cato's father is a harsh, abusive man. he beat it into his son that the games are a privilege, a chance to make their district proud. being a victor means everything. a few days before their games, after training— when cato is changing his clothes, clove gets a glimpse of some old scars on his back. she has questions.
one of them joins the rebels, and they have to fight on opposite sides. but when it really comes down to it... they choose each other.
cato and clove have always been best friends— their friendship genuine and strong, a rarity in their district when everyone has a 'fend for yourself, be the best' kind of mentality. but when cato gets reaped and then later returns a victor, clove fears some things might have changed between them. that maybe all this new attention cato's getting is pushing her away from him.
they've been rivals all their lives. for as long as clove can remember, her and cato have competed for the first place— at school, at trainings, at stupid dares their teenage minds have come up with... but the day before the reaping, when they're both supposed to volunteer, he has some confessions to get out of his chest.
cato used to have an older brother that mysteriously disappeared one day. he never really knew what happened to him, and everytime he tried asking one of their parents, they got this angered, disgusted expression on their faces. one day, he gets a crypted message to meet in the woods.... and it might be his only chance to get answers. (it could be that his brother is one of the very few rebels from cato's district or something else, that's up to you.)
