“The Information Bureau must be a nightmare here...”

What the hell was this place? It certainly wasn’t the same living world she saw in her last trip. It was damp, dark, and... kinda reeked of fire, of something dead too. Not unlike where she worked. The buildings stretched out into something intimidating, dwarfing anyone that stepped inside their walls. 

She... may have taken a wrong turn somewhere. And there seemed to be this fear of openly strolling through the streets like she was. Oh! There was something though. A spot of red hair, dressed in robes adorned in military fashions.

“Hey. I have a couple of questions. You’ve got a moment?”

Another memory flashed before him, remembering her only piece of advice that he had received before she left the bar. Ever since hearing those words, he wanted to take them to heart. For as long as he could remember, he always was interested in the humans that had arrived and left Quindecim in the past, thus he started making his mannequins, but were those really something he treasured?

He looked down at the wooden handiwork of the counter before his visible eye shared contact with the mechanical eye patch on her face. He had no response to her question.

The silence was telling, though not so much as a lie. She had checked on him and Ginti through the years-- a natural habit that came with spending so much time with Nona. But he was young, and though the question showed that he might be starting his journey, there was still a while to go.

“We go through a lot of memories-- you and I. Whether we realize it or not, we take them in. Maybe they’ll be there tomorrow, maybe not.” Finally, she unscrewed the cap of the whiskey bottle, chugging it back with a quick swig. The burn in her throat was welcoming, and instinctively she smiled. “Whoa-- this is good stuff by the way. I don’t know why we bother drinking anything but alcohol.”

The warmth really. It was so nice. “You start judging, and good-- good arbiters can keep them all separate, but your off days, suddenly you’re wondering if maybe that was from the last judgement-- or one from the day before, or last week. And it’s all the ugly details that get stuck in there.”

She pointed to the rack behind him. “What we treasure is the thing that keeps us grounded. That was mine. Still is, really.”

Talk about a heavy question. A couple of answers came to her mind, a few lies. It’d been so easy to ignore her reasons between complaining what sort of hell the memory bureau was, but the reasons. They had never really changed. Still, she sighed and planted herself on one of the bar stools, chin perched in her hands.

“What makes you curious?” Quin began carefully, tiredness finally creeping along the edges of her frown. “I’ll give you it wasn’t easy. I had to wait quite a while before Nona liked someone enough to take over.”

Decim walked back behind the bar and observed Quin’s movements toward the bar stool. Her lazy body movement and wrinkles developing around her eye made her exhaustion quite evident. He turned around and grabbed a bottle of whiskey, imported from the living world.

“It’s no secret that the job of an arbiter is not easy. But when was that point for you when you realized it was too much for you?” He said to her while pouring her a glass on the rocks.

There wasn’t much getting around it. It was nice of him to bring the whiskey over though, like a welcome invitation home, or rest. Quin would take rest. She didn’t acknowledge it right away, instead fidgeting with her hands, stretching the fingers out. She half-expected to hear a crack in the plastic.

“Humans have this saying: life is suffering, but really, sometimes, I think we have it worse.” Quin sighed, tapping on the wood of a table that still felt a bit like hers too. Of course. It’d been in the name. In the end, they shared this place. 

“You know why I told you to have something to treasure?”

“Why did you decide to relinquish your position as an arbiter in the first place?” He asked, having always been curious as to her reasons for leaving in the first place. He recalls their first encounter, hearing her voice filled with excitement of leaving Quindecim. At that time, her reasons for her departure were unclear, unmentioned even.

“Okay, Stoneface. Nona told me.” She smiled though and allowed herself inside the old bar. It hadn’t changed much since she had last seen it… barring the weird, mannequin thing. “And you know I always liked you more than Ginti. But still… that whole memory test. Can’t really do that again, yeah?”

“You were only doing your job. It was my responsibility to recognize the situation at hand, no matter what happens.” Decim bowed respectfully to his predecessor. “I failed to be attentive to the test. I will be sure not to fail next time.”

“Ah, well, your circumstances are a little... unique right now.” She took a cursory look around, and was a little disappointed to notice the woman wasn’t present. Perhaps for the best. “You better not though. I’d hate to be given my old position back~”

“I don’t know how we do all of this some days,” Quin quipped as she watched the droplets from the ceiling idly, mouth twitching. “I mean, the gifts are nice, but I’m not sure how many days off I get that’s actually a day off.” All towards a greater goal and all that, she knew, but man.

She was tired.

“You make it sound so easy.” And maybe it should’ve been. “If Nona’s plan doesn’t work, you know we’re stuck like this for the long haul.” Then again, it was something they were used to at least. Sorta. If they had any more though.. geez, she wasn’t sure how they were going to do it.

She was a lot more... normal than she expected. It was an ignorant statement, for sure, but it was hard not to think that at first. Thousands upon thousands of looking through lives and deciding the most important connections made it difficult to see the gems in the rough.

But this girl. This girl had proven she was different. Yet, it was so easy to draw a blank on those details. She gave a smile. “Hi. We haven’t met. It’s Quin. This used to be my place.” And just as easily, let herself in. “Thought I’d check in on things. How are you adjusting?”

There was a spark there, something unique, and something rarely seen in humans. Quin had gone through so many lives, so many memories, and so many psychologies of people. And still, still, she’d find something different in someone.

Truthfully, it made her head hurt. He didn’t need to know that though, did he?  “You look like you could use a nap,” she remarked, “Or 12.”

          The area he was in did not seem familiar to the white-haired male, causing a bit of alarm to rise within him. A part of himself wanted to stay put, while the other wanted to carefully explore the new environment in hopes of finding his way back home. However, before he could even begin he had noticed someone, and they were casually talking to him. Near knew that this person may possibly be his only way back to a familiar environment. “I thank you, for your concern, but I assure you I do not need a nap or any rest at the moment. Instead I would like the location of this place, if that is possible.”

“I’m afraid it’s not,” she answered casually, not unlike a retailer dissuading a particularly difficult return. If looked at a little too long, it could seem patronizing. It was strange to see him there, but after Decim’s little games, it didn’t surprise her nearly as much as before. “Though I’ll say you’re far from home. Quite unfortunate~.”

“Ah good. I was starting to wonder if Occulus was kidnapping you now.” While the lake was certainly peaceful, or sorta, it wasn’t nearly enough to stave off the boredom that she felt. If anything, she could at least listen to Nona for a couple of hours and drink while she had the chance. 

“I only have a couple hours left, you know.”

“Knowing him, it could be possible. It’s not like it’s going happen any day anyways. All he cares is me playing pool with him.” She was stuck in a pool match earlier with Oculus, and no matter how much she had wanted to leave the room, he had kept begging her to stay. Luckily after their match of pool, she had won and managed to slip away. Today Quin had came over to share a few drinks with her and catching up on a few things.

“My apologizes if you had to wait long.”

“It’s nice to see you have the free time to humor him,” Quin remarked with a grimace. “I’m not sure anyone else could really stand to.” It was alright though, or at least, she hoped it was. Humans did have that old adage to them that made sense in some ways, but sneaking around was a little hard if the enemy was breathing down your neck, wasn’t it?

“Oh, you’ll make it up to me, I’m sure~,” she teased before leaning back on the chair. “I may have made myself comfortable in the mean time.”

Oh, wasn’t this...? Well, no, it was pretty obvious, but it was different to meet the woman in person. She carried herself well, as one with no memories could anyway, but in truth, it was so different to meet someone like that in person. She broke the system. And in that regard, Quin could really respect her for it.

She smiled. “I guess ol’ stone-face isn’t here right now, huh?” She made a good show of looking around, but made no attempt to leave. “That’s alright~. I’ve been meaning to meet you anyway.”
