Twenty years ago, Vincent Valentine was a 27 year-old Castle Guard in Radiant Garden. He was pretty happy, too; he was in a relationship with one of Ansem’s scientists, a beautiful woman named Lucrecia Crescent, and generally life was actually fairly decent for him.

Of course, because this is Vincent Valentine, he’s not allowed to be happy for long.

Another scientist, a man named Hojo, had been doing some rather...unethical experiments in secret. Lucrecia discovered this and told Vincent, and the pair of them prepared to take it to King Ansem. One night, when Lucrecia was in the lab very late searching for evidence to prove Hojo’s misdeeds -- with Vincent with her as a guard -- Hojo caught them.

While the details aren’t known to the public, Lucrecia and Vincent disappeared, and Hojo was fired in disgrace when the details of what he’d done came to light. It was a rather massive scandal, but it faded from memory over time, Hojo becoming the creepy recluse in the house far away from town.

Twenty-some years later, Vincent reappeared in Radiant Garden a much changed man. He refuses to tell anyone what happened to him or where he’s been, or where Lucrecia is -- he doesn’t honestly talk to anyone at all, really. He mostly kind of lurks around and fends off the Heartless if needed. He does help with the town’s restoration occasionally, but doesn’t stick around for any small talk. If one were to look close, though, they’d notice the Darkness that emanates from him constantly.

What Hojo did to Vincent is, honestly, horrific. He used Vincent in experiments to test whether or not a man could be swallowed by the Darkness and remain physically intact. Vincent’s blocked...some of that out? Enough that he doesn’t remember the worst of what was done, though he still knows what happened to him.

The results were...successful, by a certain definition of the word. 

Hojo ripped Vincent’s heart from his chest, and once he was both Heartless and Nobody -- his will strong enough to keep his shell’s human form -- Hojo artificially fused the two back together. Vincent is not Nobody and not Heartless, but not human. He is physically human, yes, but his left arm and the left side of his chest spreading over where his heart is are black and resemble nothing more than a Heartless (he hides these). And while he is mostly stable at this point, he is capable of transforming into a Heartless-like beast at will. He retains some of his mind, and will not harm his friends or allies, but it is also much more animalistic. He has no name for it, and simply calls it the Beast. It took a lot of work to make the transformation controllable. 

He spent ten years in hiding, traveling the worlds and trying to learn how to control his unstable Darkness and trying to free himself from the guilt of being unable to save Lucrecia -- Hojo did the same thing to her, and while Vincent survived...she was not so lucky.

“...That I am,” he says, trying (and succeeding, for the Valentine poker face is legendary) to hide his surprise at how...small, the young lady was. He wasn’t so fool as to assume her a child, as she was certainly not human, but...how do you politely ask someone what in the world they are, anyway?

She shrugs, only tilting her head to the side in acknowledgement. Odd how being held by a complete stranger doesn’t seem to really both her anymore. “True but they’re not nearly as fun… When people don’t get it the way of course.” Was her smart ass reply.

“You assume that people know they’re in the way,” he replies, still amused. He stands, placing the girl back on her feet and brushing himself off. “I suppose you’re alright, then.” She didn’t seem like the type needing to be worried about, really.

As if on cue the redhead ends up jumping from a nearby building, not realizing there was someone underneath her. By the time such information registered the two were very close to colliding. “Well shit… Sorry!”

Considering how many times he’s been landed on by a certain Wutaian ninja, his reflexes manage to at least move him so he catches her, even though he still lands on his ass. He’s only mildly bemused by this, and he raises his eyebrows at her. “There are less dangerous ways to descend a building,” he says dryly.

Fern: Does your character have any magical abilities?

Magical? No. All his ‘magical’ abilities come from materia.

But he can transform into Galian, and he’s pretty much functionally immortal, and he heals faster than normal and has better senses, night vision, and reflexes than normal, and he’s stronger than normal, too.

But that’s all science-y, not magic.

Moonflower: What’s one dream your character has had?

Sadly enough, ever since he was little he’d dreamed of having a fairy-tale romance -- it’s cheesy and he’s embarrassed by it, but it’s true. He wanted to fall in love with a beautiful, kind woman, and have a family, et cetera et cetera.

Clearly, that didn’t pan out, and he’s pretty much “ahaha not going to happen” these days.

Sage: What is one thing they have learnt?

Probably one of the most important things he’s learned he learned only recently -- you can’t live in the past. You can’t spend your time regretting things you did or didn’t do; especially when you have a long, long life ahead of you.

It took a hell of a lot to teach him that, and he’s bad at remembering it, but it’s a lesson he has learned, finally.

Rosemary

Rosemary: What is something your character will always remember?

There are a lot of memories that stick in his head even after so many years and so much trauma.

His father teaching him to shoot, steady hands on his small ones wrapped around the cold steel barrel of a gun -- the chill of the north nipping his cheeks and the smell of gunpowder, cologne, and leather (his father) surrounding him.

The day he was told his father died, all the things he never got to say, all those years of anger and fighting and everything about the man who raised him narrowed down to the red bandanna in his hands and an empty coffin.

The last time he saw the other Turks; Veld, Noah, Ainsley, Vegas, Salim, Renshu, Duncan, their faces burned in his memory as they disappeared into the distance.

The first time he saw Lucrecia -- her face when he introduced herself, her self-conscious laugh and smile, everything about her in that moment, and the afternoon he spent with her under that tree. Every moment he spent with her, really.

And being shot. It’s burned into his memory, that exact second.

He tries not to think about stuff too much when he’s idle because therein lies the way to bad thoughts. Bad, bad thoughts. He’s gotten pretty good at not thinking -- meditation is very useful.
