Is it accurate that extroverted functions are shallower than introverted ones?Ā
No.Ā āShallowā is a negative judgment.
Introverted functions are subjective, meaning unique to the person using them, and something enjoyable to ponder within themselves, whereas extraverted functions are objective, meaning they interact with the real world as it exists and then use it as a launching point for action.
And that they are more changeable?Ā
They are more adaptable to external reality, yes. Think of Se being current on trends, whereas a Si only buys this kind of tennis shoe because they like it, for example. One isĀ āthe world has moved on from those shoes I liked, so Iāll find a new pairā and the other isĀ āthese shoes have always served me well and are to my taste in things.ā
What would being an extrovert vs introvert imply then?Ā
Extraverts shift with change in the outside world and get on board with it quicker than introverts. They are also attentive to the outside world 24/7, and aware of what is going on around them, emotionally, logically, physically, or intuitively, depending on their dominant function.
Are extroverts more adaptable and realistic, whileĀ introverts more resistant to accepting reality as it is?Ā
Sometimes, yes. But being realistic is tied to their extraverted functions. An ENFP may be more realistic than an INFP thanks to high Te, but they are also dominant idealists who may not realize the implausibility of executing their ideas in the real world, a problem ETJ and ESPs donāt struggle with.Ā
As an extrovert what do you notice as a difference between you and the introvert people in your life?Ā
When something unexpected happens, it takes them longer to process it and to decide what to do, whereas I am pretty fast in adapting to it and changing my plans. I also get a lot moreĀ ādoneā in a short amount of time than they do, thanks to my large energetic resources (assuming sensory stuff is not zapping them; at home, I am a super-charged bundle of energy, and in a busy environment, I am quickly depleted since my sensing function is so low).
What is the role of introversion vs extroversion in self-perception? Are introverts more self-aware?Ā
They do not seem to be, no. The vast majority of people I have talked to in the typology community were oblivious to their own motivations until they found the Enneagram; most of them did not self-type accurately at first, in that or in MBTI, because their sense of self differed from their actual self. (This is not a negative judgment, just a fact. People will say they are A while they actually are doing B or C all the time.) A handful get themselves right.Ā
Do you think extrovert have an easier time typing themselves?Ā
No, if anything they assume they are introverted because they need some down time unless their extraversion is extreme.
What about your readers? Do you notice any pattern in the asks you receive?Ā
Yes. Most people donāt read the archives before asking something that has been answered many times. ;) I am always being questioned about Si vs Se, Fe vs Fi, Ti vs Te, Ne vs Ni. The top asked thing is probably Fe vs Fi, how to tell them apart, doesnāt everyone do that?, how can I tell which I am, etc. Itās normal, because most people canāt understand until they get deeper into typology systems what inward facing function means and what outward facing function means, and it seems to be hard for them to understand the functions they are not using. I admittedly do notĀ āgetā Ti and Fe as well as I grasp Fi and Te.Ā
What makes a person more world-accepting versus world-rejecting?
Their introverted functions, of which everyone has two.Ā
Ā Is idealism a marker of every intuitive or is it related to the judging axis?
It seems to be primarily related to Ne. A lot of NJs I have known were very cynical and had negative views of certain people, thanks to Se being more pragmatic andĀ āthis is who they are, I can see them clearlyā in a Ni and Se sense, than the idealism of NeĀ āthere are many ways why they may have been mean to meā and SiĀ āwe have such history together...ā
