So I might just be slightly more than halfway through Gorenger...
Time doesn't exist anymore.....
Since my last vomit of thoughts we have had 34 episodes of cheesy musical stings, ever more bizarre villains, and zolders making silly noises. Excellent stuff.
I love my darlings if anyone ever hurts them I will riot. I did not realise how much I needed new Comfort Characters but boy have most of these found a way into my heart.
We have had COSTUME CHANGES for the gorengers civilian clothes, all except Peggy which I find very funny because its normally the girls who get stereotyped as obsessed with fashion. I do prefer them from the first half of the series but I do admit I am a sucker for first seen good change bad. We do love seeing the passage of time though especially with aka's hair growing out.
Speaking of change boy does this show have more budget to play with now. The explosions are bigger, Snack Gon has had a very mid 70's makeover, and rip variblune there are new mechs in town! varidreen is very cool looking and its nice that all the gorengers can fit in her cockpit now WHASHDJ and we love her and varitank's theme. Varitank sees alot more action and you can tell the writers had alot of fun defying physics with her. The size comparison between the gorengers in vs standing outside the varitank gives me LIFE, and i do get slightly concerned she's going to fall apart at any moment. Shout out to when the varitank was disguised as a huge money printing machine icon behaviour.
My favourite ranger from the series has to be Ao/Shinmei despite being conveniently to the side of many of the plots when he gets focus its always great and he is just played so well. This hot-headed guy will do anything for his team and you better not mess with his machines. Peggy has definitely gotten some of the best character epsiodes, with one of the highlights being when she was brainwashed and couldnt transform into momo. She is the go to for upgrading the gorenger's attacks and diffusing so. many. timebombs. I do love her and mido's teamups they have a really sweet dynamic. Mido really is the baby of the group, he is desperate to prove himself and will act rashly when he thinks he has let the team down. If something happens to mido, the rest of the team would to anything to protect him. Despite the strongest start, Ki hasnt developed loads watching him joking around with the rest of the group is always fun and sweet to watch. Aka is definitely the most serious of the group, often speaking with the commander alone, and bears the responsibility of the gorengers which you can see weighs heavily on him. Its a shame his brother is never really brought up again, that was a pretty interesting backstory, but his side glances to Shinmei and his Tired Dad Energy are all excellent. So sad he didnt get to go on holiday he probably needed it most haha.
We also have a temporary new ki, he doesnt seem to be hugely competent as a gorenger yet, but we'll have to see as the episodes go on...
i absolutely LOVE 007!!! We havent seen much of the other EAGLE agents that used to hang around Snack Gon but if it means we get more 007 I will never be upset. Her relationship with Taro her little brother and the rest of the gorengers is so interesting. There have been hints about them loosing their parents and 007 is clearly Taro's only guardian, and it is so lovely to see the gorengers look after them and include them as family.
The villains are just getting sillier and sillier and you get no opposition from me I'm here for a whimsical time. After Sun Halo Mask's very short run we have Iron Man Mask General Temujin who is our first named general from the Black Cross Army. It was very cool that all his villains were metal themed which gave villains like Pirate Mask a much more unique look. It was also very fun to see him degrade into a Petty Bitch and his downfall was one of the most cathartic of the show.
Volcano Mask's command of the moving fortress Navarone marked him out well though its a shame we never got to see its full potential. Love that he got killed by boiling an egg. The New Commander-in-Chief Golden Mask hasnt had much to do yet but he has a long run coming up.
We now have the Big Reveal of the Black Cross Fuhrer's True Form which is very cool to look at but does slightly restrict his movement so we have a lot less shoulder shrugs. He also is now allowed to go outside which is nice for him I guess.
One of the less ideal things about this show is it is not too subtle with the N*zi imagery. I have got to be fair I have no idea how this subject is treated in Japan, but it does sometimes veer into the yikes territory for me personally.
I'm quite surprised I'm not feeling the length as much as I thought I would, maybe its because I havent shorter shows yet or years of watching classic who have prepped me for long hauls aksjkdhdk.
Anyway, I think I started watching the show at a great time for me, it is some much needed whimsy and I am having so much fun with it!!!!
