I ain’t here to defend Cassie, she is a 💩 person, but Lexi has a lot of nerve calling her selfish as if this girl didn’t write a play exposing all her friends’ darkest moments and mocking her sister’s humiliating moment on the carousel. Not to mention, and I know it’s Nate, but let’s be real:
She outed a kid struggling with his sexuality despite it being NONE of her business. Nate may have been talking out his a** and is a hypocrite, but he was right. She was being homophobic.
And she did all this for attention. For “art”.
And she never apologized. She never cared about the harm. She just wanted to be acknowledged at the expense of people’s pain.
This show is all 💩-ty people, and I will only be referring to those characters in all three seasons, but they also are complex characters with trauma that led to where they are:
Cassie betrayed her friend and debases herself for fame. She is also a victim of sexual harassment by her male FAMILY members when she was barely a teen. In fact, I would argue her first encounter with Nate is also a form of sexual abuse given her mental state and intoxication. She also was abandoned by her father.
Lexi takes advantage of people’s pain for “art”. She also is a girl who was constantly used by her friend to pass drug tests, her friend never acknowledging the pain this brings Lexi and the reminder of her father’s abandonment.
Rue brings danger wherever she goes and caused great trauma to her family. She is also a mentally ill person who got addicted to substances after the loss of her father, and should have been in therapy along with being medicated to avoid this. She also has had her feelings strung along by Jules, and while she still goes by “she”, it was highly suggested that she struggled with gender identity.
Jules uses everything in her capacity to get what she wants out of people. She is also trans woman who was abandoned by her mother and is the victim of sexual abuse by older men AND was recorded in one of those moments without consent. She also fell in love with someone who might have also “loved” her but also had threatened her when he realized he was attracted to her.
Maddy falsely accused a man of assaulting her to defend the man who actually harmed her and she had in her possession a video of a teen girl being sexually abused and did nothing about it. She also is a victim of physical and sexual abuse by Nate. She has been the target of racism from Nate’s family. She also was underaged when an adult had an encounter with her, even if he might not have been aware of her age.
Nate is a violent misogynistic toxic male who has physically and sexually abused others. He is also a teen boy struggling with his sexuality, deeply traumatized by the sexual abuse his father inflicted on others, was mentally abused by his father. He is also mentally unstable and should have been taken to therapy well into his childhood.
These people are terrible people, and yes, there is a scale to how terrible they are. Nate is the worst, and I don’t think nothing could happen to rectify what he has done.
I won’t deny that, but for people to act like some are innocent icons and the others are the epitome of evil without trauma? Yes it’s a little frustrating.
