Sometimes I come across posts trying to give half-a-dozen explanations regarding 'Hikaru's actions towards Old Lady Matsuura, and I think what has been bothering me about it is that these often come off as defanging 'Hikaru'.

I have long believed that what was shown of Old Lady Matsuura's death was part true ('Hikaru' did go looking for her with the intent to kill her and silence her) and part hallucination. It aligns with what 'Hikaru' told Yoshiki following the incident with Asako about how humans lose their minds when he gets involved. "Their minds can't even grasp something so incomprehensible, so they die all on their own", in short terms, is very classic horror. But ultimately, 'Hikaru' is a very powerful entity existing outside of all human logic. There's not much else to say besides "'Hikaru' doesn't operate in a human framework, thought this woman was going to bust him, and he didn't understand what the big deal was on killing her when the important part (soul) remained intact": Humans don't usually feel bad when they kill a fly that's bothering them with an electric racket, either.

The reason why 'Hikaru' didn't kill Yoshiki when he discovered him was because Yoshiki promised him that he would not tell anyone that he wasn't the real Hikaru, but had Yoshiki's reaction being different, 'Hikaru' would've also killed him. 'Hikaru' stopped trying to kill anyone else who could expose him because it made Yoshiki upset, not because 'Hikaru' himself found it particularly egregious: Even giving Yoshiki a half of his insides was meant to weaken him and prevent further killings, but he admitted to not understanding from the point of humans several times.

Much of Yoshiki's internal conflict arises from his desire to be with 'Hikaru', despite the fact 'Hikaru' can and has killed people. Yoshiki didn't try to put 'Hikaru' down like a dog out of hatred that one time, and he didn't make that choice following any of the times 'Hikaru' almost killed him; Yoshiki made that choice following the near-fatal incident with Asako. He was forced to face the danger that an entity like 'Hikaru' posed to society, and the reality that 'Hikaru' could inflict on other people the same pain of losing someone that he himself was experiencing after Hikaru's death.

Part of Yoshiki's resolution after Runa's incident, culminating with 47.2, was accepting the reality that 'Hikaru' would never be human. Giving 'Hikaru' the half of his insides back, saying "I love you more than anything", includes over the effects of mixing and over what would theoretically be best for society. As much as it's true that 'Hikaru' is the only one capable of closing the holes, that falling into the human realm incidentally kept most of the impurities at bay for years, and that no longer being split into two should make him more stable and less prone to accidents, that doesn't exclude the other parts.

Honestly, people don't talk enough about the fact that Yoshiki had a very good idea that 'Hikaru' was responsible for Old Lady Matsuura's death, and kept acting as if it hadn't happened for two more volumes. Or that 'Hikaru' being half of himself might have played a part on him being unable to defend himself back when he was ambushed in the Darumazuka Tunnel. Or that he didn't want to accidentally kill anyone while actually fighting back. I could be wrong, and 'Hikaru' could have also been shocked and confused, or even too much in pain since they actually cut through his real form and not just Hikaru's body, but I have a hard time believing that a blanket can actually do much for long enough against an Illegitimate.

But going back to the original topic, I also see people trying to course correct sometimes by arguing that 'Hikaru' only killed one person, that Asako and Runa were fine, and I wonder if they don't remember about this one conversation between Toshinori and Kouhei.

This was 'Hikaru's doing too. Since this was long before he was actually involved with human society, and lacked that framework of things, the Indou ancestor told him "Take all the heads you want", and he interpreted it as something that he had to do as part of what was being wished for. Understandable from that point of view, but again, understanding doesn't detract from the fact that he killed a third of the villagers.

(I'm actually a little interested in this last part. I sometimes have wondered if it was influenced by the hole, in the same way that Tatsuya was influenced by the hole into taking Iori's sight away. We will see)
