Hello there! This is the current official tumblr blog for The Undergrowth, a game I an developing on my own. Stick around to see how progress goes! **(Main blog: bobapplesimblr)**
Just some quick information before we start: this blog is better viewed in website mode. The little blue square in the corner opens up more links!
If you are here on mobile, here's what you need to move around here:
- Devlogs tag;
- Patreon Link;
- [TBC]
So sorry for the lack of updates, I'm having a hard time fleshing out the story for the game 😥 but my current to-do list for the game development looks like this, more or less:
- make a better tilemap set
- map out the different areas
- design low level enemies
And then personally these are some things I really wanna do for my own enjoyment:
- design the npcs
- design the icons
- design lots of the UI stuff to make it look aesthetic
But I'll try to get the first list done first 👍 and give yall an update once I have something complete
Did I procrastinate making the controls yesterday and only finished them a bit ago after 1am? Yes. Am I happy with my progress anyway? Yes!
I've been having a lot of fun messing with Godot, even if I am following multiple tutorials and have 3-4 different youtube tabs open at one time AND the official Godot Documentation open too, lmao
Onto the content!
First, of course, I worked on the controls and got them functioning, and although I copied along with a tutorial, the sir explaining everything did a fantastic job and I learned a lot following along to his in depth explanation. (let me know if you want me to link the tutorials I used in the comments)
And alongside working on that, I made this:
I messed around with my tilesets, and I will continue to do so, as I am not too happy with the stone floor. My close friends and main feedback force have given me some really good suggestions on how to make it a bit easier on the eyes, and tomorrow (if I have time) I will experiment with their suggestions to see what I can make that I will also enjoy.
I'm once again extremely early in the development/coding process, specially since I decided to switch to a different game engine, but I am learning a lot and I am having fun learning, which is very important! Having fun doing something is one of the main ways to guarantee you will keep doing it, and I refuse to abandon this project!
Unfortunately I don't have any other images or videos to share at the time, but I do have one question for you:
What do you preffer in a game?
Combat.
Puzzles.

Thank you so much if you vote on this poll and have a great day!! 😊
Hello friends! :D I've been doing a lot of sprite work and visual work behind the scenes, and I thought it was about time to share it with you all.
Before I go ahead and share the images, please keep in mind a lot can still change, and it's possible that a year or so down the line the game visuals will get a rework as my pixel art skills grow.
SO!
The first thing I really worked on was an image for the start menu, something to have behind the options, and I ended up with this:
Now, if you read my previous post you'd know I'll be changing Game Engines soon, so although I did have the main menu set up and mostly functioning this way in GDevelop, I'll likely have to rework it for Godot.
However! This became the base for *most* of my colors moving forward, though they are actively getting changed and swapped out deppending on how they work in certain contexts and applications.
-----
After that I decided to try my hand at making a quick and dirty map layout for the main area, and that's when I started losing the plot a little bit...
I started trying to rework the story I had, cause honestly, I didn't really HAVE much of a story. However, I didn't like any of the ideas I came up with, not entirely, and it lead to an entire day of frustration.
I ended up with a map like this, with grand ideas of having horror elements, many more fighting areas inside certain buildings, etc. But I likely will not use it anymore.
That being said, this is still my art, so please don't take it and use it without permission just because I won't be using it myself.
-----
After all this I took a break from reworking the story. I took a break from the project entirely, writing down a few notes here and there of little scenes I wanted, little dialogue details or mechanics that came to mind. It was nice to take this break, and I think it was very needed, but I cannot be kept from a passion project for too long.
Today I decided to change game engines for 1 main reason: Tilemaps (and procedural generation)
GDevelop, as far as I know, does not have the tilemap tools I wanted to use for this project, but Godot does, and in preperation to transfer over my project I decided to try working on some quick, and possibly temporary, tilemaps. And it was so fun!!!
I had so much fun booting up Aseprite and working on this. I'll have to import them into Tiled and later into Godot, but I am having so much fun working on these, even if the color palette isn't what I expected at first. Still, I'm very excited to make more and begin building environments with this.

And that's about it for now! At least all I can remember off the top of my head right now.
If you haven't heard yet, I have a new Patreon so I can try and stay funded during this process! I trust that I won't be in trouble without funding, but all and any support is appreciated, always!
Thank you so much for reading, and have a wonderful day!!!
Yeah, so, I've come to the realization that GDevelop, although great for beginners like myself, might be a bit too limited for what I'd like to do? There are some features out there that unfortunately don't seem to be in GDevelop, therefore I think I'll be changing to Godot instead.
Godot is also free and open source, and I might be able to find more tutorials for it than for GDevelop, but that also means I'll have to learn a new programming language from scratch (the only other programming language I ever learned was a very brief HTML course in college and I retained very little from it).
That being said, I might stream my learning process some time in the future, specifically on Youtube, but whenever that time comes I will 100% put a link to the channel here and on my Patreon for free where I also share a bit of this process!
All in all, I just want to have a bit more freedom with what I can do for this game, and I'm hoping Godot will give me that, without making me want to rip my hair out, but I guess we'll see how everything goes.
I was away from my laptop for so long (battery inflated), but I'm finally back with it!!! I did not get any kind of giant amount of progress done, but I did make a small video to showcase the little animation I made for a weapon swing! :D I'm honestly really happy with it, and I got some feedback from a friend that helped me make it a little better while I was animating it.
So far I only have a down walk and a down swing for Yuna, but I'll have the rest of the orientations done quick! Not today, at the time of me writing this, but probably tomorrow! And if not tomorrow, then the day after!!
Besides that I kinda just, reworked a tiny bit of the scripting? (I feel that using the work scripting instead of coding is more fitting as what I am using for this is a visual scripting engine) And I am having a lot of fun with it.
Next up on my to do list, besides finishing up the player animations, will be to try my hand at making a start screen and menu system, and most likely some level design after that. It's been a little hard for me to plan out what honestly should be higher priority, but I will definitely take the time to sit down and organize that, for my own sanity lmao. But I also have to learn a lot more of the basics, but I will do that as I go!
Alrighty then, onto the clip!
[3 seperate swings, fade in and fade out done in editing software.]
Meet Yuna <3 (left). The sprite in the middle is the previous player model, used so I could learn how to incorporate the controls and the animations I would need, and the sprite on the right is a temporary design for the future enemies so I can get the enemy pathing and logic down.
I will likely have to do a lot more sprite work before I get too deep into coding the features (using the word 'coding' feels weird cause I'm using a codeless engine..), but I'm excited to work on it! Slow and steady wins the race, but this isn't a race so I am free to take my time with it! (I'm going to have to force myself to work slow and detailed instead of halfassing it to have it done faster)
I really like where I ended up with Yuna's design, at least for now. And yes, their name is a refference to Y/N, I thought that'd be fun, hehe
I'm definitely going to have some dificulty with the backgrounds and set design for this game, I am ready to face that, but it still worries me a little bit lmao. The color palette is what's been giving me the most grief, but I'll get there eventually!! Just gotta keep at it until I get somewhere!!
Thank you for reading, and see you in the next devlog! :D
End of Day Thoughts: Jesus Fucking Christ I might be jumping into this head first, I gotta take it SO MUCH SLOWER.
So hey, I've decided to make a game. I've wanted to make a game for a long time, but I never had a proper idea I liked - until today!!
The game's current name is The Undergrowth, and it is a dungeon crawler (I might be using the term wrong here) based on exploring and collecting loot from an abandoned, ruined, and reclaimed by nature urban environment. Think broken box tvs being used as flower beds! For some reason this type of game came to me, and something about it made it endearing to me, and it was the perfect place to use two characters of mine that I created with no particular goal in mind: Brutus and Daredevil.
Mutuals that have known me for a long time might've seen a post or two with these characters in sim form, and yes, these are the same characters from those posts, but a bit reworked.
I decided to work on brainstorming this project in a way that is comfortable and usual for me: Opening a blank canvas and writing away, making little doodles and sketches on the sides to illustrate my ideas along the way. Pictures of what I wrote today will be under the cut! Please be respectful and don't steal!!!
I also gathered up many tutorials on the game making process, particularly involving the GDevelop software, which for now is what I will be using to make this game. However, I am a fairly unorganized person and my attention span for technical things is not the best (I may have adhd but I have not been diagnosed yet, so yeah), so I will have to return to those another day. I also am someone who is um, let's say, very rushed in the creation process and I try to go for the finish line before even starting the race, but I will force myself not to do it here!!! I will stay in the concepting stage for as long as needed, and I will remind myself that this project will take a very long time, but I can do it and there is no better time to start than now!!!
The information on the images bellow IS STILL SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!!! Thank you
