Bill Gates openly admits that he’s not self-made and speaks quite vocally about how his family gave him every advantage they could.

Jeff Bezos is self-made; claiming he started Amazon from $300k from his parents and friends is just outright misleading. That’s like saying you made $6m after 35~ years, but you weren’t self-made because your parents/friends gave you $30.

Warren Buffet is also self-made; he didn’t even become a billionaire until after he was 60. Everything I’ve read on his biography even alludes to the fact the he started working in his youth.

Elon Musk is also self-made; his father’s involvement in his life is rather questionable, but even if we took that into account he would still be self-made as his father’s emerald mine is but only a small fraction of his current net worth.

Point is, you can always argue that someone had some “advantage”, but at the end of the day to determine if someone is self-made is ask this...

If most people were given the exact same “advantages”, then would they be equally if not more successful? The answer for all of them (including Bill Gates) is probably not.
