Sometimes I wonder, why name your baby "Alastor"?
I know that it's an actual name but there is no way it was that popular back then, not to mention Alastor means "Avenger" so what is there to avenge?
It apparently wasn’t popular during Alastor’s time, but I think it could be pointing to what makes Alastor’s soul unique.
I truly hope it is his real name and not just an alias. Because in world where so many are using alias, it stands out more for Alastor to use his real name.
Probably out of universe it's another reference to Aleister Crowley, the British occultist.
AC's actual name at birth was Edward Alexander Crowley, but he changed it at university. According to him:
For many years I had loathed being called Alick, partly because of the unpleasant sound and sight of the word, partly because it was the name by which my mother called me.
Amusingly compared to Alastor, Aleister didn't get on with his own mother.
I had read in some book or other that the most favourable name for becoming famous was one consisting of a dactyl followed by a spondee, as at the end of a hexameter: like Jeremy Taylor. Aleister Crowley fulfilled these conditions and Aleister is the Gaelic form of Alexander. To adopt it would satisfy my romantic ideals.

'Alastor' is meanwhile another spelling of the same name, and the name of a poem ('Alastor') by Percy Bysshe Shelley, which Aleister Crowley was fond of and would probably have read.
Alastor is just generally now a name that is associated with cults and so on thanks to AC's participation in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which was a major occult group in fin de siècle Britain. Yeats was a part of it for a while, as was Arthur Machen (the author of 'The Great God Pan'), Algernon Blackwood ('The Wendigo') and the wife of Oscar Wilde, Constance Wilde.
The approach I took with the Alastor I write in fics/in my own writing was that he was named for his white father, whose family originally came from Europe - just in a bid to make that fit with a man raised in New Orleans. Something along the line of 'Dad wants to highlight his very white background/European roots for clout,' type thing.

even more random Alexander / Human Alastor headcanons
Alexander has always been left-handed and they tried to "train" it out of him (a common practice well into the 70s in some places). He's been working to try and "reclaim" that part of him by writing left-handed again, but it's all been such a mess and neither option is perfect. Or very good!
He does do the stabbing right-handed, though, since he was taught to cook that way and is used to handling knives right-handed
Before he began his murdering career, he got good and prepared! He did some weight training in secret, lifting heavy bags of rice and beans and flour so he was ready to haul around bodies with ease. He's secretly quite cut under those fancy lil suits!
Alexander was always something of a perfectionist in the radio studio, sometimes working late to do edits on his scripts himself
This was also partly because the studio refused to hire him an assistant even though most others of his rank and position had one. It was a fairly obvious attempt to overwork him until he quit, but he was just too resilient.
If anyone asked if he had an assistant, though, he would insist on introducing them to "Maria"... the name for his beloved Underwood typewriter. He used it so often (like for editing scripts), some of the keys were worn. He also insisted "she" was the hardest worker in the entire studio
Alexander was one of the few men in America who freaking hated Charles Lindbergh and found the baby murder thing hilarious
He regularly keeps vials of low-grade sedatives in his inner waistcoat pocket for when people start to ask too many questions or he thinks they might tail him on the way to a murder. Just enough to make them want to go home and lie down instead, there's a dear~
For all that he's quite handsome, Alexander oddly photographs terribly. He never quite sits still long enough for the long-developing film to capture him properly, he's oddly quite blurry in most photos. It made the job so much harder for later historians and true crime podcasts...
A part of his fame and charm and keeping up appearances meant Alexander had a bitchin' whip, some real Gatsby nonsense. He'd roll up to the studio in a shiny red Packard Twelve with the top down. He also customised it to have a radio, which was a premium option at the time
