I imagine they're covered in extra fat to help protect them while they learn how to walk, and a little fuzz to maybe help them stay cool as they grow up, similar to baby elephants. I can also imagine parents may carry babies when they're really small before they can walk fully. I don't know I'm not putting a ton of thought into this other than they're very elephant coded. lol
