For just a second, that bravado slipped when he looked at Loki. He knew only what Heimdall had been able to tell him about the attacks, and it was nothing specific. From what he could gather from the shield maiden’s words, it was worse than he’d thought. He didn’t know why disappointment and grief should swell in him in equal measure at the knowledge, but it did. “What have you done?” he said softly, an expression of despair more than a real question. Why Loki insisted on destroying himself at every turn, he’d never understand.
He turned back to the other two, noticing the soldier’s easy stance, and his own posture eased to something less threatening. It was a calm, reasonable voice that asked if they could return to the sky to talk over the options. Thor didn’t feel particularly reasonable, and the sky rumbled with his displeasure, but if they could settle this diplomatically, they should. It was probably a strategy he should try more often. “Agent Coulson is a friend,” he said finally. “If he vouches for you, then I trust his word. No harm will come to Loki, and when your home is safe again, he will return to Asgard to face justice.”

Toni wasn’t one to trust easily, or at all really, and her very, very tight circle was a clear indicator of that. People liked to class it as ego or arrogance, she thought of it as protecting herself. The switch in his demeanor made her eyes narrow, but she knew that they needed to try. She agreed, with the caveat that he keep his thunder and lightning to himself. “Not once have we shown an intent to harm him,” she all but snapped in clear annoyance. He might deserve it, but she wasn’t a monster. “Let’s go then, so we can all get what we need and go on about our lives without any more Shakespearean drama.” She stepped back towards Steve, “I’m trusting you to bring Loki. Just now that I don’t handle betrayal well.” She held out a gauntleted hand to Steve, her gaze staying steady on Thor.
