In a Social Science Class as we were discussing the Right to Equality as a part of fundamental rights, me and my class got to discuss the problem of Gender and Gender stereotypes. It showed me how deeply rooted gender roles and stereotypes are even in the minds of children. Towards the end of discussion, I gave them an assignment, they had to write how their life would be "If they were a Boy/Girl". This is one answer. She believes that she can only go to tuition alone if she was a boy without people worrying about her. She can "dress" a particular way only if she was a boy. She resonates with many girls out there who feel the same. I'm so glad I've got my kids to question and understand gender stereotypes. The biggest challenge preventing educational equity is the lack of access and exposure. Children in Government schools are only taught their curriculum. They don't get the opportunities they deserve for a holistic development. In my class, I try and integrate values, career awareness and day to day life skills into their curriculum so that they can articulate and celebrate their strengths and also embrace their areas of development positively.
