Sebastian smiled at her and once he was done talking he started to slowly walk again, it was a good thing that they didn’t live very far away because he was looking forward to laying down, closing his eyes and ending this day. He wanted to promise her that he would give this place a change, that he would find something that made him happy or at least less miserable, but he wasn’t sure that he would be able to do that, at least not yet. “I can’t promise you that. Not yet.” He said, knowing it wasn’t what his sister wanted to hear. “But I promise that if I had enough of this place, we will find a new arrangement.” There was a time he didn’t thought he would ever leave his mother side, one of the reasons he was able to leave with Maree was that he knew his mother would be safe with her father, that he wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her, a lot of things could happen in the future, Maree could find someone else to protect her, someone that would love and care for her, and she wouldn’t need him anymore, would be asking too much if she fell in love with mermaid and wanted to return home with him? Probably. Regardless, he just wanted to put her mind at ease, that if he had enough he would tell her that he wanted to leave and not hate her for making his stay, after all she wasn’t forcing him to do something he didn’t want, as long as she was safe, he was happy.
Maree managed a brittle smile back, still feeling very emotional about all of this. Taking a deep breath, she fell back into step with him, trying to take some deep breaths and let go of the negative emotions clinging to her. She had been so incredibly excited from the moment their parents agreed that she could go, to the moment they actually got here. And she was still excited, though she had to admit she was a bit scared too. What if this place didn’t end up being everything she dreamed it could be? What if she couldn’t find what she was looking for? Glancing over at Sebastian, she furrowed her eyebrows at his response, not entirely sure why he couldn’t give her that promise. Yet she didn’t push further. Unlike most people, if he spoke he meant what he said, and he would never lie to her. She nodded a bit. “Okay, that sounds fair.” she agreed, her tone still low and soft from crying. As long as that change didn’t force her back home, she would do her best to cope with it gracefully. Of course this was probably just going to be one of many talks they would have to get trough, considering how overprotective he was being at the moment. He was probably hoping that if she did, after much struggle, find someone to love here it would be one of their own kind. Someone who would urge her back into the sea. Which she couldn’t even imagining happening. All her life she had dreamed of seeing and exploring the surface, and now she was finally here. Not even love was going to urge her backwards. “So you know this isn’t going to be the first time I want to go to a bar or a club at night, right? Is that gonna keep being a problem?” She asked, figuring she might as well gauge how difficult he was planning on making it given she was very eager to socialize like humans did.
mermaidxpriya:
Priya immediately caught the scent of one of her own- and then a moment later even realized she recognized said scent personally, which made her relax even more. She turned to look over at the girl, giving her a smile in greeting. “It’s Majesty now, remember?” She chided softly- even though she was still smiling and clearly just teasing her. Priya had never been one to be too formal when alone- but just the same, now up on land, she didn’t want people thinking less of merfolk or questioning her stature amongst her people.
As the waves continued lapping along her tail Priya turned back towards the sea, patting the spot in the sand beside of her in an invitation for Maree to join her. “Quite well actually, given he so readily agreed to allowing us our own land on the island, a safe place for us to not only live but potentially new birthing grounds, safe from hunters.” Which had been the ultimate goal after all, given their dwindling numbers across the globe. “How’ve you been settling in?”
Maree had been able to tell that it was her queen the moment she stepped onto the beach. Though she had found that her sense of smell was different on land the longer she stayed here. As someone who had never been to the surface, all the impressions of being here were entirely new to her. Smiling warmly back, she chuckled a little at the teasing remark. “Why indeed it is. My apologies your Majesty.” she said, teasing back yet adding a small bow of her head to signal the respect her regent deserved. She’d always really liked the royal family. Whenever they got together with her family they had the best of time.
Noticing the spot in the sand Priya patted, Maree took a seat next to her, tentatively stretching her legs out. The moment the water touched her feet, her tail took their place, the scales shimmering in the sun. “That’s a great! We can finally consider making a permanent settlement on land. I’d love to stay.” she said with excitement in her tone. She really wanted to be able to make a life here, though she wasn’t entirely sure yet if the queen had stipulations for those willing to. “Fairly well! My brother came with me and we both got jobs in the same venue, The Dragon. He’s a little on edge being here but I think he’ll settle in in a little while.”
sebastian-blackstorm:
Sebastian chuckled at her words, only because the idea of him ever being able to hate her was very funny to him, when he looked at her and saw that she was almost crying, he immediately regretted his laugh, and pulled her closer to him into a hug, Sebastian didn’t hug people very often, not even his sister or mother so this was a very special occasion, he wanted to make sure she was okay, and he hated that she was almost crying because of him, he already tried to explain to her once, but it seemed like she was stuck with that idea, which was a quality that Sebastian had. Stop walking, he looked at her. “When you were born, I was pretty sure you were going to hate me at some point.” He had never told that before, since it was a feeling he once had but realized he was wrong, so there was no need to bring it up, until now. “You were always smiling and running around, bringing me pretty rocks you found, and speaking none stop.” He smiled it, he was pretty sure at that time if he was a person that spoke at a lot, he still wouldn’t manage to get more than a few words between her endless talks. “I thought if I didn’t change, you would start to think that I hated you, and eventually you would hate me for being so close off.” Sebastian didn’t know how to show her how much she meant to him, except that until this day, he still had all those little gifts she brought for him. “One day you hurt your knees. It wasn’t anything serious, but the first thing you did was call my name.” His voice, as always, was quiet, a low whisper, if someone was walking by, no one would be able to hear. “That was when I realized I didn’t need to change, being around was enough for you to realized how much I loved you. That it didn’t matter what happened, big or small, you could always call my name and I would run to you.” He told her, he doubted she would remember since she was only 5 when that happened. “Being here is my way of saying how much I love you, and that love can never turn into hate, okay.” He reassured her.
Hearing him chuckle, ever so softly, Maree knew that it was a genuine reaction, finding her words absurd or funny given how close the two of them were. Yet it felt like she couldn’t get this weight off her chest, no matter how hard she tried or how many times she replayed the conversations they’d had before leaving. Being pulled close startled her, though at the moment it was exactly what she needed, so she also leaned into him and hugged him back. He rarely initiated hugs, which told her it was important to him to make sure she was okay. Though she also couldn’t help but let her tears fell as she clinged tightly to him. Looking back at him, her eyes widened at hearing he’d been scared she would hate him. How could she ever? Not only had he always been incredibly attentive and sweet with her, but unlike other brothers she’d met and knew of from her friends, he never seemed to mind having her around. Which was a big deal when you were a younger sibling, because it was impossible not to idolize your older one. You wanted to be just like them, and Maree was certain she had been no exception when she was younger. She had to bite her lip not to interrupt him, which was very hard for her as she’d never been the greatest listener. Though when he spoke this much all at once, she knew to hold her tongue and wait until he was done. Mostly because she wanted him to know that she would always listen when he took the time to open up to her. While she wanted to argue with some of it, still not entirely able to get over the fact that he was putting her first in every way, and giving up so very much by doing so, Maree depleted somewhat where she stood. If she argued, then she would be telling him that there was something wrong with the way he was choosing to show and nurture how much he loved her. And she really couldn’t do that. “Okay.. I don’t know how to not feel incredibly guilty and selfish but it means the world to me that you came with. Just.. please promise me that you’ll give this place a chance? I need you to find some happiness for yourself Sebastian. Please?” She couldn’t help but plead a little.
sebastian-blackstorm:
Sebastian was truly jealous about his sister, how easy going she was with everyone, how she just walked in a place and made friends, how she saw the world with light and curiosity, if he ever had that way of seeing things, he lost a long time ago, part of why he was so protective of her was that he didn’t want her to change, he didn’t want her to see the bad and the ugly the world had to offer. “I don’t trust anyone.” He corrected her, it wasn’t about just humans, he didn’t trust the vampires, the witches, or anyone else, he didn’t know what happened to his father, so the blame wasn’t only on the humans, he was going to say that the Queen was stupid for revealing herself, but he didn’t think it would be a good idea to say those words out loud, he might not agree with her, but he still respected the hierarchy. “I would.” he said, he would never lie to her, it wasn’t a secret that he was miserable on the island and that he would never be here if it wasn’t for her. “But I would never forgive myself if something happened to you. So you stay, so will I.” It was just that simple, the second she said she wanted to go home, he would leave everything behind and run with her before she had a second to think and change her mind.
While so wildly different, Maree still made an effort to understand her brother. His views, his personality, his choices. She supposed that she could to a degree understand why he was, and always had been incredibly protective. His father had died going to the surface just to check on something and here she was going to actually live out of the water. And while their kind knew lots about the surface, few of them had actually gone to experience it. So nothing was certain and little was verified. “Right..” she amended, pursing her lips a little as she couldn’t exactly agree with it but she could at the very least respect it. He saw danger everywhere, whereas she saw opportunities and new adventures. At least he didn’t outright tell her he disagreed with their reigning monarch. To do so would be far too reckless for him anyway. Like it had before when they’d talked, or rather she had yelled and he had talked about him coming with her, her heart twisted at the honest admission. Despite having voiced her opinion and truly pleaded with him to stay behind, and heard how he saw it and how he insisted he would be unhappy at home while she was here, Maree still felt terrible about this. Her eyes becoming blank with unshed tears as she tried to swallow the huge lump in her throat. What if he ended up resenting her? Not in a month or four, but two or eight years.. when they were still here and he’d put so much of his life on hold for her, not to mention lived in a place he truly wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for her. “I love you for it.. but you’re going to end up hating my guts for keeping you here..” she murmured, despair lacing in her tone. She knew he was hoping she would change her mind after a bit of time here. Agree to come back home where she was safe.. but in her mind, limited. She wanted her life to be more, bigger, exhilarating, unlike their parents lives..

Maree had hoped she could somehow convince him to just back off a little. Then again she understood that it might be too much for her to ask for considering they had just arrived and he had no trust in the surface dwellers what so ever. It made her wonder just how much longer this overprotective bullshit would last, and what she could do to put a rush on the entire process. For a moment, it seemed like he might be listening to her. And then came that arced brow, a sure sign that he had decided she was done. Maree truly loved her older brother. They might technically be half siblings, but she has never felt like they were any less family because of it. But it was dawning on her that her biggest challenge here would be to convince her brother, or have to run off at every turn to gain that freedom she was longing for. With a loud huff and some leg stomping she went trough the door and outside into the night air. Though once there she turned. “You’re being an overbearing ass! I’m not a kid Sebastian! You don’t get to order me around here.” If he continued to give her the silent treatment she would do the exact opposite.
.
Sebastian was glad that she went out without further discussion, while he was a man of few words, Maree spoke enough for both of them, sometimes even for the entire family, he knew it was her nature, so he just stayed quiet and listened, he never told her not to speak her mind or shut up knowing that it would probably hurt her feelings. He smiled at her and messed with her hair, knowing that she didn’t exactly like when he did that, but he has been doing that for all her life, and he wasn’t going to change now. “If you think this place is safe, then you’re a naive kid.” He answered, he felt a little more comfortable talking now that they were alone walking home.
Once outside Maree had to take a few steadying breaths, trying to calm herself down as the frustration still bubbles inside of her. She’d always been fairly emotional and when you were the youngest child everyone was overbearing with, yet doted on it was hard to accept being told no. Even as an adult well aware that you couldn’t get everything you wanted. Her family had always been protective though. Her lack of impulse control made them worry and look out for her, and would probably not change despite her age. Feeling that familiar hand in her hair, she shifted her gaze to her brother, biting back a sigh. It was hard to be mad at him for long with how gentle and caring he was. One of a million reasons for her to love him. And she really did. But it was so painfully clear that they were polar opposites. Falling into step with him, she tried to remind herself of why he was the way he was. Sebastian had lost someone he loved to the humans. She hadn’t. So while she might not entirely agree with his statement, she couldn’t outright argue either. “The Queen believes it’s safe for us to be here. She’s revealed our existence to the vampire king. I get that you don’t trust humans but they are in the minority here.” She said, her tone softer, using her free arm to playfully push his shoulder a little. No longer arguing, but opening up for a discussion. “Don’t you think you’d be happier at home?”
Maree had barely been at the bar an hour when she caught sight of her tower of a brother walking towards her, looking none too pleased. Rolling her eyes in his direction, she pretended as if she hadn’t seen him and kept chatting with the guy she was with, until her name was called that was, and the guy took one look at Sebastian before fleeing with his tail between his legs like a scared guppy. Exhaling deeply, the mermaid reluctantly turned to face mr tall and grumpy where he stood. “Let me guess, you have a tracker on me?” she asked, a certain level of venom in her tone, letting him know she did not appreciate being hunted down nor approved of whatever method he had in place to tail her. “I’ll spare you the air, dear brother. One, I’m not leaving and two, I’m not apologizing for having to sneak out the window like some teen. Because we both know you’d have found a million reasons why I should have stayed home instead.” She quirked a brow at him, curious to see if he would bother to challenge her, yet also knowing that if he decided she was coming back to the house with him, there was little she would be able to do about it. “Please I just want to have some fun Seb. I’m not in any danger here.” She backtracked, just a little.

Sebastian knew the second he appeared, his sister would know that he had ways of following her around, however he didn’t care, even if she finds out, it didn’t mean he was going to stop. When he saw her, he stopped by the door hoping that she would excuse herself and come talk to him, of course that was expecting too much of his little sister, even angrier he called her out, with a small pleasing smile on his face when the boy she was talking to ran away. He let her speak her mind, he knew that maybe he was being a little over the top, but when she said there wasn’t any danger, she lost any advantage she might have in this conversation. Sebastian raised his eyebrow at her, opened the door and waited for her to leave first.

Priya had spoken to King Octavian days before the attack, fully ready to have an announcement about her kind made. But then hunters, humans jostled the peace that had surrounded the island, and she didn’t exactly think it was the best time for it all to come to light. But things were settling a bit again, the resilience of the people here admittedly a bit inspiring, so Priya chose now to come clean and reveal just who (and what) they were.
Which is why she felt okay now to sit on the shoreline, trying not to feel nervous as she let her tail shift, her iridescent scales glinting under the bright sun. “There’s no need to stare.” She called out as she felt someone walking nearby.
@paradisusstart
You’ll miss your home. You’ll miss your parents. You will miss the sea. All the admonishments of her friends, her parents, her brother, her neighbours even, insisting that even if she was going to join their queen on land there was no way she would stay there. Maree used it as fuel though, for her own will power and the knowledge that she was dying to prove them all wrong. No one wanted the existence of her people more known than her. Because if they could truly venture up on land, then she would be able to choose for herself. And she would choose freedom, every, single, time.
She had barely been on land a few hours, walking about, trying to ignore Sebastian as he trailed her like a too tall and too sour shadow. It was not that she didn’t love her brother, but she knew the only reason he was here was to make sure she didn’t get hurt or mess things up. While she was here hoping to start a new life. Still, to placate him she had suggested they check out the beach. By no means had she thought their queen would be there. All but skipping over to Priyah, Maree smiled brightly at her. “Your highness!” she exclaimed, unable not to sound a bit teasing given how friendly their families always had been with one another. “So the pearl is out of the shell, huh? How did the vampire monarch take it?”

Roy hated to admit that this bar was his favorite to frequent. There was something about watching everyone (and everything) mingle with one another. Once and a while, he would be a bystander through whatever unnecessary mess one supernatural had with another. Sometimes they acted as if their old age had yet to truly catch up with modernity, and Roy would continue to smoke his cigarettes and eye them with a sharp interest that a child with an insect might have.
He didn’t really care for these creatures. Not that he thought other humans might. What genuine interest would he have in fairytale creatures, especially ones that could end his life at any given moment? He wouldn’t even see it coming.
He lifted another cigarette to his lips and lit it, face veiled briefly in rolling tendrils as he exhaled his first breath. After another inhale, he glanced down briefly to tip the ash into the tray, and across from him, the pleather booth seat squeaked as someone slid into it. “Yes, you may sit with me,” Roy drawled. He looked up toward his new company. “Did you want something?”
Her eyes shone with excitement from the moment she stepped into the bar, scanning every single person as they stepped into view as she herself slowly moved forward. Land dwellers in general were just... incredibly fascinating to her. She had never once seen one before, yet since arriving this morning she had seen quite a bit. They were all oblivious to her though. With two human legs of her own, she blended in perfectly. Though Maree certainly hadn't tried to blend in clothing wise. Her shorts were very short and her crop top had no arms. If her brother caught her in this get up he would have a heart attack before ushering her home.
Which was the main reason she had slipped out without telling him. He could yell at her later if he felt like it. Right now she was here to explore and get more familiar with human customs. Buying what the humans called 'drinks' she sipped the glass with a satisfied expression. Everyone was either in pairs or at the bar counter though, so she spotted a male sitting by himself and walked over there, brazenly sliding into his booth. "Why thank you." she said in her naturally husky, sing song voice. The mermaid smiled at him as she set her glass down. "Just company, unless you mind it too much?"
