As they headed further down the street and away from the Inn, Clark tried to piece together what had actually happened in there.

Running over the conversation in his mind, he almost didn’t notice Lois spinning around to face him and found himself almost bumping into her as a result. She looked up at him, her face only inches from his. Was that a twinkle of flirtation in her eyes? It kinda seemed like she was enjoying the closeness as much as he was.

No, don’t be silly. There’s no way Lois Lane is interested in Mr Green Jeans.

‘Did you get it?’ Lois asked as he self-consciously backed away, tugging at his jacket again.

‘Get what?’ he asked.

He was still completely clueless as to why she’d even arranged that interview, only to leave just a few minutes later.

She grinned at him, grabbing the voice recorder out of his hands and hitting rewind. ‘Oh Smallville, you’ve really gotta pay more attention,’ she said, patting his arm. ‘What evidence did we have before we went in there?’

‘A page of their ledger,’ he confirmed, still not sure where she was going.

‘And how do we know it’s a page of their ledger?’ she asked, her voice hinting at a truth she clearly thought was obvious.

‘Uh… because your source claims it is,’ he said, starting to feel the pieces coming together.

‘Exactly,’ she said, clapping a hand on his shoulder. ‘I can’t reveal my source or they’d be in danger. And if we’d taken that page to the police on it’s own, they’d have laughed us out of the station. Even though those books clearly dont add up, there was no way of actually tying it to the Green Horse Inn.’

Clark’s eyes widened and his expression shifted into one of admiration. ‘… you got him to confirm it was a page from his own ledger.’

‘See! I knew you weren’t just a pretty face!’ she exclaimed.

He felt himself blushing at the confusing compliment.

Thankfully she wasn’t looking, her attention fully on the tape recorder as it finished rewinding. Lois hit play and they both waited in anticipation for the interview at the Inn to once again come alive.

To his horror, Clark’s own voice came blaring out of the little speaker instead.

Take laundry to the dry cleaners. Help Mrs Gableman with her broken hand-rail. Call mom and thank her for the adjustments to the suit. Drop card off for Bibbo at the Ace of Clubs.

Clark grabbed the device out of Lois’ hand in a panic and fumbled for the pause button. He looked up at her, completely mortified that not only had she heard his embarrassing habit of recording verbal to do lists, but he’d obviously made a huge error there was no way to take back.

He hadn’t pressed record.

‘What the hell?’ she said, looking confused at first. Then a dark look crossed her features and she squinted up at him. ‘Wait… don’t tell me you didn’t press record?’

Clark swallowed the giant lump that formed in his throat. He wanted to look away from the death stare she was giving him, but he couldn’t seem to force himself to break her gaze, so he simply gave his most sincere apologetic look in return.

‘I’m so sorry Lois… I must have pressed the wrong button.’

He wished the earth would open up beneath his feet.

Unbelievable. How can you get something so simple so wrong?

She glared at him for a moment more, frustration flashing through her eyes. He wished the ground would just swallow him up. Then she did something he never would have predicted.

She burst into laughter. Hard.

‘Oh my god, Clark,’ she managed to wheeze out, holding herself around the middle. ‘I so want to be mad at you, but… that face!’

Before he knew it, he was laughing too, her unexpected outburst becoming completely infectious. The tension of the previous moment disappeared completely.

‘I will make it up to you, I swear,’ he said emphatically once they’d both settled back down.

‘Oh, yeah you will,’ she said, wiping tears from her eyes and steadying her breathing. ‘But I don’t think I’m ever going to let you live this one down. I’ll be bringing it up years from now.’

Clark cocked his head slightly at the suggestion he’d still be in her life years in the future, but he brushed it aside. ‘Seriously though, I mean it. We can’t just let this guy continue running this operation. What else can we do?’

Lois gave him a skeptical look. ‘I think we’ll just have to keep digging. He’s definitely not going to see us again now. Short of breaking in and getting pictures of his whole operation, I don’t know that there’s anything more we can do.’

Clark hesitated for a moment. He knew what he was about to do was stupidly risky… but when it came to impressing Lois Lane, he could be irrationally impulsive.

‘Wait here,’ he said, and she cocked an eyebrow at him in response, not used to him giving her the orders.

‘Where are you going?’

‘Just give me 5 minutes,’ he said, lifting up his camera bag.

‘To do what?’

‘You’re not the only one who’s got a knack for being sneaky you know,’ he said with a wink, dashing back towards the Inn before she could protest.

Heatwave

Lois mutters a string of expletives as she climbs off the bed, fanning herself emphatically with her hands. 

'This is insane, Clark, there's no way I'm going to be able to sleep in this heat!' 

Clark sits up on the bed next to hers, offering a sympathetic expression. Being unaffected by heat is one of many things his Kryptonian body is useful for. 

'Want me to get some ice?' 

Lois glares at him. 'Don't you think I thought of that? Apparently this piece of shit motel can't afford to fix their ice machine any more than they can fix their air con. You'd think for the ridiculous prices they charge they could-' 

Clark drifts off mid rant. Sweat glistens on his partner's skin, the thin fabric of her vest top sticking to her body in all the right places. 

Suddenly, he does feel flushed, though it's for very different reasons…

Maybe they could both do with some ice.

‘Just let me take a look. I learned a few things growing up on a farm,' Clark insists once she's finished.

His eyes are fixed on her face as he speaks, refusing to allow them any more furtive glances south. But even the shine of her sweat moistened lips is enough to make him swallow.

The other side of the door can't come fast enough.

Clark closes it behind him, letting out a breath he's been holding. He takes a quick look around to see that he's not being watched, then heads over to the alcove where the ice machine sits. It's late and most of the lights are out, but a flickering street lamp illuminates his way. 

When he arrives at the ice machine, he uses his X-Ray vision to see the damage. 

Crap. 

The mess inside makes him hesitate. 

This thing isn't just broken. It looks like it's gone unused for years. For a second he wonders if he should just go back empty handed. No human could plausibly fix this thing up, let alone get water to freeze into cubes in a matter of minutes. 

But then he remembers how short Lois' purple pyjama shorts are…

No, it's worth the risk. 

He'll just have to hope she's too grateful to question his method. 

In just a few seconds of super speed plumbing and cleaning, followed by freeze breath ice cube making, Clark clutches a cold bucket to his chest. 

His partner is ecstatic. 

There's a good few minutes of feeling relieved he's solved both of their problems before the unexpected downside of his plan hits him. 

Lois moans as she places one of the ice cubes at the back of her neck, then slides it over her chest, cooling her exposed skin inch by excruciating inch. 

Why has she started hand moving in slow motion? 

Clark realises his mouth is hanging open just in time to shut it before she looks his way. But if he's not mistaken, there's a flirtatious edge to her expression when their eyes finally meet.  

‘Oh, sorry Clark, is this bothering you?’ she says with a wry smile. 

‘Me?’ he replies, voice coming out much too high. He adjusts his pitch. ‘Just uh… thinking we should put those bottles of water in the ice bucket.’

The flimsy cover at least gives him an excuse to stand and turn away from her. He points himself towards their bags, strolls over, and fishes out the drinks they bought at the airport. 

He's tempted to dump one all over himself, but concludes that might be even more of a giveaway. 

Just act normal Clark. She's your partner, she's your-

The sensation of ice on the back of his neck makes him yelp in surprise. His partner giggles as he spins around. The look on his face must be quite the picture, because she covers her mouth. 

‘Sorry, didn't mean to surprise you,’ she says. ‘Just thought you should try it. Feels good doesn't it?’ 

She gestures for his permission to go again, standing so close and smelling so good that he's rendered mute. All he can do is nod. His eyes follow her hand as she places the cube of ice against his skin again, sliding it over every exposed inch she can see. He shivers when she dips a little below his t-shirt collar. 

She smiles, satisfied. 

He thinks he might just be falling in love with that smile. 

‘Bit cooler now?’ she asks. 

Clark nods again, but really, it's a lie. He's never felt more on fire in his life. 

Lois steps back, eyes drifting over the moisture her ice work has left behind. ‘Okay, I'm going to try and sleep. Wake me up if I sleep through my alarm?’ 

Clark nods, then wordlessly climbs back onto his own bed. He collapses onto his back,  staring up at the ceiling with wide eyes. 

She's snoring lightly after a few minutes, but there's no chance of sleep for him tonight. 

All he can manage are a few wildly inappropriate dreams.

A Little Piece of Home

Clark tried to do something, anything, to show the man defiance. He pressed his palms beneath him, managed to push himself an inch off the ground - and then collapsed again, the small effort taking so much out of that he couldn't hold back a scream as the next rising tide of pain swept through him. 

‘Don’t worry, Superman,’ Lex continued once he'd stilled again. His voice was thick with sickening satisfaction. ‘I have no intention of killing you today. I just needed you to know that this little feud of ours is over. It has been a fun challenge while it lasted, but I think it’s time you kept your nose out of my business. You can carry on saving all the innocent cats stuck in trees you want, but from now on, you stay out of my way.’ 

Luthor paused, glaring down at him. Then he turned to face Lois, adding, ‘Both of you.’ 

‘Go to hell, Luthor,’ Lois spat back, but Clark could hear the emotion she was masking. 

He tried again to lift himself, this time not even managing to separate himself from the ground. It felt like gravity had been dialled up to a thousand, weighting him to the rooftops surface helplessly. 

Blackness began pushing in at the edges of his vision, along with a fuzziness that would soon evolve into unconsciousness. He fought against it, willing himself to stay awake. Couldn't just abandon Lois to Luthor's whim, even if he was powerless to stop it either way. 

To his surprise, Luthor retrieved a small metal box and placed the green rock inside. 

As soon as the lid closed, the weight keeping him pressed to the floor was lifted. The pain subsided so fast he pulled in a shocked breath, coughing as his lungs struggled to process the sudden intake. 

‘Well, I'd better be going. Have to pick my daughter up from school. I'd say this has been a productive meeting though, wouldn't you?’ 

With one final smirk in Clark's direction, Lex and his goons strode towards the door back into the building. 

Lois. Where was Lois? 

Clark managed to lift himself onto all fours, picking his head up to search for her. But she was already rushing to his side, crouching beside him and taking his chin gently in her hand. 

‘Are you okay?’ they both asked at one. 

She half smiled, in spite of everything. ‘I'm fine. They didn't hurt anything but my pride. Are you…?'

‘I think so…’

‘What the hell was that?’ 

Clark shook his head, trying to process the blurry nightmare that was the last few minutes. The pain he'd felt was now completely gone, but he was still weak, disoriented. 

She caught on. ‘Do you think you can stand?’ 

He nodded, though he wasn't really sure. With a bit of support from Lois, he made it to his feet, pausing to let a dizzy spell pass. 

‘I have some spare work clothes. Hidden under the air vent,’ he said, his voice sounding slurred.

She nodded, leaving him propped up against the fire door as she searched for his disguise. 

God he was tired. 

More tired than he'd ever felt in his life. 

It was going to take everything he had to get himself home. 

Lois returned with his clothes, and with great difficulty, they managed to get him out of his suit and into the pair of dress pants and white shirt. She placed his familiar glasses onto his face, and he felt oddly comforted by the presence of the frames. 

He was just Clark Kent now. The invisible nobody. There was safety in that. 

Lois gave him a once over before declaring, ‘Okay, let's get you home.’

Clark was too exhausted to do anything but follow her lead. He trudged what felt like the thousand steps out of the building, both too nervous of running into someone they knew in the elevator and being stuck with questions they'd rather not answer. 

By the time she had him piled into the back of a cab, he had no will left in him to fight the fatigue trying to claim him. 

He could see Lois’ mouth moving as his eyes began to droop, but no sound met his ears. 

And then he was just… gone.

The Most Beautiful Sight

'Okay, just a few more feet.'

Clark carefully guided his new fiance into position at the top of the hill.

Fiance.

He was still getting used to that.

Just a few paces away lay a picnic blanket, with an array of locally made foods spread out in baskets and on plates. He'd promised Lois he was going to show her all the best parts of Smallville, and he'd meant it.

The view had to come first though.

He had so many memories up here. The hilltop sat right in the farm's back fields, and had a stunning view. It had been his Dad's favourite spot. Clark would often find him up here, just watching the sunset, letting the peaceful scene wash away the busyness of the day.

He'd asked him once, 'Do you ever get tired of looking at that?'

'No, never have,' his Dad had confirmed. 'Guess I never will.'

As it turned out, neither had Clark.

'Come on Clark, can I open my eyes now?' Lois protested.

He grinned. The very fact he'd managed to convince Lois Lane to let him lead her, eyes closed, all the way up here, was a testament to how much she loved him.

But he knew she had her limits.

'Okay, open your eyes,' he said.

Then held his breath.

She gasped.

'Clark...' she said dreamily.

He exhaled. Joy washing through him. The sky was a watercolour of pink and yellow, the fading sun just peaking out from the horizon. A small flock of birds hovered overhead, dancing in a rhythmic formation as they glided across the landscape.

His timing had been perfect.

Lois turned, smiling broadly, twinkling eyes meeting his. He'd thought the view from up here was perfect. That nothing would ever beat it.

Turns out he was wrong.

Her beautiful face, illuminated by the warmth of the kansas sun, was much, much better.

'It's incredible,' she breathed, returning her gaze to the sky.

Clark moved closer, so that they were standing side by side. He slipped his hand into hers, and she gave it a welcoming squeeze. There were a thousand things he wanted to say, but somehow, it felt like words would ruin the moment. So he just closed his eyes, breathing in the familiar smells, feeling the soft breeze on his skin.

To his surprise, he felt lips pressed against his. Eyes fluttered open, flustered by the suddeness of her kiss, but he caught on quickly, returning the gesture with all the love he could give.

She pulled back, stroking his cheek softly.

'Thank you for bringing me here,' she whispered. Her eyes flitted towards the picnic blanket. 'Is that fresh bread?'

Clark laughed. 'And cheese. Cold cuts. Strawberries.'

'Ahhh, you are the BEST, I love you!' she exclaimed, already diving into the biggest hamper.

He shook his head, something he did a lot these days, like he was in a permanent state of disbelief he could be so lucky.

What more could he want in the world than to be right here, in his favourite place, with the most beautiful woman in the world.

And know that she loved him.

Blue Tulips: A Symbol of Peace, Trust, and Loyalty.

No one had ever been in the “Fortress of Solitude” before. Not even Clark’s own mother. It was his… special place. A little slice of Krypton on Earth. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to share this part of his life with his ma. It’s just… it was Krypton. All that was left of Krypton, at least, other than him. 

His Ma couldn’t understand. She was his mother through and through, the woman who raised him and loved him no matter what challenges he brought his family.

But this part of his life…

No, his Ma could never understand. 

But Lois? Things were different with Lois. Once Lois had gotten over the initial shock of who he was, he knew he had to share it with her. He had to share all parts of who he was. 

He had to take her to the Fortress. 

“A bit… man cavey,” the perpetually blunt Lois said. 

Clark simply smiled. “Well, I am a man. And it’s literally in a cave.”

Lois scoffed and asked to be brought back to Smallville. His heart sank. She didn’t understand. She didn’t want to be a part of this side of his life. 

Lois asked to be dropped off on Main Street. Clark wiped a tear as he flew away. 

A short while later she called for him to return. She had a vase in her hands, filled with blue tulips. She handed it to him, beaming. “That cave of yours needs brightening up.”

Butterflies fluttered in his stomach. She wasn’t rejecting that part of his life. She was adding her own personal touch to it.  

“They won’t get a lot of sunlight up there,” Clark pointed out.

Lois shrugged. “They’re cut. Besides, that just means I’ll need to come by again to replace them after they dry out.” She stood up on her tiptoes. Their lips were just out of reach, so Clark helped close the gap. They kissed. 

“Thank you for trusting me.” Lois squeezed him tight.

S&L Fanweek Day 3 Prompt: Favourite Episode

In one of my two all time favourite episodes (1x11 A brief reminiscence in between cataclysmic events) we see Clark's memories of meeting Lois Lane. Here's a ficlet exploring what was going through Lois's mind that day.

First Impressions

'Stick with Lane, she'll show you the ropes.' 

Lois catches Perry's voice as he barrels past her, leaving the poor newbie stumbling over his reply as he grinds to a halt. 

She sighs, stepping out from Jimmy's desk, ignoring the teasing expression on her face. Sure, she'd rather not be given babysitting duty, but she knows better than to contest it right now. After the mess at City Hall last week, Perry would have her covering giant cookie competitions in a heartbeat. 

'Who told you to wear a tie,' she calls out, and the newbie spins around like a flustered deer in head lights. 

He sees her, clocks that she's the one who spoke. 

And then he's just... staring at her. 

For a really long time…

What is this guy's problem? 

At first it's just weird, but there's something innocent in his expression that tells her he's not a creep. 

He's just kind of star struck. 

It's… sweet. 

Lois' lip starts to curl into a smile, finding the ongoing puppy dog expression inexplicably adorable. 

But she doesn't want HIM to know that. 

So she covers the almost smile with a flippant, 'Let me guess, Lombard?' and strolls right past him, letting him pick up the unspoken cue to follow. 

'Though he can get box seats for the meteors,' she adds, striding through the Daily Planet newsroom with confidence. 'You like baseball?'

She's doing a pretty good job of forgetting about the new guy's strangeness - and cuteness - when his response throws her off again. 

'Uh... of course. I mean, who doesn't love America's past time, Miss Lane?' 

Is he for real? 

Lois feels her face crinkling. 'It's Lois. What did you say your name was again?' 

'Uh... Kent. Clark. Clark Kent,' he jibbers back. 

Okay, she's gotta get a look at him again. 

She spins around- 

-and slams right into his shoulder. 

Damn. He's more solid than he looks! 

She can't stop herself from giving him a little once over. His suitcase looks like an antique. The suit he's wearing is badly fitted. And those horn-rimmed glasses dull the bright blue of his eyes. 

But he's definitely cute. Maybe even hot… 

'Hmmm, never met a Clark before,' she says curiously. 

As hard as it is to pin down, she's becoming sure she's never met anyone quite like him. Most people were so easy to read. Lois had them sized up and categorised by the end of the first hand shake. 

But this one... nervous, polite, seemingly unassuming. And yet she couldn't ignore the sense there was something more beneath the first impression. A magnetism his kinda dorky demeanour usually hid. 

'Oh... I've never met a Lois before either!' He says with a grin. 'Actually there was my first grade teacher Mrs Hannigan, so technically-'

Simons passes her a print out of Perry's latest memo, and she uses the exchange as an excuse to resume the walk to her desk, before the newbie sees her failing to stifle another smile. 

Come on Lane, get a grip! 

He follows, still rambling. 'You know Miss Hannigan was actually my favourite teacher. She taught me about fractions and cursive...' 

'Mystery Man strikes again. Third time this month,' Gavin announces beside them, handing her a photo print. 

Lois' good mood plummets.

This guy again. 

Metropolis' new flying hero in red and blue. 

'Where was he?' she says, trying to sound only vaguely interested. 

It's not that she begrudges him saving lives or anything. It's just… he's been all anyone wants to talk about for months. 

Perry had tried to get her on the case for a week, but she'd refused point blank. The atom man story she was working on was way more important than this flashy distraction. 

'Saved a boat sinking off Hobbs River. Jimmy even got a photo. This is my Pulitzer Lane! I can feel it.'  

Good for you Gavin. 

Personally, she'd rather win her Pulitzer for some real investigative journalism. Not a celebrity puff piece. 

Lois takes a seat at her desk, almost forgetting the new guy, Clark, is still standing there. 

'Seems like a pretty big story,' he comments, smiling like he's just as bowled over by the superhero as everyone else. 

Lois rolls her eyes. 'Yeah, which every reporter here is tripping over themselves to cover. Boys and their heroes.' 

She sighs, knowing it's probably a little bit unfair to lump him in to that category. Any other guy might have bristled, gotten defensive, made some sort of chauvinistic comment in return... 

But not this one. 

He laughs, still smiling. 'Aren't heroes a good thing?' 

The innocent twinkle behind his eyes makes her drop her guard enough to answer honestly. 'Yeah of course. And I know that we need this guy, it's just that ever since he showed up, he's been dominating the conversation.' 

She pauses briefly, surprised to see he's actually… listening. 

So she continues. 

'Metropolis has so many problems that aren't just rescue operations, they're systemic. Here, look at this.' 

She hands him the photos she printed out earlier. Atom Man's latest victims. Entire neighbourhoods being burned to the ground. 

Just talking about it is already making her anger flare again. 

'These lightning bolts..?' 

'Nazi symbols,' she confirms. 'They've been popping up all over Metropolis along with a rash of arson attacks on minority owned businesses.' 

'Do you have any idea who's responsible?' 

'By all amounts some psycho in a metal mask and a trench coat.' 

He stares at the photo for a long moment before he speaks, voice thick with what sounds like genuine dismay. 'I didn't know about this.'  

Something about the way he says it almost sounds... guilty?

Weird. 

'That's my point exactly. I have been covering this for months only my reporting keeps getting drowned out by everyone's favourite Miracle Man.' 

This time she doesn't bother masking the bitterness in her tone. She watches carefully as he processes everything she's said, not really expecting much. He's not the first person she's told, and the majority of reactions were the same. They'd tell her it was a damn shame, give her a patronising pat on the head for trying to be champion of the oppressed. 

Even Perry, as much as she respected him, was starting to get antsy about her spending so much time on this instead of 'bigger' stories. 

They all agreed what was happening downtown in suicide slums was awful. 

But no one was willing to put the work in to do something about it. 

Clark shakes his head, and she braces for a sad sigh along with some vague statement of generalised sympathy.

'How can I help?' 

Well... that's new.

There's no hiding the smile that tugs at her cheeks now. In fact, the earnestness in his expression makes her want him to see. 

There are still a lot of things she doesn't know about Mr Clark Kent. He's an intruiging mystery yet to be solved. 

But he's just managed something very few people ever do.

He's impressed her.

Summary: Clark and Lois celebrate their first month together in Clark’s apartment.

Clark paced in his small apartment, fingertips rubbing onto the bridge of his nose. Nearly hitting the coffee table for the ninth time, he floated up, instead deciding to pace in the air.

He had already cleaned the entire apartment; dishes spotless, floors meticulously mopped, even the walls and ceiling dusted. But it still didn’t feel like enough. It never did, not when someone like Lois Lane was coming over. 

And today was a special day too—their first month anniversary, and for some incredibly odd reason, Lois humored him and offered for them to watch one of his favorite movies—Star Wars.

He could even still hear his response back—the promise to watch one of her favorite shows, Star Trek, the following month, which she had responded with a pout and a reluctant ‘fine’, hand waving in such a way that if he didn’t know any better, he would’ve thought she’d been disappointed.

But he did know her. The light that had shone in her beautiful blue eyes, widening more and more at each word? There was no doubt how excited she had been at the suggestion, even with her body language suggesting otherwise.

Clark huffed out a forced breath, pausing in his spot in the air. He looked over his living room, eyes catching on the perfectly folded blankets on his couch. And then onto the brown curtain lining his only front window, freshly washed and steamed, wrinkle-free. Even his journalism books were rearranged, now resting neatly in the center of his coffee table. They looked so incredibly perfect, Lois would probably wonder if Clark had ever opened them. 

Which he had, by the way. For a solid three minutes. A long time in the grand scheme of things.

But maybe it was too clean in here? There was still the faint scent of lemon and fresh linen, too…or was that his super smell convincing him it was still perceptible?

He was still new to all this—new to Lois admitting, officially, that she liked him, even if it was a month ago. What if she’d find this level of cleanliness too much?

Clark hovered back to the floor, taking off his glasses. He rubbed the surfaces between his fingertips and flannel, but all it did was smudge the existing dirt on them, creating an obvious smear across the lens.

He couldn’t help but laugh at that. After everything he had done ahead of time to prepare for this? After showering and shaving and getting his hair to fall in the perfect spot across his forehead, he had forgotten to clean his glasses.

With a smile still on his face, he headed to the kitchen and dug through his junk drawer to find a cleaning cloth. He rubbed the cloth against the lens, happy to see the grime disappear.

A knock echoed through the apartment.

Clark glanced at the front door, putting on his glasses in the same breath. The steady heartbeat coming from the other side gave away who it was before his brain could catch up on how obvious it was in the first place.

Even after all the days he spent by her side, he still felt the nerves flutter in his stomach and up his chest, knowing that Lois was here. For him.

Not for work. For him.

It was only a recent change, but still something he wasn’t sure he’d ever get used to.

Clark straightened out his flannel with a soft tug and then headed to the door with a speed that was all too fast yet all too slow. Opening it, the gap widened to the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.

Lois Lane.

With a backdrop of Metropolis’s city lights, the faint shimmer of stars in the darkened sky, and the air of beautiful, headstrong confidence, there she stood, as stunning as always.

Time stood still as she looked at him, and Clark sucked in a steady breath, taking everything in.

He could smell the fragrance of her shampoo, fresh hints of rose. Her body wash, blooming lavender. And her laundry detergent, fresh-cut lilacs.

She was a walking bouquet of flowers.

What Happens in the Cloakroom

'Can you hold these? I think there's another rack back here.'

Lois doesn't wait for a response before shoving the pile of coats at him.

Flustered, Clark almost drops them, the jumble of expensive fabrics more slippery than he'd thought. Faux fur and satin may as well have been the night club's secret dress code. He watches as his partner dives back in, scrambling through the second rack at lightning speed, and he can't help but shake his head, a now familiar smile tugging at his cheeks.

'Don't you feel even the slightest bit weird about going through people's belongings?'

The question is met with a derisive snort, but she doesn't turn around. 'Not these people, Clark. I doubt they even wear their clothes more than once. Besides, sometimes the end justifies the means.'

Clark's head picks up at the sound of footsteps and he uses his x-ray vision to scan the hallway. It's only a bartender coming back from the cellar, but the anxiety gripping his chest stays until the young man disappears inside the club's main hall.

It was a waste really. First (and probably last) time attending Metropolis' most elite night club, and so far all he'd seen of it was the much too cramped cloak room.

'I got it!' Lois shrieked.

Clark felt his grin widening as she began shuffling backwards out of the packed rail of garments, emerging with hair in disarray. She casually blew a rather pesky lock out of her face, clutching a folded envelope in her hands triumphantly.

'That's great Lois. Now let's get out of here before-'

The second set of footsteps he heard were louder, more purposeful. He scanned through the wall again, this time dismayed to see the cloak room attendant heading right their way.

'Someone's coming,' he whispered at his partner's questioning expression.

'Damnit Jimmy, you couldn't keep her busy for five minutes…’

Clark regards her in panic, realising they never actually discussed a game plan for if she came back.

'Okay... here,' Lois grabs the pile of coats from his arms and flings them onto the floor.

Then before he can stop her, she's flinging him right down on top of them.

'Lois, what the-?'

Her body settling over him silences his unfinished question. Too stunned to respond at first, he freezes as her lips press against his, but the sound of the door being opened kicks him into action. He returns the kiss with as much passion as he can, ignoring the flickers of self consciousness.

It's all for show, after all.

Gotta follow his partners lead.

By the time the coat check lady is through the door, he's forgotten they are even in a cloakroom.

Lois’ tongue dancing with his own has sent his brain into a state of blissful euphoria. He pulls free just enough to trail a few kisses along her jaw, landing on her neck, his whole body shivering as her breath hitches.

'Oh my god, what the...'

Clark registers the sound of someone's voice behind him, but it's an effort to pull himself back to reality. In the end, it's Lois gently shoving him off her and feigning embarrassment, that breaks the spell.

'Oops, babe, I think we better go,' she says, scrambling to her feet and offering her hand to pull him up.

'Damn right you better go! I should call the cops! This is not that kind of establishment!'

Lois giggles as Clark sways slightly, heady, too stunned to speak. She takes his hand and leads him swiftly past the woman's indignant fury, down the stairs and back out onto the Metropolis street. The cool night air is a welcome refresher.

'Well, that was... a useful cover,' she teases. 'I knew bringing you along tonight was the right call.'

Clark swallows. 'Glad I could help.’

Their eyes meet for a long moment as she reaches out to straighten the collar of his shirt. She's done it before, but the action feels much more charged now, her hands lingering longer than they should.

Her eyes fall on his lips, and for a brief, electrifying second he thinks she might be about to kiss him again.

But then she reaches into her pocket, retrieving the envelope. A different hunger takes over now, though her eyes still twinkle.

‘Let's get this to Perry,’ she declares. 'We can still write the story before for the morning edition.'

As he watches her hail a cab, the disappointment quickly fades. He knows how lucky he is to be by this woman's side at all.

Though he can't help but wonder if maybe, one day, they'll get to try that again.

Preferably not in a pile of strangers coats.

What It Takes

The sound of his wife's soft snoring greeted him as he floated through the bedroom window. Clark moved slowly, careful not to wake her with a sudden gust of air. Once inside, he drifted into the bathroom, gently pulling the door closed behind him.

The sight of his reflection in the mirror made him even more grateful she hadn't been awake.

He looked awful. Drained. Haunted.

It was 3am. He could hardly believe he'd been out there so long, the entire evening's events flying past in a haze of decimated buildings and bodies. Some living. Some already dead. All he'd been able to do was keep acting, keep diving back in to try and save a life.

Then another. And another.

Even once the last buried heart beat had fallen silent, he'd kept going. Kept fishing through the rubble, pulling body after body to the surface. He might have failed to save them, but their families would need some closure. He could still give them that.

It was an ambulance captain who'd stopped him. She hadn't even had to say much. Just rested a hand on his shoulder, forcing him to turn around and meet her gaze. He was sure he must have looked pretty dishevelled by that point, superpowers or not. The knowing, empathetic expression she gave him nearly obliterated the fixed mask he usually held so well in public.

'You've done everything you can,' she said. 'We've got it from here.'

Clark hadn't even resisted.

Maybe permission from someone on the scene was all he'd need, some reassurance that they wouldn't feel abandoned as they continued their search through this mass grave.

Throughout the flight home, he'd felt numb. But now, standing in his en suite, the familiar sights of home around him, the torrent of overwhelming feelings began to surge.

He closed his eyes, focusing on his breath like he'd done 1000 times before. This wasn't exactly his first rodeo. He'd seen countless disasters, some with even higher death counts than the earthquake tonight.

You'd think it would get easier.

It never did.

An unexpected sob caught in his throat. He held it back, but could feel the pressure building in his chest. His hands rested on the porcelain sink, shoulders trembling. It took all his remaining strength to hold back the tide.

When it passed, he was breathless. His cheeks were wet with tears.

There had just been so many children...

Bile churned in his stomach at the reminder of images he would never unsee.

This was what he was trying to protect his sons from. Why he insisted they weren't ready yet.

It wasn't the physical danger. It wasn't his fear that they would get something wrong or some lunatic villain would go after them.

It was the psychological strain. The heaviness he had to find his way back from again and again.

The hidden cost of being a hero.

He just wanted to spare them that, for a few years longer.

Clark splashed his face with cool water. Once, twice. Letting his fingers massage away some of the tension in his cheeks, bringing back a little colour. He quickly changed out of his suit, covered in blood and debris. It felt wrong to place it in the laundry bin, so he tucked it into a plastic bag.

He'd wash it later. Didn't want Lois to have to deal with that.

Tentatively, he poked his fingers through the crack in the door, teasing it open. The snoring had stopped, but she was lying still, eyes still closed. He floated over the floorboards, carefully lowering herself onto the bed.

She stirred.

Dammit!

'Hmm, hey babe,' she whispered.

'Hey,' he said, placing a kiss on her forehead.

Clark had no idea how the simple word had alerted her to his mood, but her eyes fluttered open and she began searching his expression in the moonlight. He looked down at his lap. It was pointless really, he knew she'd already clocked there was something up.

But he just... really didn't want to analyse anything right now.

Bracing himself for a question, he tensed, breath held.

Instead, she sat up slightly, tugging on the sleeve of his t-shirt and guiding him into position, until his head rested gently against her chest.

'It's okay, you don't have to say anything,' she whispered, stroking soft hands through his hair.

For the second time that evening, Clark felt the permission to surrender. He exhaled loudly, that pressure surging again in his chest.

She pulled him tighter, and he leaned into it, arms wrapping around her waist.

He clung to her like a liferaft in a storm. Solid. Safe.

'Shh, it's okay,' she cooed. 'I've got you.'

The words were medicine. He felt them taking effect instantly, drowsiness that had been held back by adrenaline finally sweeping through him, coaxing him closer and closer to the relief of slumber.

'Thank you,' he mumbled. 'Love you.'

'Love you too,' he heard as he drifted to sleep. 'Always.’
