6. How to prevent cybercrime

There are multiple ways to prevent from being apart of cybercrime and to keep yourself safe. It’s extremely important to take measures into your own hands when protecting yourself from social media, online identity, and any other data.  First off when creating social media accounts, web mail, bank passwords, other online passwords make sure they are all different. Creating unique encrypted passwords for every account will prevent the hacker from accessing all of the accounts. Imagine creating the same password for each account? Everything will be hacked. Secondly, based on browsers such as Google Chrome or Firefox make sure the latest updates are consistently installed, and the operating system is updated in an efficient timely manner.  Phishing has been an ongoing issue for several years, in order to prevent that look thoroughly where the email came from, look upon the site prior to clicking anything. When random sites have a large promotion, don’t believe it until you review the site and the overall content. This will prevent from taking your personal information and using it against yourself. In any circumstances, if identity were to be compromised, immediately contact the financial institutions, and call the credit bureau. Malware is very infectious, once its inserted in your computer it can remotely take over, access personal information and track any information. In order to prevent that, install an anti-virus/malware software, have them up to date, secure the network, and continue to have an operating system. 

These crimes are intended to obtain other information such as logins, passwords, credit card information to open a line of credit, obtain a mortgage, open a new credit account, infect your computer with a virus to take over your computer and accessing your personal information.

5. How Social Media benefits Education

This day an age, students are grown up with technology, let alone social media. It provides opportunities for students to access their educational studies through the online platform. Over the years, the way to teach students has changed, technology has been more involved.  For example, social media has helped out students with a platform called “Blackboard”. It gives students the ability to access their online work in a relevant way. It enhances the process of learning, through the various platforms it has to offer. Students would feel more comfortable being able to learn through technology based on the way the teachers would educate them. Also, for example now school boards have twitter and facebook. Principles and administrators post any sort of updates that are related to school events and closures. This ensures where students can continue to follow these pages, and keep intact with the recent events. This builds a strong community within the social media world. Students should take advantage of that because back in the day it wasn’t the same use of the method that is being used now. Its a great communication channel for students to take advantage of, and they should not be taken for granted. Just a few years ago, we needed to patiently wait on the news or wait during school hours to receive new updates. Overall, students can take advantage of having social media being used with their educational purposes. It will allow them to work on their assignments/projects using the online web, and keep them informed with recent school updates.

4. The Three Principles of Cyber Security

The Three Principle of Cyber Security are: Protecting the confidentiality of data; Preserving the integrity of data; and Promoting the availability of data for authorized use. Confidentiality means that the people receiving access to any site, should be given a limited and correct level of access. If access is not necessary for the duties of one, no access is required nor should be given. All times, the integrity of the information provided should be maintained. The information should always be accurate and represent the original without being changed by neither authorized or unauthorized users. The internal and external consistency of any programs or data should be maintained. Lastly, ensure availability. Authorized users should be able to access information when needed, especially during any emergencies. To ensure this, the information should always be ready. Three common challenges to availability are:

Denial of service (DoS) due to intentional attacks or because of undiscovered flaws in implementation (for example, a program written by a programmer who is unaware of a flaw that could crash the program if a certain unexpected input is encountered)

Loss of information system capabilities because of natural disasters (fires, floods, storms, or earthquakes) or human actions (bombs or strikes)

Equipment failures during normal use

Some activities that can be taken place to protect the confidentiality, preserve the integrity and promote availability are: using encryption, testing a computer security system, having a protective software, and creating a disaster recovery plan. These three goals are the basis and in order to achieve the end goal of a well-equipped security system, it involves putting in place several complex controls.

3. Lookout for Malware

“Malware is a software that is written specifically to harm and infect a computer or computer network.” There are many forms of malware, such as adware, viruses, spyware, worms, trojans and ransomware. Viruses spread from program to program within a quick amount of time if not detected and dealt with in time. Ransomware is a form of malware, which holds one hostage, and takes control of the situation. It restricts access to the computer until a fee is paid to the cybercriminal.  Well-Known ransomware is CryptoLocker. It encrypts emails, and displays a message asking for a payment by a specific deadline, or threatened to be deleted if deadline not met. Usually, the payment is asked through bitcoin or a pre-paid cash voucher. “Spyware is malicious software that spies on you and tracks your activities helping the hacker gather information about the victim’s system, without the consent of the victim.” One way this is commonly used is for transferring funds into unknown bank account holders while pretending to be you. Adware is commonly used by third parties, to see which sites are frequently used by one, to provide the necessary and relevant ads to go with it, doing this can get frustrating for the user as it slows the computer down. Worms are a form of malware which eats everything on their path. They make a replication of themselves, and destroy any files or documents saved on the PC, causing files to be deleted or corrupted. Cyberattacks have started to become more sophisticated, and the anti-virus and system protecting software need to be further enhanced to keep up to date with the latest cyber security.

2. Beware of Phishing

Students these days aren't aware of the malicious content that hackers tend to put out online. For instance, Instagram is a popular social media platform everyone wants everything everyone has; from brand names to certain types of clothing to the type lifestyles. What is being displayed out in public, is what some people crave for.  There are many spoofed sites that are being sponsored by certain stores, which in reality are not legitimate stores. The certain individuals who create these fake Instagram account and fake websites are their way of phishing and deceiving people. They target youths and adults for what they want to see, allowing you to click the link without even thinking twice. There is an algorithm that tracks all of the sites an individual has visited and scrolled through via insta or facebook. This algorithm personalizes your choice of likes and puts that on display first, as it will pursue you into checking out the site. The other method of this is also called clickbait. That is how it's being targeted to the innocent victims, who have been apart of the hack. Once you click on the malicious site, you input your credit card information and click submit. Days later, one will find out the credit card has been hacked or even e-mails. This is a tactic to obtain information from another account to use it for the hackers' benefits. Students are so consumed with the latest posts and likes, they disregard the cybersecurity issues behind it. “As per CIRA’s research, 44% of Canadians are reluctant to do business with firms that have suffered data breaches.”(Xbase, 2018) Xbase Technologies has also mentioned, 85% of the threats come from at least one phishing e-mail.

1. Cyber Threats Lurking on Social Media

Often we are told or heard to be careful when deciding what to post on social networking sites, especially ones which are shared and visible to many people. There have been many reports of third parties receiving users data, and personal data being taken for the purpose of advertising, with or without the user’s consent. Social engineering is a daunting security threat which has been growing, due to the mass loads of data posted by users on these platforms. To attack users, much is not needed to be done by hackers, as so much data is easily accessible. It is hard to enjoy social media, because of the many lurking hackers, aiming at the revenue-focused platforms. These platforms are the culprits of the increasing amount of privacy and security threats faced by users, who are usually unaware. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn are some huge global brands, which people might assume are relatively safe, when in reality they are some of the most common places where phishing occurs. Even though social media platforms are increasing their security features to allow users to feel safer, students should not rely just on that. The only way to attempt being safe is by being proactive and taking any preventive steps. Some precautions include: making sure passwords are stored in a safe place; not attaching personal accounts to professional accounts; staying away from providing personal information when it is not necessary; sharing locations or relevant data; not directly clicking on any unknown links or invitations and utilizing privacy settings.

Using Google Syntax

How would you search for an exact word or phrase?

In order to search for a specific phrase or word, you must include quotation marks in your search query. By adding these quotations, google will instantly try to identify what you are looking for.

2. How would you search for something on a specific site?

In order to search something on a specific site, you must type, site:domain name.com. For example if you are looking for York University, you would type, site:yorkuniversity.com. This allows to find only related searches from the specific website

3. How would you correctly search for a definition?

To correctly search for a definition on google for instance, you would type for example define:happy.  By inputting define, it identifies the exact term from the query to give you the right definition

4.How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range?

To search for a specific product available within a specific price range you must add the interested product, followed by then starting range price , two dots then the end range price. For example, google for shampoo between $10.00..$50.00 and you will see the fine result.

5.How would you search for a specific filetype?

In order to search a specific file type, you can type, filetype: following by the type of format you want such as PDF, RTF and etc. If this was typed in the search bar, google will be able to indicate e speciifc filetype

6. How would you include or ignore words in your search?

To include or ignore words in your search you must the “-“ sign to exclude a term from the search.

7. How would you find sites/pages similar to an existing one?

To find sites/pages similar to an existing you must type in the search bar related: to the content you’re looking for. This will enable you to view the content you're looking for.

8. How would you confirm the exact form of a quote even if you were missing some of the words?

In order to confirm the exact form of a quote even If you were missing some of the words, you would place an (*) asterisk with those words. By inputting the asterisk it allows google to search for all the different possibilities of the quote containing those words.

9. How would search for pages containing two connected words?

To search for pages containing two connected words you will have to use either an and or to connect them in the search query.

10. How would you search for social media content containing a specific tag?

To search for social media content containing a specific tag, you can use the “@“ symbol to find a specific account.
