12:00PSU farmers marketBeing away from Ali (my girlfriend) for so long has been hard. I bought these wonderful flowers at the market and gave them to two girls sitting in the sun and asked, "would you be willing to accept these flowers on behalf of my girlfriend, since I can't give them to her myself?" They gladly accepted my gift and told me I have a lucky girlfriend. I'm glad I could brighten their day and let Ali know that I'm thinking of her.

10:00 - 17:00PortlandHad a fantastic day here in Portland on this sunny day. Rode the MAX to Pioneer square. After stopping to admire the sun, I bussed to SE Portland to enjoy some wonderful tea and a walk in Laurelhurt park with my friend Nethaniel.After bussing back downtown I explored the waterfront and went to Voodoo donuts followed by Stumptown coffee, both of which were supremely satisfying.So its official, I really like Portland, its pretty awesome. If you ever get the chance to be injured here, take it. Oh, or not be injured, that's good too.

20:00Sue's house in BeavertonTook a trip to Powell's books and picked up Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Seems fitting for my current life situation. The neighborhood cat has been stopping by for attention every evening. So fluffy and cuddly :-)

Having ridden my knee into near oblivion, the real challenge of my journey begins. How to recover gracefully from an injury while mid trip.
I am focusing all my efforts now on a full recovery.Nothing too serious, but Quadriceps tendonitis is still a clear sign from my body that its time to take a break, and thatâs exactly what Iâm doing. This gives me time to slow down, walk, bus, and light rail around Portland, and is a chance to practice some humility and to trust in others.
Lucky for me there are lots of wonderful people here who have all been very generous and are making it possible for me to keep up my hopes that this will still turn out to be a fantastic adventure, even if (and its the worst case) its not all from the seat of my bike.This injury is a chance for me to really adapt and make the most of my situation. Thanks to everyone who is supporting me through this difficult time.

There was a lot of yard waste to dispose of so we had a grand 5 hour long bonfire I took a picture of the coals before we put it out. My phones camera didnât really know how to handle it. Burning things is so fun :-) We even did some fire spinning with our fire poking stick.

Ridgefield Wa.
First mechanical issue
So partway up Green Mountain, I heard some noise coming from my drivetrain. I stop to examine it more closely and see that one of the links in my chain has pulled apart and is hanging on by only one plate. I was amazed that I was able to go about 20 miles on that link.
I decided to go as far as the chain would take me. About 50 feet later, it snapped. I was maybe 20 minutes from Chrisâ house too! So close!

Green Mountain/Lane road
This evil looking spike really threw me through a loop today. The hill was massive, more of a small mountain. I donât know how I made it up the whole thing with my sore knee and 35 miles of riding already in.
Partway up I started hearing some strange drive train noises, but the problem was not immediately obvious and I was too determined to get up the beast of a hill to stick around fiddling with things.
Once I made it to the top, I was rewarded with this amazing view and some late lunch. One of the most rewarding parts of my trip so far. Not to mention the amazing ride down the other side! But what was that noise?

just South of Kelso Wa.
So when I set out this morning I was not in good spirits. I was worried about the distance to Ridgefield and my knee was really feeling the miles.
After cruising down into Castle rock, I managed to pull myself together and get focused on the day ahead. I kept a steady pace and took lots of breaks, and in the end I rode 56 miles. I ended the day feeling good. Almost all the way to my destination, Ridgefield Wa.

The tunnel under 504 connecting the campground and the Mt.Saint Helens visitor center which I didnât really visit since I spent all my cash on the campsite and firewood.

Not only is the name awesome, its a nice room. Here is a before and after. Nice place to dry my gear out, recoup and its a short walk to the grocery store. Living in the lap of luxury :-)
