The Hessdalen Lights
Today's subject is the Hessdalen lights! They are an unexplained, recurring phenomenon in the Hessdalen Valley in Central Norway. These unusual lights, appearing in various colors, have been spotted in both the day and nighttime skies since the 1930â˛s.Â
The duration of the phenomenon varies from a few seconds, to minutes, or over an hour. The lights have been seen in shades of white, yellow, and red. The lights seem to silently hang in the air or drift back and forth most of the time, but have also been reported to move at extreme speeds.
The lights were most active between 1981-1984, where they appeared 15-20 times per night. In 1983 UFO-Norge and UFO- Sweden (two groups dedicated to UFO research), began researching the lights in a project dubbed âProject Hessdalenâ. This project stayed active from â83-â85.
In 1997â1998 another group, comprised of students, journalists, and engineers, collaborated on âThe Triangle Projectâ. They recorded the lights arranged in a triangular shape and bouncing up and down.Â
Later in 1998, members from Project Hessdalen constructed a measurement station in the valley to record the lights automatically. This station includes optical cameras, a random number generator, magnetometers, weather gear, and equipment for measuring low frequency electromagnetic radiation. The auto station has found that the lights typically appear between 9pm and 1am, and occur more frequently in the winter months.Â
Several ideas of what the lights could be have been brought up, but nothing has been proven yet. The lights still occur, though not as frequently. They are recorded about 20 times per year.Â
