In life, I mended wounds with herbs and whispered prayers beneath breath. In death, I mend nothing at all...

If you hear a scream in the walls tonight, don’t panic. It’s probably me - or your plumbing. Either way, it’s an omen.

Maeve was watching Abaddon and Vincent play with each other through the window when she noticed some oddly dressed people getting close to the two

Maeve folded her hands together, watching quietly. There was something almost peaceful about it - the sound of laughter, the illusion of normalcy. It tugged at something deep in her chest. Something old. Something aching.

Then-

Movement.

Her eyes shifted sharply.

Across the courtyard, near the edge of the iron gate, a small group approached. They were watching. She wasn't a stranger to visitors at the hotel, but she was always curious about any new faces.

These people looked like they belonged to a cult and were up to no good. She noticed one of them was carrying a wooden stake. They were still far enough for Abaddon and Vincent not to notice them.

Maeve stilled.

The air around her sharpened, that quiet, mournful presence tightening into something far more alert.

“A stake…?” she murmured, her Irish lilt dropping low, uneasy. “Ah, now that’s not the sort o’ thing ye bring for friendly company…”

Her gaze flicked back to the boys.

Abaddon sensed something was wrong and pulled Vincent deeper into the forest while Maeve went to go tell someone who was still alive what was going on

The Hotel swallowed her in a breath.

Walls, doors, corridors—none of them slowed her. She slipped through them like wind through cracked stone, her urgency bleeding into the building itself. Lights flickered as she passed. A door down the hall creaked open on its own.

“Katherine…” Maeve called, her voice threading through the halls before her form fully followed. “Katherine, love-where are ye?”

She found her near the stairwell, midway through gathering linens, the soft rustle of fabric the only sound in the quiet corridor.

Maeve appeared just beside her- too quickly, too suddenly.

“Katherine.”

It started, as these things usually did, with flickering lights and a chill that refused to leave.

The Feelings were currently located in the lobby

Katherine was halfway through fixing the coffee machine-again-when she noticed the lobby’s chandelier swaying slightly, even though the air was still. Brn, balancing the ledger at the desk, frowned up at it.

“Please tell me that’s not another poltergeist.”

Nathan didn’t even look up. “Define poltergeist.”

“The kind that ruins the new curtains,” Esther chimed in sweetly, gliding by with her usual, unnervingly perfect smile.

Ben, of course, was the first to actually see something. He’d been wandering toward the West Wing after hearing faint singing. Not ghostly moaning, not the usual creaks and whispers—singing. Soft and old, like a lullaby his grandmother might’ve known.

Madison once again, slowly stalked the hallways of the hotel. It was a little late, 11 pm. But she couldn’t sleep. She saw that her foster parents door was open. They were talking.

“Oh hun! I just don’t know! Maddie is always so so closed off! She never wants to be on the camera either!”

Mathew said

“OH WE’LL GET TA HER HEART EVENTUALLY! SHE’LL BE A STAR IN NO TIME! OVERCOMING ADVERTISES! ITS GONNA MAKE US LOOK WONDERFUL! POLISHED!”

Jess replied

Madison was used to these conversations. They weren’t good at hiding their true intentions. It didn’t matter. Not anymore. She hates being the muse for the camera. Not after… the incident. She would rather stay behind the camera. She wants to be the artist. The person behind everything. Never in the spotlight. The girl quietly walked away like she was never there in the first place. Going back to her room and holding her stuffed raven, Circe.

At the foot of her bed stood a ghostly figure- a woman with gentle eyes and sorrowful softness to her edges, like she was made of moonlight.

Maeve.

She took a small step forward, hands folded politely as if afraid to startle the girl.

“I didn’t mean to frighten ye,” Maeve murmured. “But I could feel yer heart ache clear down the hall. Thought maybe ye shouldn’t sit in it alone.”

The lamp flickered again, steadying as Maeve’s form became a little clearer.

“May I sit?” she asked, voice patient and kind. “Only if ye want the company.”

Madison looked up at Maeve and smiled softly. It was nice to see a familiar face.

“Yes, you may sit.”

She said, gesturing next to the bed. She even scooted a bit to make some room for the ghost.

The mattress didn’t dip, of course, but the air beside Madison shifted as Maeve settled herself at the edge of the bed. Her glow dimmed to something calmer, less startling, like she was trying to match the room’s warmth.

Circe the stuffed raven rested between them, its button eyes catching just a hint of Maeve’s light.

Maeve tilted her head, studying Madison with quiet care. “Ye look exhausted, poor thing. Not the sort o’ tired sleep fixes, either.”

She kept her hands folded neatly in her lap, giving the girl space. “I heard their voices. Yer mam and dad. They speak… loudly. Even when they think they don’t.”

Maeve’s face brightened, touched by that wistful gleam that always came when someone asked about before. Her form shimmered faintly as she leaned against the wall... or rather, hovered just close enough to suggest leaning.

There were many tales. Some tragic, others horrific.

She drifted a little closer to him, her tone half-musing, half-confessional. “One I loved most was about a count in Vienna... he fell in love with a woman who resembled his long-dead wife. He’d watch her from afar, terrified that his hunger would ruin her… and of course, it did.” A wry smile tugged at her lips. “They always ended that way- beauty, ruin, and a cross at dawn.”

Vincent listen to every word. He loved stories like this but wasn’t allowed to indulge in it when he was human

She gave a small shrug, the gesture graceful despite her translucence. “Then there were the old folklore accounts- stories of peasants digging up graves to find blood at a corpse’s lips, of mothers who swore the dead came back for their children. Those tales felt real, in the way that fear always does.”

Her gaze flicked toward Vincent, curious now. “It’s strange, though to sit here and tell them to a vampire, instead of just reading them by firelight.”

My parents never let me read stories like that when I was human but I would always be able to hear them from the town folk. They were always happy to share them with me

Maeve smiled softly at that, her gaze taking on a faraway warmth. “Of course they were,” she said. “Folk tales were meant to be told aloud, after all...not hoarded between pages. Stories breathe better in the open air, passed from one voice to another.”

She drifted closer, her presence faintly stirring the air, like a cool draft brushing past him. “I imagine you sitting by a hearth somewhere… wide-eyed, listening to old fishermen or washerwomen whisper about the creatures in the woods.” Her tone gentled further. “You must’ve been such a curious child.”

A faint pause. “It’s rather funny, isn’t it? The way stories always come back around. You once listened to people tell vampire tales, and now—” she gave him a knowing smile, “—the vampire’s the one listening.”

Maeve tilted her head, her voice growing thoughtful. “Do you remember any of the ones they told you? The ones that stuck?”

Maeve listened intently. Being a ghost did get boring so anything new was welcomed in the banshee's eyes. She hadn't heard on this tale, so she gave Vincent the stage- as Nathan would call it. She was still getting used to some modern terms.

"I see, that's very interesting." Maeve had said when the tale was finished.

maeve smiled back. It wasn't often when she felt at ease or at the very least drowning in her sorrows. Most of her time was spent doing so or just avoiding people for most of the time. Not out of dislike, rather just the fact that she didn't want them to be around one of her er.. flare-ups.

Naphula came through the window, again. She always did this, every night. In her mouth, she held a deer leg, dry blood staining her mouth and hands. Blood slowly dripped onto the carpet and floor.

''God damnit, Naphula!''

Naphula hissed, before skittering into the vents to enjoy her meal. Kathrine followed after, reaching into the vent to grab the demon. Only to feel nothing, she pulled her arm out, walking away.

In the kitchen, Abaddon sat, looking at the blender he had. Watching as the different items in it slashed and were torn apart in it. ''Abaddon.'' The demon looked over, staring at Katherine. ''Can you please talk to Naphula about hunting, she got blood over the carpet...again.''

Maeve drifted into the kitchen - or rather, through the kitchen- phasing in with a faint static pop of ghostly energy. She glanced between them, then at the blender full of shredded… something.

“Oh dear… I’m sensing distress.” Maeve’s voice was gentle, like someone entering a room where a baby had just been put to sleep. “Is this about the… ah-” her eyes flicked toward the ceiling vent, where wet chewing noises echoed, “...late-night snack run?”

''My wife has her own reasonings for hunting, I choose to say nothing about it.'' Abaddon spoke, gazing at the blender still. ''That's it, no blendering, until you talk to your wife.'' Katherine spoke, unplugging the blender and picking it up.

Abaddon hissed, ''You dare take blender?!'' he got out of the chair, trying to take back the blender. Before Katherine placed the item into a cabinet, and then childproofing it.

Maeve winced sympathetically, hands clasping in front of her. “Oh, that is rather unfortunate. Bodily fluids are terribly stubborn to remove. Even for the living.” She turned in Abaddon’s direction. “Perhaps a conversation is in order?”

Abaddon huffs, crossing his arms. ''No.'' He muttered, looking away. ''Oh for-..'' Katherine's gaze turns to Maeve. ''From mom to mom, what exactly did Abaddon really like, before..the demon thing?''

''I'M STANDING RIGHT HERE!'' A angry stomp was heard from the demon, clearly being upset that he was being ignored now. ''I am a fully grown demon! Such human things will not work on me!'' He hissed, before stopping. ''Weeell, maybe if I have extra allowanc-''

''No.''

Maeve couldn’t help it. A small laugh slipped through, soft and melodic, like a music box winding open. She covered her mouth with delicate fingers, though the smile in her eyes gave her away.

She floated a bit closer, her translucent form catching faint glimmers from the kitchen lights. “If I recall,” she mused, looking thoughtfully at Katherine, “before the demon thing, he rather liked warm drinks. Sweet ones. Something about the scent calmed him down. Chocolate, wasn’t it?”

Katherine nodded, turning to Abaddon. ''We have some chocolate milk, if you talk to Naphula, you can have some of it.'' She watched as Abaddon thought, before he nods. ''Fine... I'll talk to her.''

Abaddon walked to a vent, he opened it and entered. Causing Katherine and Maeve to be alone in the kitchen. Katherine looked at Maeve, before speaking. ''Can you follow him, to make sure he actually does talk to her?''

Naphula tore at the deer flesh, ignoring fur that got into her mouth. Blood had started staining her overalls, but nevertheless, she kept digging in. She heard the sound of crawling, turning her head over. ''...Abaddon?''

“Of course,” she replied with a gentle dip of her head. “I’ll be subtle. Like a draft on a winter night.” She drifted after him, her form phasing upward through the ceiling rather than climbing into the vent like a mortal would. The metal hummed faintly as she passed through, following the echo of his muttered complaints and the wet rip of Naphula’s meal.

“Ahem. Naphula,” he began, tone attempting stern authority. “We have discussed this. The… carcasses must stay outside. Or...at the very least-not on the carpets.”
