I came across this photo this morning and held my breath as my eyes filled with tears. This is a scale model of the Manzanar War Relocation Center that is displayed at Manzanar National Historic Site. I really can’t help but draw the immediate visual comparisons from World War II era incarceration of Japanese Americans to the tent camps, next to a Customs and Border Protection station in Tornillo, Texas. . Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten internment camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were incarcerated from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Today 2,342 children have been separated from their parents and as of today @realdonaldtrump has no plans to reunite. Children should never have been separated from their parents in the first place. I can’t imagine the trauma these kids are going through and will continue to live with for the rest of their lives. Keep making your calls. #theunsungheroines #keepfamiliestogether

In 1983 Roberta Bondar's particular interest in the nervous system and the inner ear balancing system, especially as it related to the functioning of the eye, had immediate relevance to experiments being planned for the first Canadian space flight. She also conducted research into blood flow in the brain during microgravity, lower body negative pressure and various pathological states. Bondar flew on the space shuttle Discovery during Mission STS-42, 22-30 January 1992, and during her 8-day space mission conducted experiments in the Spacelab and on the middeck to discover means to allow future astronauts to undertake longer flights in space. After her astronaut career, Bondar led an international team of researchers at NASA for more than a decade, examining data obtained from astronauts on space missions to better understand the mechanisms underlying the body's ability to recover from exposure to space. #theunsungheroines

It is a component of every religion and every civilization.""⠀ ⠀ Shirin Ebadi, J.D., was awarded the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote human rights, in particular, the rights of women, children, and political prisoners in Iran. She is the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and only the fifth Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in any field.⠀ ⠀ Dr. Ebadi was one of the first female judges in Iran. She served as president of the city court of Tehran from 1975 to 1979 and was the first Iranian woman to achieve Chief Justice status. She, along with other women judges, was dismissed from that position after the Islamic Revolution in February 1979. She was made a clerk in the court she had once presided over, until she petitioned for early retirement. After obtaining her lawyer’s license in 1992, Dr. Ebadi set up private practice. As a lawyer, Dr. Ebadi has taken on many controversial cases defending political dissidents and as a result has been arrested numerous times.⠀ ⠀ In addition to being an internationally-recognized advocate of human rights, she has also established many non-governmental organizations in Iran, including the Million Signatures Campaign, a campaign demanding an end to legal discrimination against women in Iranian law. Dr. Ebadi is also a university professor and often students from outside Iran take part in her human rights training courses. She has published over 70 articles and 13 books dedicated to various aspects of human rights, some of which have been published by UNICEF. In 2004, she was named by Forbes Magazine as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.⠀ ⠀ In January 2006, along with sister Laureate Jody Williams, Dr. Ebadi took the lead in establishing the Nobel Women’s Initiative. #theunsungheroines
"Only together can we move forward, so that there is light and hope for all women on the planet."⠀ ⠀ Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a Mayan k’iche’ activist born in 1959 in Chimel, a small Mayan community in the highlands of Guatemala. As a young girl, Rigoberta traveled alongside her father, Vincente Menchú, from community to community teaching rural campesinos their rights and encouraging them to organize. In 1960, ethnic and socioeconomic tensions engrained since colonization spurred a brutal civil war against the Mayan people. The military dictatorship, under the leadership of Efraín Ríos Montt, and rich landowners initiated the bloodshed. By the time a peace agreement was signed in 1996, 450 Mayan villages were destroyed, over 200,000 Guatemalans murdered and 1 million were displaced. Rigoberta and her family mobilized Guatemalans during the war to denounce government-led mass atrocities. Their activism came at a great cost. At a peaceful protest held at the Spanish Embassy in Guatemala City in 1980, Rigoberta’s father and thirty-seven other campesino activists were murdered in a fire. Not long after, the Guatemalan army tortured and murdered Rigoberta’s brother and mother. At age 21, Rigoberta fled into exile. Rigoberta spoke publicly about the plight of the Mayan people in Guatemala while in exile. In 1983 she published I, Rigoberta Menchú and catapulted the civil war into global headlines. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples. After receiving the prize Rigoberta returned to Guatemala and established the Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation (FRMT) to support Mayan communities and survivors of the genocide as they seek justice. Rigoberta and the Foundation have been key in advocating for justice in several high profile cases in Guatemala, including the trial against former dictator Efrain Ríos Montt in May 2013, the Spanish Embassy massacre in January 2015, and the case of 14 survivors of sexual violence in Sepur Zarco in February 2016. She continues to seek justice for all Mayan people impacted by the genocide. #theunsungheroines

Unwisely directed, it can be a dreadful, destructive force." ⠀ ⠀ The daughter of former slaves, Mary Jane McLeod Bethune became one of the most important black educators, civil and women’s rights leaders and government officials of the twentieth century. The college she founded set educational standards for today’s black colleges, and her role as an advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave African Americans an advocate in government. Bethune benefited from efforts to educate African Americans after the war, graduating in 1894 from the Scotia Seminary, a boarding school in North Carolina. A champion of racial and gender equality, Bethune founded many organizations and led voter registration drives after women gained the vote in 1920, risking racist attacks. In 1924, she was elected president of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, and in 1935, she became the founding president of the National Council of Negro Women. Bethune also played a role in the transition of black voters from the Republican Party—“the party of Lincoln”—to the Democratic Party during the Great Depression. A friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1936, Bethune became the highest ranking African American woman in government when President Roosevelt named her director of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration. She was also a leader of FDR’s unofficial “black cabinet.” In 1937 Bethune organized a conference on the Problems of the Negro and Negro Youth, and fought to end discrimination and lynching. In 1940, she became vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Persons (NAACP), a position she held for the rest of her life. As a member of the advisory board that in 1942 created the Women’s Army Corps, Bethune ensured it was racially integrated. Appointed by President Harry S. Truman, Bethune was the only woman of color at the founding conference of the United Nations in 1945. "Tall, androgynous and armed — she held a state gun permit — Ms. DeLarverie roamed lower Seventh and Eighth Avenues and points between into her 80s, patrolling the sidewalks and checking in at lesbian bars. She was on the lookout for what she called “ugliness”: any form of intolerance, bullying or abuse of her “baby girls.” Ms. DeLarverie had grown up in the South, of mixed race, and spent part of the first half of her life singing and performing as a man. Identity, for her, had been especially complicated, and she did not want others persecuted for theirs. “I can spot ugly in a minute,” she said in a 2009 interview for Columbia University’s NYC in Focus journalism project. “No people even pull it around me that know me. They’ll just walk away, and that’s a good thing to do because I’ll either pick up the phone or I’ll nail you.”⠀ Storme DeLarverie (her first name sounds like stormy; her last name is pronounced de-LAR-ver-ee) was born in 1920 in New Orleans. She celebrated her birthday on Dec. 24, though she told people that she was not certain that that was the actual day because of the circumstances of her birth. Her mother, who was black, was a servant in the house of her father, who was white. At some point her father married her mother, and the family moved to California.....Ms. DeLarverie had earlier lived at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan for decades. She made her living working security at the Cubby Hole and later for Ms. Cannistraci at Henrietta Hudson. But she regarded the whole neighborhood as within her jurisdiction. “She literally walked the streets of downtown Manhattan like a gay superhero,” Ms. Cannistraci said. “She was not to be messed with by any stretch of the imagination.” VIA @nytimes #theunsugheroines

Excerpt from @nytimes from 1994: The White House (Bill Clinton) today surrendered to Republican pressure by forcing the resignation of Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, whose outspoken views about drugs and sexuality had made her the target of a conservative campaign to oust her from office.She has also spoken in favor of studying the legalization of drugs and the distribution of contraceptives in public schools and has criticized the Catholic Church for its opposition to abortion, drawing intense fire from conservatives on Capitol Hill and elsewhere. Some moderate Democrats had also urged Mr. Clinton to dismiss the Surgeon General, adding their voices to conservative members of Congress who were mounting an active public campaign to force her from office. Dr. Elders described herself as "a very strong advocate" of teaching sex education in schools "at a very early age." Elders also strongly advocated sex and reproductive education, especially in African American communities. She criticized older textbooks that said only white females had naturally regular periods. Elders drew fire, as well as censure from the Clinton administration, when she suggested that legalizing drugs might help reduce crime and that the idea should at least be studied. The President's decision to force Dr. Elders from office was immediately applauded by Republican lawmakers, conservatives outside Congress and leaders of anti-abortion organizations. Representative Newt Gingrich, the Georgia Republican who will be the next Speaker of the House, said: "It's good for the country and good for the President that she's departed." Dr. Elders's dismissal met with bitter criticism from gay rights organizations, some abortion rights groups, and liberal organizations like People for the American Way. Planned Parenthood of New York City accused Mr. Clinton of succumbing to pressure from the right. "Mr. Clinton will be making a serious political mistake if he continues to try to out-Newt Mr. Gingrich," the group said in a written statement......"
