Jareth: Hey Sarah, can you get me a drink?
Sarah: What do you want?
Jareth: Something as dark as my unforgiving soul.
Sarah: *carries in a glass of milk*
Jareth: I feel insulted.
Sarah: You should.
Hello!
I’m writing a comic paper about the new Labyrinth prequel. What do people think of it? I just want to add some tumblr opinion to my paper
YOU GUYS, TODAY IS THE DAY
That’s right! I (Mod G) got my hard copy of Labyrinth: Coronation Volume One.
And you guys. Guys. It’s gorgeous. Cold to the touch because I’m supposed to get snow tomorrow, but gorgeous.
I already read the e-copy of it on my Kindle, but this is a totally different experience. It’s HUGE. Much bigger than I thought it was going to be. The pages are nice and thick and glossy. The art is beautiful, the story compelling.
And yes, we even get a baby picture of our favorite Goblin King.
Volume One starts in the middle of Sarah’s run and so far, the story is told mostly through flashback. We get details on Jareth’s background (which I am liable to flagrantly ignore in my fics, but I digress), more details on the Goblin Kingdom, and so much characterization. I’m in love, everyone.
And the story is a bit darker than what I was expecting, which feels like a personal gift to me. It feels like the writers picked my brain over a nice cup of tea and pulled out all of the Grimm Brothers fairytale tropes I love best, threw it into a blender, and out popped this story.
That guy up there? He’s the previous Goblin King. I won’t spoil anything else about him, but hoo boy. Whatever I was thinking this story might be like after the manga fiasco, I was proven wrong. So, so, so magnificently wrong. I’m overjoyed.
And I still can’t stress enough just how gorgeous it is. I apologise for the camera phone pictures, but I am absolutely not breaking this book’s spine to scan it. I’m selfish that way.
This story genuinely feels like an extension of the film we all know and love. It has its dark moments, the same quirky humor, the same type of aesthetic. Really, get your hands on this ASAP. I’ll leave the rest of the story for you to discover on your own, but know that if at some point today you hear a high pitched squeal, that’s me.
I would, as a book nerd at heart, strongly recommend that you get a physical copy. While the e-book versions are just as beautiful, it can be difficult to see all of the tiny little details on screen. Plus, it’ll look great on your bookshelf.
the lack of attention the Labyrinth comics are getting is a shame, you are all now obligated to read them
They are so so good, they wipe the floor with the Return to the Labyrinth manga.
