Good Luck Finding Me Alive
It has been roughly a week since I have returned to my hometown, and I have made some unsettling discoveries. There is much to the Frog-in-the-Boiling-Pot theory, for if I was not exposed to the reality outside of our city, if I had stayed here instead, I would not even notice the changes that have occurred.
Surreal things have been happening here. It started, I believe, while I was away, and have continued during my stay. While the place is undoubtably likened to Davao City, there are places here that should not be here. People I have known my whole life are not as they were before. Time is completely distorted. I have a theory, and I believe it to be a quite likely theory; Davao City no longer exists.
Wait, don't go, hear me out! I know it seems unlikely; I didn't want to believe it at first either, really, I didn't. But after observing these...changes...I can't deny it anymore.
Alien life forms have taken over my hometown.
In hindsight, I should have seen this sooner. It started a few years ago, and it seems that every year passing brings another bout of transitions. This city - not Davao, will never again be Davao - has had places opening that I've never heard of before, and places that have closed when they were around a few months ago. Abreeza Mall has opened an S&R and a J.Co when only last October, S&R was in Matina, and J.Co was still rearing to open in SM Ecoland - places nowhere near Abreeza Mall.
My parents - oh, god, my parents - it seems like them, at first I thought, I had hoped that they'd be fine, even when my dad grew a beard, but...that was only the first sign. I saw them at the airport. We had talked a few times before, I didn't notice anything strange then. But when I saw my dad with a beard, and my mom with her hair in a ponytail, it seemed so surreal. A few days later, Dad whips out his iPhone and tells me he had a it decked out in a new screen protector and case. My dad has never been one for decking a phone out in anything! Then I learn that he plays music from Spotify on his speakers via Bluetooth. And my mom, I thought she'd find this just as strange. But she - she - told Dad to play...
Because she likes Arianna Grande.
Do you see now? These are not my parents. They are aliens who have taken over my parents. The strange and inconsistent flow of time has impeded my productivity and my ability to deduce this sooner. My only consolation is that they played 'On Top of the World' by Imagine Dragons and 'I See Fire' from 'The Hobbit' soundtrack. They may be aliens, but at least they have good taste in music.
I'll have to wrap this up. My 'mom', or the alien pretending to be her, tells me that dinner will be ready soon. I do not know whether she plans to eat with me or simply to eat me. But I thought that I should warn you. People have to know.
A virus has spread. It will target anyone and everyone regardless of age, gender, social standing, race, religion. It will not discriminate, and it can not be cured. It is called 'Change', and manifests in people when they 'Grow Up'. At what point one starts to 'grow up' or be considered 'grown up', I do not know, but it will hit you. I have already been affected. If I am not the same as I was when we last saw each other, follow these instructions: force me into warm jammies and good socks, shove some Yakult down my throat, and chain me down for an animated movie. This, I believe, will staunch the effects, though it can not completely stop the virus.
I believe in you. Defeat this virus. May the odds be ever in your favor.
