Visiting the funfair in Shevchenko Park, Chernivtsi. Ukraine. 7th September 2017.
Chernivtsi is built on many hills, so I expected to have quite some views when walking on top. The reality looks different: Everything is so closely built that you usually can only sneak a peek at the mountains while youâre in the middle of the street. On my quest to find a good view point to see the city and mountainside, one stop I made was on the ferris wheel in Shevchenko Park.

Part of my work in Chernivtsi was to accompany a member of the Jewish Community DĂŒsseldorf who was born in Chernivtsi in 1936 who visited his hometown for the first time after 71 years. We walked down the streets where he lived and played as a child before the ghetto. One of his comments about coming back to Chernivtsi â it had been his past, but now it has become his present again â was the biggest reward for our work.

Chernivtsi has a multicultural history: Jewish, Romanian and Austrian-Hungarian people have lived and shaped the face of the city, as have the Soviets and the Osman Empire. This Square used to be called Fish Square, then changed the name to Elisabeth Square during Austria-Hungary times, and during the Romanian occupation it was called Alexander Square. The figure in front of the theatre used to be one of the German poet Friedrich Schiller, now it depicts Olga Koblyanska, a Ukrainian writer and feminist from Chernivtsi.
The famous Vienna company Fellner & Helmer was commissioned with the design & building of the theatre. Because Chernivtsi took a long time to actually pay the company though, the architects sold their plans twice â and now there is the theatre in FĂŒrth, Germany, that looks just the same.
There are a lot of stray dogs in Chernivtsi, and a lot of them choose the Theatre Square to sleep in. The flower beds are more comfortable than the streets :)

As a huge fan of DĂŒsseldorf and their memorial site and a passionate historian, I was thrilled to read the new book by Hildegard Jakobs about the Königsallee, DĂŒsseldorfâs most famous street, during the NS. Connecting to my hometown and my interests when a strange city like Chernivtsi becomes a little overwhelming keeps me grounded. (Though I swear the DĂŒsseldorf t-shirt & the bag were a coincidence. I donât spend all my money on DĂŒsseldorf apparel.)

Every trip to foreign lands is an adventure and can be overwhelming. Itâs important to sit down from time to time and breathe, to just look at where you are without a screen nearby. A couple of mindful minutes a day ground you and make even the wildest adventures and hardest working days more manageable.

Iâm in Chernivtsi, Ukraine right now, a city with a rich multicultural history. It used to belong to Austria-Hungary as you can clearly see on the majority of the buildings, but was also annexed by the Romanians and then Germans. Figures estimate roughly a half of the population used to be Jewish before the Romanians and Germans together started deporting them to Transnistria. Now, very little of the Jewish population is left, but their tracks remain all over the city. After the second world war, Ukraine was annexed by the Soviet Union. Their influence clearly left their mark on the city as well.
