WHO KNEW THE WHOLE ‘THINGS WILL GET BETTER’ BULLSHIT WASN’T ACTUALLY BULLSHIT ???

5 years from now Kate McBride is 20 years old and happy, finally happy. Moving out of her parents out and getting out of Evanston was the best thing to ever happen to her, and nobody can say or do anything to convince her otherwise. Graduating top of her class in high school or when she got early acceptance in her dream school can’t even top it.

She attends Stanford where she studies Biology (even though her parents always get on her for turning down Yale, one of the many schools she was accepted into). Adjusting to living on campus and moving away from home was a struggle at first. She had to make all new friends and figure out what to do with her newfound freedom (word of advice from future Kate is: time management is very important... and always keep $20 on you... just in case). But she’s done pretty well for herself. She finds that college isn’t that much different from high school really. But less people care about being popular and more so care about pursuing their ideal careers and partying, which is nice for Kate.

She’s not as uptight and awkward as she was in high school. Though the stress level is still there with all the papers she has to write and books she has to read, plus waking up to go to class on time the day after a party is a struggle, but it’s a different kind of stress than what she felt during her teenage years. Kate no longer feels the pressure to try and please everyone and make someone else proud. She honestly couldn’t give less of a fuck about what people think about her, most importantly her parents (oh yeah, Kate actually curses in 5 years from now... I know, that’s obviously the most surprising part). She’s not a try hard anymore. She does whatever makes her happy and finds comfort in surrounding herself with intellectuals who aspire to do the same.

5 years from now Kate McBride is 20 years old, happy, and liberated. Also single, but she’ll blame distance on that one. Though she does have weekly skype sessions with a certain cutie from her high school years.

He recognized the girl as the one who’d been putting up science posters not too long ago. Couldn’t remember her name, though. Not that she was boring or forgettable– he recalled her fine, even considered her cute with awesome hair, but sometimes names could slip his mind. Nic bent to his knee to try and help gather all the papers he’d caused her to drop, thinking she was always carrying a bunch of stuff. “Oh don’t worry about it,” he brushed off her question, handing over papers, “it was an accident at practice. Or maybe it wasn’t. Never can tell these days.” He was mostly joking though.

She was distracted momentarily by his minor injury but snapped out of it as he started collecting papers. Shaking her head some, she started collecting the fallen pages as well. It seemed like he was always catching her in her few moments of struggling. And she was sorta thankful for it. At least someone was willing to help her out. “Thank you,” she spoke softly as she took the papers from his hands. “Oh, what sport do you play?” Kate asked curiously. She hadn’t really see him as a jock, but then again she didn’t really know him at all.

“How you’d spend your dream summer.” She shrugged. “I think the deadline is the end of next month. You get a cash prize and your essay published in the paper, it’s all very exciting.”

She laughed a little at the prompt. “Sounds simple enough. And like the sort of accolades to add to spice up a resume,” she was partially joking, “If I win that is. I’ll certainly give it a shot. I’m assuming you’ve already started brainstorming ‘your dream summer’?”

gwendolyn:

          Gwendolyn always had trouble in Ms. Sommers Geometry class and when the girl mentioned her name the girl instantly sighed as she took the piece of paper from Kate’s hand, reading it to herself as she nodded her head. “I’ve always struggled in her class, she must want me to go in for tutoring or something. I probably didn’t do too well on the last test.” She mumbles quietly before looking back at the girl, “Thank you for letting me know, I’ll probably go see her after school. Geometry is my worst subject.”

Kate shifted her weight from foot to foot as she listened intently to Gwendolyn as she spoke. “If you need the little extra help, I’d be happy to tutor you,” she offered. Something that she did often to anyone in need. “I tutor a few other kids who are in your same predicament, so I don’t mind in the slightest. And I’m rather good at Geometry,” she added, not meaning to brag or anything. But the girl did take all advanced classes and maintained an A average in all of them.

danny:

“They don’t know that.” Danny shrugged, with a laugh. Listening to her words, Danny looked down at the pavement as he walked, observing the cracks. He didn’t really want to explain his carefree attitude to her but he had a feeling he was going to anyway. “It’s not like my dad could give a shit about me anymore. I remind him too much of…” He stopped. He couldn’t say the words. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, he just couldn’t. She wasn’t his mum anymore. She’d abandoned him. Mum’s don’t do that. “Baseball.” He nodded slwly in reply to her question. “I’ve been hanging out with Raf a lot. He’s cool.”

Kate wasn’t dumb. Far from it. One glance over at Danny’s demeanor as he paused in his sentence could tell her that he was avoiding something. And she could only assume what. She didn’t know everything about the Fitzroy family, but she could put two and two together from what she saw during their meetings. “He’s your dad, Danny... He still cares about you. Maybe he just has a funny way of showing it,” she tried to be reassuring. Kate nodded, of course, Baseball. Furrowing her brows a bit, she turned to question him. “Rafael? The senior?” The one who went to jail? She thought, but kept it to herself.

“I- Pfft- What? I, uh, you’re tall... You big giant,” she tried but obviously struggled with calling him a name.

“Stop panicking McBride, I sorted it out. I left a note on the desk upstairs. It said something like we were just going to pick some books up from Eli. They’ll never know we’re gone.” Danny turned to her, with a smile. “And if they do find out, blame it on me. It’s not like I care anyway.” He shrugged, leaded them down the road. The silence lingered for a second before he turned back to her, his hands in his pockets. “So what have you been up to?” Small talk probably wasn’t the best idea right now.

Kate scoffed. “As if he would have spare books to lend us, Elias can hardly keep up with his own studies.” She laughed at the idea but quickly cut it out, clearing her throat. “I’m not going to let you take all the blame... That wouldn’t be fair. Besides I don’t see how you can just not care...” she muttered. She could only wish to be as carefree. Maybe some of his attitude would rub off on her. What was even more awkward than the silence was the small talk, something she had never really been good at. “Oh well, you know me. All I do is school work, things that look good on a college application, more school work, and occasionally try to find time to try and fit in... What about you?”

gwendolyn:

           Gwendolyn might have over reacted a bit when she heard the girl say her name, but it was because no one really took the time to come talk to her. She shakes her head in mortification before letting her attention fall back onto the class work she needed to finish before her study hall was up. “I’m sorry– probably got a little t-to excited for a moment.” She states shyly before glancing back at her momentarily. “Is there something you need help with?”

The obvious embarrassment radiating off the other girl instantly made Kate feel terrible. She thought that maybe she should’ve just kept quiet and let the girl- Gwendolyn, her name was Gwendolyn and she knew that- believe whatever she’d like. But too late for that. “No no, it’s okay. Um, sorry, I just- Ms. Sommers, the math teacher, told me to deliver this to you. I believe she wants you to head to her classroom. I’m afraid I don’t know if that means she wants see you immediately or whenever you’re free but, uh, yeah...”

“You can try, maybe if you ask nicely enough I’ll consider it, fun sized.”

“Um... Would you ever so kindly please refrain from calling me names that pick fun at my height?”

Danny looked the girl over, there were no obvious injuries. “Maybe next time we just use the door.” He laughed, shaking his head. “Let’s go.” He grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the sight of the house.

“Even better,” she chuckled. Fumbling a bit as he dragged her away, Kate regained her composure and fell in step beside him. “Okay so we got out, easy peasy lemon squeezey. Hopefully they won’t notice that we’re not upstairs doing homework... But what if they do? What if they decide to check on us? What if my mom and dad decide to go home early and they call for me and I’m not there?” She knew it was unlikely, considering there had been nights were their respective legal guardians just talked and talked for hours on end. But all the worst scenarios were running through her head and she was sort of looking to Danny to be the man with all the answers. Because for once she didn’t have them.

kalli:

“Maybe, but….” Kalli took a second to gather her thoughts, knowing that it was all very ridiculous, but at the same time very necessary. If anyone would understand that, she was sure that Kate would. “I can chew it all. I can. It’s just stressful right now probably because I didn’t have to do any of this during the summer, and now all of a sudden, all at once….” she trailed off before continuing. “I just need to get into a rhythm… soon, hopefully. And think about how good this’ll look for universities, too,” part of Kalli wondered whether she was trying to convince Kate or herself more.

As she took the other girl’s words into consideration, Kate gave her a once over. Something just felt very off about the whole situation. But maybe it was all just hitting too close to home for Kate and she didn’t like it. She almost cringed when she heard ‘how good this’ll look for universities’. It was something her parents used to tell her all the time. As if that was an excuse to add all the extra pressure. “I just hate to see you looking so... drained. For lack of a better word,” she admitted. Putting her palms on the table and clearing her throat, Kate looked Kalli in the eyes. “I also want to make sure you’re doing all this stuff for you, y’know? And that you’re happy despite being ‘quadruple booked’.” Because if she wasn’t, then she’d be going down the same road at Kate. And Kate couldn’t stand to see that happen.

“You do know that if you don’t go in there with a popular or a plastic you’re dead meat right?”  Tanya asked slowly not knowing if she knew or not.  She started up the engine to the car but started her way over to the cafe without another question anyways.

Kate nodded her head as she fiddled with her fingers. “Yes, I am very aware of that fact.” Normally she wouldn’t even think about setting foot in the pretentious cafe. “But I may have gotten on good terms with a popular... So I think I’ll be good.” For someone who kept to herself and was terrified of Plastics, Kate did talk to quite a few popular kids. Not in a super friendly fashion (minus her best friend who just so happened to get swept up in that crowd). But enough for them to know her name and not hate her, which was good enough for her,
