i feel like people are missing the point of this whole notre dame debate: no one is saying that we shouldn’t try to fix the church or that it’s not worth fixing.

it’s just funny that there is such near-universal outrage over its destruction when churches in black neighborhoods are burned down by white supremacists in the US and that gets no coverage. centuries old churches in puerto rico were battered by the hurricane and the white house didn’t rush to help restore those.

it’s also funny that millionaires can pull together hundreds of millions of dollars in a couple of days to renovate a building meanwhile millions of people worldwide are sick, starving, and dying.

it’s worth paying attention to the selective empathy that the rich and privileged hold and whose suffering successfully prompts them to part with their wealth. because it certainly isn’t the suffering of people of color and i feel like that should at least be something we take note of amidst all this.

Red alert! The Kalahari manganese field is located on the vast planes of Northern Cape Province, South Africa and is the largest known land-based manganese deposit with estimates of over 13 billions tons of reserve. Although situated within 2.2 billion year old sedimentary rocks, it is believed later groundwaters penetrating fractures resulted in forming some of the world’s finest specimens of rhodochrosite. In the late 1970’s, shaft sinking at the N’Chwaning I mine went through a zone of numerous pockets, the largest being 0.5 x 1m in size and lined with incredible groups of stunning crystals. The mining however resulted in many specimens being damaged and pockets being worked through, with reports of hundreds of specimens being swept away from the floor of the mine! But this survivor is a ‘killer’ from that zone. An amazing ‘fan’ of deep red, gemmy intergrown ‘dog-tooth’ scalenohedral crystals, so aesthetically sitting and contrasting on black manganite matrix. Through the aforementioned mining, many specimens recovered were loose crystals and had their tips damaged through cleavage (which can be seen very slightly on a couple here) - but great pieces like this were recovered and are now so eagerly sought after. The colour is unbeatable - similar to the colour of the famous Sweet Home rhodochrosites of Colorado but an entirely different morphology. To me many of the crystals can also have an almost ‘burned’ look (a little brown component) which gives a beautiful clarity and ‘hardness’ of quality that is hard to define but easy to see. These crystals love the sun, see how they sparkle and I can only imagine what it must have been like in the mine, black, sooty and dark and suddenly your lamp catches these lining vugs - incredible! Now collected over 40 years ago and a find that is still regarded as one of the most famous pockets zones of modern times, and specimens that are ‘pilgrimages’ for collectors worldwide!
