Interviewer introduction to the artist’s practice (prep them with 150 words)
Can you tell us about your latest project? The Donut Sub-Collection explores a series of public artworks from London's largest free-to-visit public art collection located in Canary Wharf. The project aims to challenge the “public” quality of privately owned public art through a satirical guided art tour of The Donut Sub-Collection – a fictitious art collection re-imagining 6 public artworks in Canary Wharf as donut installations.
Where is it situated? The project is based in Canary Wharf, London's core financial capital located in its Docklands on the Eastern edge of the city. With a long history of redevelopment populated by high-rise offices and newly built residential suites, the site was privatised in the late 1980s and is now characterised by its added level of of security and strict photography regulations on site. This contested public and private nature of Canary Wharf made it an interesting site to explore its public art collection, and perhaps to unearth the authenticity behind the public-ness of these privately owned artworks.
How does it connect with themes you’ve addressed before? My practice has always revolved around developing systems grounded in play and humour to intervene into the powers that hold precedence over individual lives and autonomy. The individual as a vibrant and emotional being is often forgotten against the rhythm and politics of living in fast paced societies, and I find that The Donut Sub-collection connects to my practice by re-inserting the public into public art and public spaces through emotional methods of making and writing that encourage the expression of the individual.
