Teresa with the painting :)
Figuring out how to use the space. I really like the two flowers together, but it’s also really cute when they are across the room from each other and one peeks out from behind the t wall near the door. It also allows a bit more floor space and room around the paintings on the walls around.
We decided against having the hand facing the door where you enter because it was almost too aggressive and a bit gross. I like that it now points in the direction you’d follow through the exhibition, like a big arrow.
I am concerned about the cord leading to it though. I like the idea of it running along the floor. Like a bull culbert! But I have a feeling that will be a no go health and safety wise. Which means either taping it down, or moving it closer to the wall....
At the moment the polar bear is closer to the back of the room. I like that (with the sheet on too) it has a storage kind of vibe. Although I do worry that you aren’t meant to put sculpture near a wall? Would be better to have more space to walk around it....
Again, there is the issue of sharing the space with two painters and not wanting to be too disruptive (a hard ask with such garish work tbh) just part of the nature of the show though... not really any other options
Definitely better without bandage.
The original had a bandage cover thing on the joint but it wasn’t working on this one. Made it creepier.
Has been interesting trying to decide when to match the originals and When to make my own choices about the looks.
I feel like as long as they could be compared to the original it’s okay, I like that they’ve become my versions and that my capabilities/ways of doing things have shaped the changes. A kind of reverse engineering.
Made the second flower in a different colour way.. I like that they’re the same but not the same. Only thing was the brown seed-like colour I chose was hard to pair with another colour for the face. Too dark for black like the other but white just looked weird or unfinished. Ended up going with a weird blue. Kinda love it.
Tried making this bandage cover to cover up the joint of the finger (like on the original) but I think it actually just makes it creepier & exaggerates the over extension of the finger.
I think it will be better without..
I wanted to try and fix the over extension but it’s actually a really big job to get inside the hand to adjust the lever and patch it up again
Also like Eugene said, it’s alright that it’s fucking weird cause it’s fucking weird
artist statement for web & submission
The publication from the shining,
We wrote the introduction as a group and a small text each.
Mine was called Psychologically powerful mind control methods revealed. See second sheet.
Didn’t post any of the stuff from The Shining!
Anna, Max, Lucy & I for the exhibition paper.
Really fun installing outside of the studio spaces & seeing the work with other peoples.
The space for Exposure is much tighter and I have twice as much work, a little anxious about taking up so much space around other people’s nice paintings, but there also isn’t really any room to change things around... No one has enough space.
I’m planning to show both flowers, the hand and the polar bear with a cover on. For me it feels like that makes the most sense, I like that the flowers balance out the Christmas-ness of the hand and the polar bear and I like that the sweetness of the bear & flowers balances out the creepiness of the big hand. Together they have some kind of interesting mass & I like that it kind of makes sense but is also... confusing and unspecific
I don’t really like the idea of showing the hand without the polar bear or without the flowers... and I’ve shown the polar bear & flower before so I don’t really want to take away the hand. But if I have to edit it down for the space it might have to be that way...
