Having a Non-Stop Chocolate Craving?
Or to be less polite, are you a Chocolate Addict?
No, you’re not crazy and there’s nothing wrong with you. Chances are, your body is begging for magnesium.
Yep. Magnesium.
And maybe some serotonin (which can pretty much be increased with a little extra laughs and a little extra lovin’).
Don’t get me wrong, raw, dark chocolate or cacao is one of the most healing superfoods on the planet. I consider it medicine and it is a staple in my life.
What is a problem, is over consumption and being sure that you are listening to your body’s signals.
Here are some of my favourite magnesium-rich foods (aside from raw, dark chocolate) that you can include in your diet to help feed your body’s needs:
Seeds: Flax, Sesame, Pumpkin, Watermelon (seeds), Sunflower
Nuts: Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Pine Nuts
Vegetables: Spinach, Broccoli, Okra
Herbs: Chives, Basil, Dill
You can also look into supplementing with natural magnesium, though there are many different kinds of this mineral so I would recommend speaking with your Naturopath to choose the right one for you.

Can You feel It?
Last night I was fortunate enough to experience one certain space of magic. I arrived at Camps Bay beach at about 5.45, just in time for a group session of yoga on the sand. Splendid.
Synchronized down dogs and sunshine, on a backdrop of sparkling ocean we continued into a guided meditation setup by Paradigm shift South Africa.
Now there’s something to mull over; a paradigm shift?
Shift: /ʃɪft/ “a change in tendency - movement from one place to another ” Paradigm: /parədʌɪm/ - "model, pattern or world view”
A Shift in world view?
A world view is the basic picture we carry around with us of the way things are. A world view seeks to answer two fundamental and basic questions:
“Who are we?” & “What is the nature of the universe that we live in?”
The answers we give to these questions define and dictate the quality and characteristics of our personal relationships with people, nature and the world as a whole. When considered on a large scale, they define societies.
People have started to eat differently, think differently, read alternatively, change their attitudes toward things like having a boss, working in the corporate world, expanding their minds and spirituality. All these things sing change.
Last night, I was apart of that change. A collective meditation. I witnessed people bid there comfort zones adieu and dance as if no one and everyone was watching. Self expressing wildly at 150 beats per minutes, sober.
Last night I, became we. Beautifully. Organically.
There is something extraordinary happening in the world. Will you be the change you want to see?

Summer In NYC
Pace, people, pulse.
Maybe it was something about standing in the center of the gastronomical wonder, so fittingly named; Smogersburg - the Brooklyn based flea that aptly made me realize where I was about to explore.
New York was boldly introduced to me as a place that leaves nothing to be desired for, everything and anything feels as if it’s right there at the tips of your fingers. Undoubtedly it is.
But where to begin?
In a city so vast, it can be a pretty daunting thing deciding how to spend ones time. There inevitably will be an extensive list of “the must do” sight seeing and tourist attractions, which of course can be found in any chosen guide book and each hold their own remarkable tale.
However, there is a story to tell of some of the the lessor known treasures this vibrant city has tucked away.
One of my absolute favorites, and mammoth commitment was Shakespeare in the Park. An annual event that is held at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It has previously headlined the likes of Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, attendance is free, provided that guests wait in line for tickets on the day of the performance. Sounds easy enough, right?
Well... this constituted of a 5am wake up call, a 7 hour queuing session and a very grumpy neighbor that may or may have not been happy to be there- it really is hard to say. Whatever the circumstances, it was clear that this was to be an event of a lifetime, particualrly considering we would be joining the troops of more than 5 million New Yorkers who have lined-up in the past.
After far too many hours spent people watching I decided to wright down some of my reflections, as I listened to our grumpy neighbor kick up a fuss and simply observe the thousands of people so patiently waiting to receive their first-come-first-serve tickets.
Perception is such a peculiar thing, I pondered.
When you ask yourself; “but did you die?” The answer seems pretty standard.
Now ask yourself: “were you present enough to see the magic in every fleeting moment of now?” I suppose those lessons themselves can be beautiful.
What we choose to see and how simply we observe, will ultimately determine our experience. Choose to see a never-ending line, hours pass by and a waste of time and that is exactly what you will experience.
But, choose to be present and smell the wood of the oak trees, feel the pulse in a flute, see the joy in a space, hear the life in the wind, taste the tea on your lips and be thankful to experience each wonderful moment of now... and that’s exactly what you will experience. At least I think that’s what they mean when they say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It’s always there we just have to see it.
In all fairness, Central Park is unrivaled as far as long ques go.
I was happy to be there. And even happier to get tickets.
A triumphant wait for a wonderful production.

Thank you Cambodia
...For changing my life.
Ten hours in the scorching sun, over 30km’s on a bicycle that can barely be called a bicycle (but more like Cambodian flats for the brave) covered in mud and soaked with rain... the sweet recollection of feeling ALIVE; and I mean truly moved be each and every cell in my body, vibrating to an activating chaos comes to mind.
Surely, this will be my benchmark for decades to come.
I can humbly thank two little girls that may very well never know just how much of an impact they had on my life in that brief, but significant moment. Have you ever met someone with nothing, but everything? Ultimately paradoxical, yet their underlying simplicity, wonderful and at complete peace.
Happier and more content than most people in this world, but with far less in material value.
Just how much do we REALLY need?
Or is it knowing, that we actually have everything that is enough?
Thank you Cambodia.
What Would You Do if You Had Three Months to Live?
The time has come to write again, to live again.
After a toilsome three months, I have made the conscious decision to acknowledge that in fact we have all the power we have ever needed. The only question is; do you choose to seek from within and choose happiness?
After 8 months of glorious travel in Thailand & South East Asia, it was time for the most unfortunate reality to welcome me home. Straight to the hospital, I would witness my grandmother, mentor, role model and friend diagnosed with a stage four brain tumour; and realistically only three months to live.
Suddenly, nothing made sense and a life of wonder and peace turned into chaos and sadness. Travels put on hold, writing set aside and every moment devoted to an incredible woman that moulded my life.
The question comes to mind: what would you do if you had three months to live?
Now, as i sit here in a jazzy Capetonian café, the simple answer is: every single thing my heart has ever desired.
Live every day as if there is no tomorrow, because the absolute truth is that there very well may not be. Life in its brevity teaches us many lessons, if we are only open-minded enough to learn them.
Change struggle in to knowing that every part of the universe resides within each and every one of us; that if we choose to use and accept our true power, there are truly no limits.
I am not sure where this life will take me now, but I am not afraid to take the leaps toward being happy every single day, and neither should any one of you.
Happiness is the only option.
Thank you Gramsi for teaching me that.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others.

Whats Not To Love?
On my last trip to Bangkok, I was once again blown away by the amount of character this Asian super-city has to offer. When you are able to enjoy more than just a couple days and look passed all the hype that surrounds touristic places like Khaosan Road (which I have nothing against, besides the smell) it becomes clearer than daylight that Bankgok is one of the most vibrant cities in the world; undoubtedly you can feel the continuous pulse moving through your body as you walk its’ sleepless streets.
If you're strapped for time and still keen to explore this electrifying place, I've narrowed down a few places that should help optimise your stay; Of course there are also the temples, malls, museums etc. Here are some of the treasures I stumbled across.
For shopping:
Chatuchak weekend market
The final stop on the Skytrain’s northern line is Mo Chit station and where you can find Chatuchak Weekend market every Saturday and Sunday from 7am-6pm.
This is your one stop shop. You will possibly and probably find everything here as you would in the rest of Thailand (and then some!) for half the price. Be prepared to WALK and get there as early as possible; this market literally goes on for days.
For warm-up drinks:
Thonglor and Soi 11
Take the Thonglor stop, which just so happens to be conveniently located only 2 stops away from Nana (Sukhumvit Soi 11) and just keep walking, this road actually runs all the way to the Cambodian border. Take your pick, sit-back and relax while the likes of Bangkok’s Secrew entertain you. These B-boy mega-talents, will be happy to keep your jaw just above the ground and can be found entertaining crowds near Stash and Cheap Charlies Bar, just follow the applause you won’t be disappointed.
For a night out on the town:
Rooftop bars
This is a TOTAL must, and there are so many to choose from! A personal favourite of mine has to be Octave Bar; get there from 5pm-7pm for buy-one-get-one-free sunset cocktails. Click here, for a detailed rooftop hop list. Warning; these high views may come with high prices.
For cool-down drinks:
Skate Café
Great vibes, and good people! This place stays open till the wee hours of the morning and it's best to wind down after an epic night, to a game of pool. Otherwise, start the warm-up and dinner here; they have great food too! Everything in this place screams character; from the mini-ramp, to the kids skating it and the hand-made furniture.
It was there that I witnessed a 60-something year old woman get on a board. Magic.
The Travel Balance
When you are discovering a foreign country; enchanted by the spirit of adventure it becomes far too easy to get carried away in the "tasting" department. Everything is new and exciting, without a doubt your tastebuds are on an adventure of their own.
The problem inevitably arises; "uh oh, my favourite shorts are starting to look like the buttons are afraid of each other." Yes, every lady who has ever experienced the whirlwind diet of a bohemian wanderer, will tell you about the dreaded (insert DUM DUM DUM) "travel weight"
The idea is young, wild and free not young, wild and unhealthy. Although I may have learned this the hard way; for which I blame the sticky rice and padthai, I think I may have finally managed to figure out a way to balance this gypsy life-style.
Here are my thoughts on how to avoid the excess baggage:
Get a grip.On a skipping rope, I mean. These wonderful things fit just about everywhere and it's easy to get a few inconspicuous jumps in every morning. Bye-bye calories!
Travel with a flask. Of course I'm a tad bias to be this way inclined, considering I drink close to ten cups of tea a day, but this is a really great way to stay hydrated and avoid unhealthy snacking. In fact, most of the time we think we are hungry, our bodies are just dying of thirst. Hot water also helps with digestion, and most places will full up your flask for free. I like to keep ginger or cinnamon in mine, which can be used more then once and also have additional health benefits.
Seedy does it. Hailed with burning body fat, being high in omega-3s and charged with fibre, flax seeds can really fire up your metabolism. These babies are a great for detoxifying the body from a wine-induced hangover. I like to keep them on hand at breakfast and sprinkle a smidgen on some fresh fruit & yogurt.
Thirty minutes; BOOM! Some mornings are more motivating then others, and it's those mornings you really want to take advantage of. Fortunately, Shape have come up with 5 Ways to Burn 500 Calories in 30 Minutes. Bookmark this bad-boy, and never feel guilty about those tasting expeditions again.

Where to today, Mr Moon?
As I look out at the view in front of me, the last three days feel somewhat surreal. I suddenly realise how blessed I am, and even more so how possible it is to live the life you love everyday.
I am literally watching the sunset and gazing at picturesque islands as far as the eye can see. Anything is possible, and this is only the beginning of a very exciting journey of good vibrations and exploration.
Blue Moon Adventure Quest aka operation "BMAQ" Pick up our fellow Saffas at BKK International Airport; check. Board the plane at 6am; to make it just in time for the Jungle Experience Koh Phangan; check. Have the most amazing night; making new friends and dancing till the break of dawn; check!
Nice to make up for the lack of dancing I've done in the past 6 months; tunes of deep house and sinister base sounds filled the the jungle of this island paradise. There's nothing better then everyone pulsing as one and thoroughly enjoying some groovy sounds. The Jungle Experience happens the night before and ten days after the full moon, it is a dance festival for the more perceptive party goer. If you like good music, chilled out vibes and less masses of commercial ravers then this is the one you won't want to miss. Totally worth the mission.
The next day of course was the world renowned full moon party. Being here we couldn't help but wonder about all the hype that surrounds these things. In all honesty, I can't say I was looking forward to this one; expecting hoards of drunk jocks and half naked youngsters covered in orange paint.
I loved it. Drum and base, reggae, techno, house and undoubtedly that commercial stuff that hurts your ears all spread along a beautiful beach for you to take your pick. I concur, this party is world renowned because it's that good.
Todays beautiful lesson (which I was taught on a beach by a tattooed full-mooner from London)
“love the life you live. live the life you love.”

Spring Clean!
It all started in a second-hand book store; I picked up the book Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra, the place was entirely muddled and this was the book that (as I like to think) "spoke to me."
I was fortunate enough to stumble across this knowledge that would surely change my entire perception of health, eating and lifestyle choices. As any yogi will tell you; Ayurveda is the basis of a balanced lifestyle.
"Ayurveda or "life knowledge" in Sanskrit is a system of alternative medicine that has been practiced in India for centuries. According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. Health is defined as the body being clear of toxins, the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally. "
That's when it hit me; we spring clean our apartments, why don't we spring clean ourselves? Most of us would probably end up on one of those hoarding shows, considering the clutter we keep in our bodies for so long. A good spring clean always makes me feel a thousand times better, can you imagine what it would do for my health if I were to 'spring clean' my body as well?
In a busy, stressful and toxic world, our physical and mental systems accumulate toxins causing deterioration in bodily functioning. Ayurveda recommends a seasonal cleanse otherwise know as Panchakarma, a simple detoxifying process. However, its effects are powerful and effective.
"Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being."- The Ayurvedic Institute
I am pleased to tell you, that I have completed my 7 day spring clean of self. I feel lighter, clearer and have even managed to drop a couple kilograms. I totally recommend exploring your Ayurvedic constitution, and if you have any means of getting hold of Perfect Health; it is a great introduction to Ayurveda.
I was not a cleansing Nazi but instead did what felt good and that was easy enough:
1. No alcohol, caffein, meat or sugar (including fruit and nuts) for 7 days.
2. Tongue scraping; Clean the tongue by gently scraping it with a tongue scraper slowly from back to front five to ten times every morning.
3. Drink digestive tea. I chose ginger and turmeric, which I made myself ever morning.
4. Sinus cleanse of himalayan salt and sterilised water.
5. Oil massage. I was unable to get hold of sesame oil, and used coconut oil which was lovely. Before you bathe massage a thin coating of warmed or room temperature organic oil over your entire body, using long strokes on your limbs and circular strokes on your joints. Follow this with a hot shower and a cool rinse.
6. Yoga practice, even if it's for 30 minutes before you have to leave for work. The deep breathing is really important here.
7. Oats, almond milk and cinnamon for breakfast.
8. Plenty of leafy greens, steamed or lightly stir-fried.
9. Mung beans, used to cleanse the body since it is so nourishing, easy to digest and anti-inflammatory. Hemsley & Hemsley are on it with a great recipe in Vogue Beauty.
The basic idea is simple, clean and nourishing eating. Calming the mind and giving the self a little bit of love and attention. For a more detailed idea of this 7 day cleanse please click here.
