HE'S ONLY JUST PULLED HIMSELF INTO A SITTING POSITION - blood dripping from his temple. What had been a safe house - was now apparently on somebody's radar. SEVERAL UNCONSCIOUS BODIES ARE STREWN ACROSS THE CARPET & Bucky is amazed he'd managed to show some form of restraint , all things considered. He hears Sharon's footsteps before he sees her and he braces himself with both arms , trying to stand.

"Y'know...i'm beginning to think a vacation was a really bad idea."

she has to practically skitter to a stop in order to avoid knocking into him; brakes put on only once she sees he’s making the effort to pull himself up into a position that’s a little more vertical. her mind’s still in the middle of processing what it is that’s just taken place ---- a back and forth between needing to figure out the how and the who. ( and while they might have been on vacation, it’s a good thing that no one had relayed that knowledge to their instincts ---- or the mess that covers the floor could’ve been even worse. )

“looks like someone chose to ignore our out of office memo,” she says with a distracted expression and a huff as fingers immediately reach out for the side of his head once she’s dropped herself on the floor beside him. “you alright? i didn’t see you for a few minutes there.”

the banter comes easy enough, even with sharon's breath hot on his face, smelling of mint and salt and blood. his eyelashes flutter closed when she gets especially close to him. the click of his eyelids shutting reminds him of the fact that he hasn't slept in over twenty-four hours, too pumped up on adrenaline and black coffee and the energy drink he'd forced himself to chug in one go. all of that had bled out of him rapidly, leaving him wrung out, hollowed, distant. a different type of tired, the kind of tired that has him half-drunk with it, cold in a way that only sleep can remedy.

"you know how good i am at sneaking," he says dryly, though his mind does admittedly meander off-course at the mere idea of it, hypothetical as all of this is.

frank offers without thinking of it, "used to sneak my wife into the barracks. never did the sneaking myself."

dark eyes open to meet hers when his septum crunches back into place, the feeling somehow more grotesque than the sound. it helps that he can't feel it, given the amount of nerve damage that's blossomed in the area, spreading like cancer--but it's human nature, he supposes, to be jarred by it. unnatural.

he sniffs harshly when it's done, left with only a residual soreness that courses through the cartilage of his crooked nose.

"practice," frank parrots, chin tipping upward obediently. the astringent stings his sinuses more than his cuts when she begins to clean him off, but he allows her the diligence he wouldn't afford himself. "i uh, i used to think that. but i think some of us have it in us. we have to."

he doesn't specify what that it is. he suspects she knows.

"but you don't know your way around a hand cannon like that without practice."

it’s a nice little reprieve, isn’t it? talking in obvious hypotheticals about having to be stealthy for something low - stakes for once ; necessity stemming from something paltry and petty instead of the usual life or death ( or at the least, avoiding ending up doing this at the end of it all ). still, even in this little never - to - be - situation, frank goes and tosses some authenticity in, and she clicks her tongue quietly in return. “i know how good you are,” an eyebrow piques as she continues to gently fuss with his nose, “but where’s the fun for me in just waiting for you sneak on inside while i raid the hotel room’s minibar?” maybe one of these days he’ll get his chance.

she pauses, giving him time to blink away the too - familiar sting that comes with bones getting pushed back into place. “i’ve always been a good shot,” in her youth maybe she’d bragged about it a bit more; been keen on knocking some of her academy classmates’ egos down a notch or two at the shooting range ( and making a few bucks under the administration’s nose at the same time for her trouble ) to prove herself. but as she got older she’d preferred to let her abilities speak for themselves, even if it meant running the risk of falling under the radar by not being the loudest in the room. “the practice helps.” frank seeing on the fly and without her having to line up a row of empty beer cans certainly feels like a compliment that she’s going to take.

“ 'some of us' ... so like me an' you?” she switches out the soiled square of gauze for a clean one, fingers still resting gently on his chin to keep him within arm’s reach. it’s not the first time she’s acknowledged just how alike the two of them can be, but it’s the first time she’s said it out loud. close quarters and familiarity have made it easier to see, but not necessarily to verbalize. “bet i can make a few guesses as to what that 'it' is.”

‘you’ve got some fucking teeth,’ he says sitting there beside her, and she gives him a grin in return that’s more than worthy of the observation. ( if he wants teeth, she’ll give him teeth ----- even if the frame has a crack in it; the pinch of pulling skin as her lip protests what she’s doing ultimately getting ignored. )

she’s well aware of the fact her actions are going to get her in some hot water with her father once word makes it’s way back to him ( and he’s got enough eyes and ears out in hell’s kitchen to make sure her extracurriculars tonight will get home before her no matter how fast frank drives them ), but her father's the one that taught her not to take shit when it’s tossed in her direction in the first place. as far as she’s concerned, some ruby red scratches and a solid crack of her knuckles against someone’s jaw feels warranted.

“maybe not, but you can’t say he didn’t have it comin’. ” the grin lingers as she turns to glance out the window before returning to attention to frank, eyes still bright considering the hour. chalk it up to the adrenaline that hasn’t left her just yet ( and her knuckles will be the first to tell her when it does ). “and i didn’t, did i?” a split lip and some scabs on her hand the next morning aren’t worth a second look, really. “we both know if i hadn’t, you would’ve fucked him up worse from the jump.”

now she's usually the instigator when it comes to seeking out affection like this; big blue eyes and a substantial pout serving as her tried and true co - conspirators. but when he's the one looking to get this close, she's learned pretty quickly not to take it for granted. 

she doesn't even say a word ( rare, she knows --- but she doesn't want how enamored she is by it to somehow spook him into changing his mind ), letting him settle himself into the crook of her neck with only a delighted little hum to offer up. fingers are quick to weave themselves into his hair just behind his ear before they gently draw little lines towards the back of his head only to repeat the process.

"missed you."

the bathroom's still thick with steam as she secures her towel around her before moving on to wrapping her damp hair up into a knot at the crown of her head, unaware that alex has even come into the room until she feels the familiar tickle of stubble over her skin before his lips settle against her shoulder.

"aren't you sneaky ---" despite the warmth of the shower still clinging heavily to her skin he's gone and given her goosebumps; and while her shoulders might attempt to curl themselves in on the both of them ( an automatic response, of course; she's not about to tell him to stop even if it tickles ), her hand coming up to rest on the side of his face wants to keep him right where he is.

"y'know, ten minutes earlier you could've joined me in that shower."
