Sep: For my Think And Die Thinking Playlist, I talked about all these songs and why they’re special to me and why I was excited to see these bands/artists at the fest. I’m gonna recreate that here:
I don’t know this person at all, but got to see them play at Cafe Strich which was the pre-show for the fest. This is the song I put on a mixtape for a really important person to me that I’m going through hard times with, I’ve listened to it on repeat this past month and when I played it on air, DJ Aglossa and I recalled the times we used to get drunk in my room until 4am crying to music like this together.
Bean is one of the most amazing people that I know. They are incredibly compassionate and smart and loving and responsible, and are one of the main organizers of the fest and of course they had to be included in this playlist.
Run Around The Block - Remambran
Mallory has the most beautiful voice ever, and I’ve been listening to her music projects for years now, always blown away by how emotive and touching she is in her musical capabilities.
Nicole and Mander are also main organizers of the fest, though I don’t know them as well but I always am really happy to see them. This song is a dream as far as twee goes and it always is a song I include on mixes for crushes.
Salt Flat reunited for the fest, it was super fucking hard not to cry throughout their whole set. It’s amazing how it seemed like everyone in the crowd knew all the lyrics to their songs.
Quaaludes is a bay area band that a lot of people are really stoked about. I first got to see them when I booked them for Scream Queens fest 3 years ago. I’ve come to be acquaintances on the path to friends with the members, and really appreciated the things they said in between songs during the fest.
Paper Fantasies - Composite
Composite is a fairly new Oakland band, they were super fun to watch and I remember when I first heard their demo I was like “omg I wish i had this when I was teen.” I hope they take it as a compliment when I say they remind me of a post-punk Tsunami Bomb.
Greg Harvester from this band is putting out SBSM’s new tape on Remote Outposts. I refer to Greg as our Godfather now. Michelle also helped us put our tape art together, which was so amazing of her. Silent Era’s new tape fucking rules and is the best thing to listen to when being in my bedroom doing the sad girl trying to come out and be a capable girl again thing.
Jaime is the best drummer I’ve ever seen, and one of the kindest people I know and I secretly think she’s a goddess. Daisy World is brutally amazing in what they do and Monica had dedicated this song to me at last year’s TADT because I told her that I thought the lyrics were about Elin Nordegrin (i don’t know how to spell her name sorry).
Before the fest I told Maria that she should talk about her songs more and that people really appreciate it when she does despite how awkward she gets about it. She went into detail about her military family and the effects of colonial marriages and things like that. For me as an Iranian immigrant child the repeated lyrics: “tired of the way they get your name wrong” always hits me in a hard way. This song is on their new album that’s about to come out very soon.
Land Of Nod - Permanent Ruin
PermRu is one of the few hardcore bands I truly love. Their members are also some of the organizers of the fest, which is really amazing work for such a memorable thing. At a show we played with them a long time ago I was crying and went up to Miriam and told her how great it was to see someone of Iranian heritage fronting a band like this.
At the fest when we played this song, there’s a part where I scream into the distortion mic— I’ve never screamed harder ever in my life, I almost forgot my cue for the next part of the song because it felt like I couldn’t control it. It felt like visceral rage, in a joyful way, which is cool cause our tape is called Joy/Rage so it really put things together for me. I got to talk about the flier i made about trans girl safety/shitty cis men before our last song.
Make My Bed Again - Softdrink
On air last week I talked about how Hana was the first person in my life to tell me that my experiences with sexual assault were not my fault, I wrote about it in my new zine how that perspective really changed shit for me for the better. I used to play in a band with her and it’s so awesome to see how well she’s doing making solo stuff now (not that she wasn’t before, but now she’s performing). “I thought after the first two songs the terror would go away, but it hasn’t”– best quote from her TADT set. I love the weird face you make too.
I Need A Mirror - Wizard Apprentice
At TADT Tieraney said that she’s been trying to write “responsible love songs” and in my head I was like “you always have” but it was nice to hear her say her intentions anyway. Tieraney has been making me cry with her empath magic powers since we first interviewed her on Scream Queens in 2012.
Sister - The Bedroom Witch
My sister wrote this song about me, it’s a little hard for me to take in because it’s about (from what I gather) how I get lost in these patterns of dating men who exploit my love and take my efforts in trying to be a good lover for granted. It’s also about how she feels like all these things she sees wrong with me are things she goes through as well. It’s some t-girl sister love shit basically.
