message is explicit and profound. Authentic and real, and by real we mean, it speaks about a relevant topic in our society, racism; Achebe has created one of the most multidimensional characters we have ever read. Note, we are extremely frank with you. You will dislike Onkonkwo for his evil deeds, but recognize the extremities and artistry Achebe has allocated in one being. Before you read this book, come out of your shell. Any sort of ethnocentrism should be obliterated. It demands to experience a world vastly different from your knowledge.
