Welcome to Camp Nightscape Ch8 posted. Penultimate chapter! Enjoy!

Heres a snippet:

Danny clamped his hands over his ears, but it was too late. Summer’s cry tore into his eardrums, sending blood trickling down his neck. The rest of the trio lay lifeless at her feet, bodies collapsed like puppets with severed strings.

Were they… dead?

What about the humans they’d inhabited?

Nausea swirled in Danny’s stomach at the question. He stayed frozen as Summer fell to her knees, her stolen body writhing, morphing into inhuman shapes. On all fours, fingers clutching at the ground, she convulsed, a hacking sound accentuating every jolt of movement, until a tar-like substance spilled from her mouth. Swirls of shimmering green ectoplasm mingled with the black sludge as it hit the ground in a disgusting sticky puddle. An inhuman growl tore from her throat as she collapsed beside her fallen comrades.

The night fell silent. All Danny could hear was his own thundering heartbeat.

Jon.

Where the hell was Jon?

It only took a second of frantic searching to find a pair of legs poking out from under ruined scraps of tent canvas. Danny crawled over to his side, throwing the tattered fabric out of the way, scanning his friend's unconscious form.

Was he…?

No…

Jon's chest gently rose and fell. He was breathing. He was still alive. Danny scanned the aftermath around them. The rest of the camp remained hypnotized at the edge of the hilltop, gazes fixed on the meteor storm above.

Why hadn’t the machine’s hold over them broken yet?

As though it had been waiting for his silent question, the machine behind him groaned. Its green light brightened, illuminating Jon’s pale face, making him look sickly. A crackling sound set the hairs on the back of Danny’s neck on end. He twisted his head around to find the source.

The ring that had been at the centre of the machine floated in mid air, shaking, electricity sparking around it. Danny watched transfixed as a stream of blue-green light suddenly gushed from the machine, sending a shimmering wave out over the crowd of mindless campers.

The light settled over them, sinking into each person like a soul returning to its rightful body. And with it, some awareness began to return to their expressions. Each person’s gaze drew slowly back down to their surroundings, looking to one another for answers to questions they’d only just remembered to ask.

Butterflies of hope fluttered in Danny’s chest.

Had they really done it?

Was it… over?

He stared at the trio's abandoned bodies, biting his lip as he waited for some sign of movement.

It was never this easy.

Chapter 7 of Welcome to Camp Nightscape is up!

Snippet:

Danny’s head hung low, chin bobbing against his chest. Beads of sweat gathered on his forehead, matting his snow white hair to his skin. 

He wasn’t sure how, but the machine was keeping him in ghost form. He felt so weak he was sure he’d have reverted to his human half otherwise. With his arms pinned to his sides, his muscles ached against the strain of his fixed position. The magnetic field around him barely allowed him to turn his head an inch either way, let alone force his body free from its grip. 

He was utterly helpless. 

Pathetic. 

He’d tried to go it alone, and this was the outcome? Danny's eyes filled with frustrated tears that he couldn't even wipe away. They fell freely as the reality of how stupid he’d been set in. He’d had someone right there, literally begging to help… and he’d been too stubborn - no, too scared - to take it. 

A few hours earlier, keeping Jon out of harm's way had seemed like the most important thing in the world. His only guard against the guilt of failing to protect someone. 

Guilt... 

That was it wasn't it? 

The thing he was really afraid of. He'd seen how it had destroyed his other self. The choices another Danny had made to be free of regret. Seeing that, knowing what he could be capable of... it had made him desperate to avoid any situation that might push him to do the same. 

But he’d been fighting a losing battle. Some part of him had known that, even if he couldn't admit it to himself. Guilt wasn't something amyone could outrun forever.

And he felt its presence constantly.

From the moment he’d stepped inside his parent's machine and activated that portal, guilt had nestled it's way inside him. He'd given all the ghosts in the ghost zone an open door into Amity Park. Anything they did, it was all on him, right? 

Except he was just a kid… 

Just a clueless high schooler trying to be a one man army. 

Of course he couldn’t handle all of this stuff completely alone!

Hell, even Superman needed help sometimes, didn’t he? Danny wondered how Clark Kent did it. How he managed the responsibility and worry that came with the job. It can’t be easy for him either - especially having Lois ‘dangles herself over the jaws of death’ Lane as a wife. 

But Clark hadn't pushed people away, had he? He'd dared to still have a life. Friends. Wife.

Even kids. 

Maybe he was even stronger for it. 

Danny felt a sob rising in his throat as a thought hit him with cruel clarity.

He’d gotten this all so very wrong.

That other Danny, the one who'd been so desperate he'd gone to Vlad... it wasn't guilt that lead him there. 

It was loneliness. 

Danny let out a cry of frustration at his own blindness. Everything he'd been doing to prevent that future from becoming his was doing the exact opposite. He'd sidelined his friends, pushed Jon away and now an entire camp full of kids were about to live the rest of their lives as wonderless zombies. 

The green glow of the machine began to brighten.

Danny's head lifted as high as he could manage. He watched as the dormant parts of the machine began rumbling to life, responding to some unseen change in the atmosphere. The air around him crackled and buzzed, blue flickers of light shooting across the machine's surface. 

The meteor storm. 

It must be starting. 

No, no, no...

Danny flooded with panic as the status field around him started to vibrate. He had to do something. Come on, anything! A chill ran through him he felt something tugging at his ghost core, drawing in his ghostly energy like a vacuum and funnelling it into the machine. 

His struggles were futile, leaving him too weak to hold his head up after only a few seconds of frantic movement,  

Surrender caused his body to fall limp.

This was happening.

There was nothing he could do to stop it. 

All he could do was pray Jonathan Kent hadn’t listened to a word he’d said.

Lois and Clark | Superman & Lois 4x10

Chapter 6 of Welcome to Camp Nightscape is up! Jon's git some digging to do in the computer lab, while Danny takes some of his pent up frustration out on a big hunk of metal.

Snippet:

Volunteer camp counselors scattered along the hilltop, setting up viewing equipment, chairs, blankets. They moved unnaturally, in unison. Like ants controlled by a hive mind.

Even so, they seemed more excited than usual. Guess the pending meteor storm was a big enough deal that even the trio’s hypnotic spell couldn’t completely erase their enthusiasm. If what Jon had told Danny was true, it was going to be a spectacular sight. Something you only get the chance to see once in a lifetime.

And that was exactly why they’d chosen it. What better time to capture the essence of wonder, than during a huge astronomical event?

Wonder…

What would happen to these kids without it?

What even was it? Wonder wasn’t a feeling he’d given that much thought. Actually, Danny wasn't exactly the deepest thinker in general. But his brush with Dan had forced him to reflect a bit more. The things he’d seen had left his idea of himself shaken. In that world, he had been so messed up after losing his loved ones, he’d gone to Vlad for help. Begged him to extract his ghost self.

Had he known what would happen?

Had he even cared?

The unanswered questions Danny now carried promoted a lot more soul searching. If he was going to avoid that future, he had to do more than just keep everyone alive. He needed to figure out what was important to him. What made his life worth living? What could he turn to for strength if something awful did happen to him?

So here he was, trying to protect a bunch of kids from losing their sense of wonder. And now that he was forced to think about it, he realised the feeling was connected to lots of things.

Awe. Admiration. Curiosity.

The motivation to ask questions and seek answers. To marvel at the unexpected. The ability to feel moved by something.

Or someone.

Maybe it was more important than people thought…

Decided to go for a double helping this weekend - Chapter 5 of Welcome to Camp Nightscape is up! Things get a bit intense between Danny & Jon in the janitor's closet...

Snippet:

Danny's eyes flashed in warning. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Just wait a second,” Jon pleaded. “I think I have an idea how we can get some more intel.”

“We?” Danny raised an eyebrow. 

Jon sighed. “Well yeah, we’re kind of stuck with each other now, aren’t we? Don't you think we should work together on this?”

Danny didn't take his hand off the door. “No offense, but you don't know anything about ghosts or how to stop them. And I'm not going to be responsible for getting Superman's kid killed.” 

“Just give me two minutes. I swear, it'll be totally safe. We won't even leave this closet.”

Jon continued assaulting him with puppy dog eyes, drained Danny's resolve. He sighed dramatically. 

“Fine. What's your idea?”

Another little flutter activated at the bashful look on Jon's face.

Damnit! 

“Well, uh… you remember I said I felt something similar to the effects of ectoplasm when I'm around you, right?”

Danny swallowed the lump in his throat as he considered where this was going. “Um… yeah. But you said it wasn't as strong…” 

“Well, maybe that's just because we weren't, um, touching.”

“Touching?” Danny repeatedly dumbly.
