Les Catacombes - Paris 2012

400 ft below the surface of Paris exists one of the scariest and coolest places on earth. The bones of over 6 million people are still interred here. Now they are organized and placed respectfully, but in the beginning the officials of Paris were just cleaning up the surface of the city by dumping the remains from full graveyards into the old rock quarries that built the city. Spooky! Great place to pop the question to your girlfriend!

All of the photos in this set were long exposures with no flash. If you ever get to go, don’t forget the remote and/or tripod!

The Smoked Corpses of Papua New Guinea

In Papua New Guinea charred corpses are placed on cliffs. It serves not only as an effective method to scare away strangers but it’s also a high honor to the dead. These watchers are believed to be the guardians of the village. The most-respected warriors are placed on special lookout points on the cliffs, watching out for invaders. They are sometimes brought down for special events and celebrations, and returned soon after. Here is the source and where you can read about the embalming process. The practice was frowned upon by the Catholic church and has been banned since 1975. Although some do practice it in remote areas.
