The Sorting Hat in Real Life

As a four way hatstall, I understand the psychology and differences of all the houses and am able to put them into a format that applies to real life situations.

Okay, but for real, I hope at some point they do remake the Harry Potter franchise, mostly because I want to see the characters be their actual ages. God bless Alan Rickman, but something hits differently about realizing those characters were barely out of their twenties when the series started. Give me mid-30s Bellatrix Lestrange. Let it set in how dark the books are in reality. Show me a 50 year old cult leader convincing teens and twenty-somethings to commit genocide, and the 19 year olds fighting them. Show me Lily and James Potter younger than I am. Give. It. To. Me.

I know that it is irrational to place a whole type into a Hogwarts House, but where would you most likely place a stereotypical 8w7. Most posts I see can't decide between Slytherin or Gryffindor. (I personally would even count in a passionate Ravenclaw as an option, because of the tendency to search for truth)

Okay, so here's the thing. I love enneagram to death. To. Absolute. Death. And have an obscene amount of knowledge on that topic, but I think the houses would just manifest differently based on enneagram/tritype of the person, rather than being only in certain houses. I would think more Gryffindor than Slytherin because I'd associate Slytherin more with a 9 wing (goes back to Gryffindor being more open with anger).

But again, I'd say there's not really hard rules here. The Gryffindor I've personally known have been 8w9, 9w1, and 5w6.

Slytherin have been 1w2, 4w3, 3w2.

Hufflepuff have all been 6, 2, or 9.

Ravenclaw is 4, 9s, and 5s that I've known.

But legit, use these two systems TOGETHER to enrich your understanding of yourself instead of trying to type in one system by using the result you got in the other

Hi! I was just wondering if you done the sortinghatcharts official quiz? If so what did you got?

For a primary, I was tied between Slytherin and Hufflepuff, and Hufflepuff secondary, which is what I had expected. It’s a good test, but I feel like it’s an overly convoluted typing system that negates the main point of the sorting hat, which is to put you into one single house. Just my personal opinion

About the houses’ inclination to devotion (and falling for people in power), could you maybe go over the reasons why each house would do that?

Hufflepuff will straight up deny the negative characteristics of the person they are falling for who is bad for them.  A lot of spinning negative traits/behavior into justified actions so they feel like the partner is a better person.

Slytherin will romanticize the relationship in itself, and focus in on the all-consuming toxicity that they see is present.  They will fixate on how it’s going to eat them up, destroy them, and then crash and burn.

Gryffindor will convince itself that the things that happen are a part of experiencing life, and that if they want to positives, they also have to accept the negatives. Will lash out at anyone who tries to point out the relationship is toxic.

Ravenclaw will mistake the toxic behavior for ‘quirkiness’ or ‘uniqueness’, and will feel like the negative behavior is an expression that the partner is ‘one of a kind’

Which Hogwarts House do you think has the greatest "need to belong"?

I feel like this is another thing that could be any house for different reasons.  I’ll answer it as which house will take the most sh*t before giving up on ‘their people’.  It’s hands down Slytherin because Slytherin values loyalty to their own people above everything else, even their own needs and wants.  It expects that their people hold the same devotion towards them, and it is very difficult for them to recognize when this is not the case.

Which Hogwarts House do you think is more inclined to devotion? To fall completely for a person they know they can never have, because they fall explicitly for people in power that only have a raised eyebrow for them? Strange question, I'm well aware of that, but yesterday in a Pen & Paper Session that question came to mind because of the character I play.

Oof that’s tricky.  I think house sorting depends on further characteristics because I think any of the houses could do this for different reasons.  Equally, any of the houses could have reasons for NEVER doing this.

How would you go about sorting someone with a personality disorder. I know there have been discussions about gryffindors with anxiety and depression, but I feel that personality disorders greatly affect someone's behavior and traits--even their incentives to reach goals. A lot of that is kinda obstructed, I guess? So would you sort someone based off of their behavior, regardless of the fact that some of it is part of their disorder (though, at the same time, it's still their personality)?

I sort about 50/50 each on both behavior and motivation.  We might not be able to act out or goals and motivations as much as we’d like when a mental illness or personality disorder is involved, so that’s why it’s not all just based on actions.  A slytherin is still a slytherin even if they’re too depressed to be able to do anything, because we have to look at the things they prioritize.

idk if this has been asked before but which enneagrams do you think generally fit into which hogwarts houses?

If I could only pick one house for each:

Slytherin: 1, 3 (both hard working, both ambitious)

Ravenclaw: 4, 5, 6 (different from others, emphasis on knowledge / thought)

Hufflepuff: 2, 9 (helpful and agreeable)

Gryffindor: 7, 8 (adventurous, risk-taking, pleasure-seeking)

Why Slytherin and Gryffindor Either Hit it off Immediately or Hate One Another

Contrary to popular belief, Slytherins and Gryffindors can be friends. How frequently that happens is questionable.  Between the four houses, the most unlikely friendships are between Gryffindor and Slytherin because they are both very... rigid, compared to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff being more on the flexible side.  Any other combination either matches two flexible dispositions or a flexible and a rigid.  Gryffindor/Slytherin, however, either results in immediate friendship or no such thing.  There is no middle ground here. 

Why? Due to a number of factors.  Firstly, these two houses have contrasting ways of achieving their goals, which is often a source of conflict.  Secondly, their goals tend to be polar opposites, as they usually have different belief systems and worldviews.  Thirdly, they both have strong personal beliefs to which they hold.  Finally, Gryffindor tends to be argumentative, and Slytherin gets petty when it feels attacked.

There is really only one case in which this friendship is successful: When values and beliefs are shared.  In this case, the two houses can form a powerful team in which they’re both working towards a goal that is important to them, and conflict is minimized.  These friendships usually must continue to share value systems, or will fall apart (as seen in the case of Lily/Snape in canon, though that’s a horrible example). 

If there is no shared value system, Gryffindor will tend to chastise on the initial meeting by aggressively questioning or criticizing Slytherin’s values, and Slytherin, becoming defensive, will start to attack Gryffindor’s.  

If they do share important values, they will immediately hit it off and will have extremely positive, energetic interactions.

Just like Slughorn, Albus Dumbledore collects people. Only, instead of focusing on those with influence, he looks to the outcasts.

He protects them and gives them a second chance. All he asks in return is their loyalty.

And, if on occasion he requests that they undertake a certain task, invoking their debt of gratitude - well, that is no more than he is owed.

He once thought to add a certain disowned Black to his collection, but quickly realised his mistake.

Sirius is not an outcast, but a rebel. He knowingly chose his path, and chooses what price he is willing to pay for it. He refuses to be used.

So Albus Dumbledore abandons him.

Dumbledore knows Sirius’s loyalty lies with Harry instead of him, and he has no use for someone who is not willing to follow his orders without question.

This is genuinely the reason that I hate Dumbledore more than any other character in the series.  At least Voldemort was open about being a villain, but Dumbledore?  

No, Dumbledore likes to pretend to be your friend.  Whether you agree with Snape being from hell or having done no wrong, you can agree with this.  

If you’re a child who has grown up emotionally and physically abused, you cling to friends or whatever people take an interest in you.  Whomever happens to pick you out and says ‘hey, you can come with us’, makes you feel worthy and protected.

Unfortunately, Snape made really shitty decisions as a 15-18 year old. But really, think about it. 19.  19 years old.  You’re about the age of a college freshman, just out of high school. He still has a high school crush, someone he idolized for being his first real friend through all the childhood abuse. She dies, he feels (perhaps rightly) that it’s his fault.

He goes to Dumbledore, who proceeds to use this feeling of guilt for the next 20 years to hold it over him and leverage exactly what he wants.  You need him to risk his life?  Make him feel obligated to Harry, to Lily. He takes an abused child who is no more than a year or two out of living in that situation and emotionally abuses him. Instead of trying to assist him, perhaps helping him to live a psychologically normal life, he uses him for his own reasons.  From 20 to 40 is a very long time, and you can grow to have a life at 19.  If you stay in a situation every single day where you’re being manipulated and you don’t realize it, the years go by, and you become bitter and resentful. 

Much like Harry in book 5. But Dumbledore wanted to help harry then, because if Harry stayed in those feelings, how could he be used?  He needed to feel a love towards these people, which would stem from goodwill.  Snape needed to follow orders, and would only if he felt obligation; you need to be kept in a negative, bitter state if you’re going to try infinitely to redeem yourself.

The Houses When Faced with a New Opportunity or Experience

Well, I lived through the hurricane, so here's a post to celebrate.

Slytherin: Asks if the opportunity is in any way beneficial to achieving their goals or getting where they want to be in life (does this help me). If not, but enjoys it, will absolutely do it.

Hufflepuff: Do I want to do this? Will this improve me as a person? Is there a personal meaning I have for wanting to do this?

Gryffindor: Mostly based on enjoyment, but wants to do it if it'll be a good story to share. Almost like a bucket list thing of just embracing the opportunity.

Ravenclaw: Usually wants to test out what kind of actions in the experience will yield different results, or experience it for a kind of personal mental documentation of the experience.
