She did her best to stifle the giggle as he did his best to try to do the script. "I don't blame you I don't think I would either."

She'd flopped onto the bar stool pulling off the jacket that identified her as a dispatcher. There was enough first responders in the area that she wanted to take a moment to have a beer on her own before the remaining social battery she had was gone. "Um do you have angry orchard? If not I'll go jack and coke."

"It's a bit of bullshit," he agreed, jaw ticked. He was going to tell Henry this was never going to happen again. "Owner's a moron."

"Nah, we got that—one second." he held up a finger before turning his back to her and digging through their fridge under the bar. He pulled out the bottle and turned back to her, opening it up in front of her so she could see it was fresh and untampered before sliding it across the wood of the counter to her.

He looked her over for a moment before his eyes landed on her jacket. "Nice gig. Volunteer firefighter and soon-to-be EMT. Maybe we'll cross paths in the system. Uh, James Henderson," he introduced, and placed his hands on the counter to lean.

"Look, I know we're all gung-ho here to get this job done...but something's not right," Marney sat up on her bunk and looked over at him. She'd already gone to two other people, both of whom had told her that she was overreacting. She didn't know better than those above them. She respected the chain of command until she thought it would get them killed.

Her last chance was Staff Sergeant Cross. "Sir, I know it's easier to pretend that these people don't have lives like us. I've been out in the field listening to them—the wives. There's been talk about us." She sat up straighter on her bed, hands reaching for the mattress. This was either going to get her demoted or have her put down for breaking the chain of command since she was only Corporal Dawson now.

"Sarge, they know we're going to hit that building, and I don't want to see us go into an ambush," she spat out, frustrated with how this was turning out. She had hours before they would have to be asleep so they could wake early in the morning to take the building, increasing their area of coverage.

She'd noticed that the women had stopped going into the building, the children too, and now they went in so rarely. That, and at the markets while on patrol, she'd heard the whispers of something big waiting for the Americans. She'd managed to bribe one of the wives she'd seen often with books for her children and extra food rations.

"One of the women said there was going to be a fireworks show, and I don't think she meant actual fireworks if you catch my drift."

There was no reason for them to know, and she looked at Cross, held his gaze, hoping he'd understand there was more to this. Marney suspected a rat. Someone had to be feeding them information, or they never would have known about the building and their trying to take more territory.

Willow raised the old fashioned to her lips and took a long sip from it and hummed just a little the warmth settling in her chest. "Let me know if you need more elbow room pretty sure the guy next to me would do anything I ask."

Marney sat down, waved down the bartender for her whiskey, before turning to her new bar set buddy, "I like to hear that type of attitude. You never know what sort of people you'll meet." She slid the money across, leaving a generous tip when she pulled the glass back to her lips and downed it.

"I can see why, you're a pretty girl. Marney Dawson," she introduced herself. "Use it until you lose it, and by the time you lose it, just make sure you've got money or a fun attitude to fall back on," she winked and tapped for the bartender to come over again.

I've got a man on the back of the bus, fell rock climbing, pulled him out of the woods screaming bloody murder. Compound fracture of his arm, it's stabilized, and I've got a makeshift tourniquet from when we found him."

"A live one and yours to put where you please," he looked around before saying lower, "bit of a rich punk, Ma'am...I don't think Daddy's money is going to fix his arm like he thinks."

"Just your little buddy," he laughed, eyes following her movement. "A criminal record? And still a surgeon, impressive. Were you robbing Girl Scouts of America as a kid?" Igraine had said Willow was one of her favorite people, someone she didn't feel like she was just 'putting up with' when dealing with co-workers.

"Igs, said you might have some good ideas, theme nights or whatever for the bar...said if I offered you some good booze you might allow me into your brain since you've lived here your whole life."

The world seemed to hold its breath with this operation and all Morrigan could really think about was how she had seen this all before. The pressure on the Americans was at its peak and every time she entered camp, you could feel the tension in the air.

Joint operations weren't that much spoken off, but they were necessary in war efforts. They needed a point in, or they would have to again run with their tails between their legs, something she quite enjoyed. She did not have a soft heart for these people, she had been trained to do so, but she never really forgot her true mission, something about that just stuck.

Even if they were in the November months, it was still rather hot, and she was looking for a unit they had assigned to her for a particular mission. She stopped in front of the merry band and took her glasses off. "So...you're going to be my escort?" she asked to no one in particular, because while she had names and files, and knew just who did what, she did want to see who would speak up first, telling of one's character to do so.

The waiting was the worst part. It wasn’t fear. Fear was a simple feeling, but this sat on his chest, weighing on him, and it settled deeper each day as the operation drew closer. They pretended life was normal, but nobody was fooled. He’d called his wife, whispered he’d see her later, and gone about his day for the next two days.

Henderson saw her from a distance but paid no mind until she stood in front of their unit. He’d put out the cigarette hanging from between his lips. “That’s us,” he answered for them, eyes trailing over, sizing her up. He wasn’t subtle—nothing predatory, just trying to get a rough idea of who she was, maybe as a person. Not that it would matter much, once shit hit the fan, you were either stuck together or shattered.

“James Henderson, ma’am.” he gave her a nod and held out a gloved hand in welcome. “I’m assuming you’re aware of the absolute shit show we’re about to enter.” He held her gaze after she had taken off her glasses. The rest of the crew stood as well; one of them snorted at his statement. Men checked their rifles for the third and fourth time alone that day. Some were smoking in small groups, staring toward a city as if they could see what was coming.
