Why we are the most well connected but lonely generation yet.
Facebook/Snapchat/Insta/Twitter you probs have all of these and we are all connect via these platforms to be more sociable, right? But these platforms also show us what we could have and this is where everything messes up...
It’s like everyone’s so scared of missing out on something, that they won’t commit to anything. And I’m not just talking seriously committing to that boy/girl on a couples flat and puppy vibe. I mean we won’t even commit to grabbing a coffee with that 5/10 newbie with bae potential you met a party, JUST IN CASE you miss an invite from the exceptionally cute guy you met in 2009 and have a ‘snapchat’ thing with. And what if this is the day he FINALLY asks you to go on your dream date but you’re already sitting drinking a luke warm latte on a luke warm date? What if Biebs swings by your house to serenade you and you’re not there? What if...
Think about this, with so much technology and platforms at our fingertips, we can see what each other are doing 58475 hours a day... we can also cancel plans in a milisec. What’s more cray though, is that we can ignore each other too. Even though we all know our phones live in our hands, we can just mark messages unread or blatantly ignore them. This isn’t even seen as impolite, it’s just our way. I do it all the time! Especially when I can’t even figure out what to answer, I just won’t. Which got me thinking, how much have I missed out on, through fear of missing out on something better? Could people I have literally brushed off be my soul mate that I’ve simply disregarded, scared to commit any of my time or be disappointed. I mean, I’ve probably invested more time on new Instagram posts, than getting to know someone knew.
All these ways of connecting with each other should facilitate us to be more social/outgoing and friendly. All our calendars should be stuffed to the BRIM. But, I actually feel these things act as a barrier. Back in the day, if our parents wanted to hang out with someone, they went to their houses knocked on the door and asked them then and there, if they wanted to hang out. The other person said yes/no and our parents went on with their lives accordingly, maybe with or without a new bae. Maybe they called back 3 times and bae ‘wasn’t in’ so they grasped it wasn’t going to happen. Simple.
But now, brains all be like: shall I text, or is a facebook message more casual? Shall I could call? No one calls anymore though, it might scare him off... and ahh they look pretty busy on their snapchat story today so.. Oh they instagrammed that they’re already grabbing lunch with XYZ today, Who she?Maybs his sister or something I dunno. But then hey he did just tweet saying ‘Sooo bored,’ so now I don’t know wtf to think. Ah fuck, I’ll leave it.
I mean, if my life was actually half as delightful as my social media makes out I genuinely wouldn’t even have time to post this bloody post? I think it’s time to take some risks and go out or some shit.
Also,
DON’T LISTEN TO THE RULES, THEY ARE SHIT, DON’T WAIT HALF AN HOUR TO TEXT BACK COS EVERYONE’S THINKING THE SAME. YOU DO YOU, TEXT HIM BACK AND GO HAVE FUN.
Don’t triple-text though, that’s just thirsty af.
