I’m thinking about the post I saw on Twitter jokingly comparing 2B to Jerry Seinfeld as “the not-so-interesting main character” of the three Automata protagonists. I get that she’s not as emotive as 9S or A2 about her struggles (except she is, it just relies more on her expressions than her monologues and requires basic inferring), but literally her entire shtick is her inability to pretend at being the perfect emotionless android soldier who doesn’t need any interpersonal connections or curiosity or empathy, yet she is so clearly incapable of not forming a connection with 9S (despite having to do it again and again) of not caring, of not crying when she thinks she lost him, of thinking about the mission and not being distracted by her worry of his well-being, of not getting angry when he is hurt. What was ending A about if not the culmination the change in character, what purpose did the callback to the starting sequence serve if not to highlight her change. She cares so fucking much she walks to the bridge and trusts A2 rather than endangering 9S. She is the catalyst of 9S’s descent and spiraling and of A2′s quiet hope and her chance at redemption. She is the glue that sticks them together (however unwillingly) because she is the one who broke the vicious cycle of unquestionable and feigned ignorance and dared making a selfish choice she wasn’t ordered to do.

I don’t think the actions and choices of any of the three - 2B, 9S and A2 - should be ignored or be taken too lightly in the face of the grander narrative. It just seems ridiculous to me 2B’s less explicit storytelling and “stoicism” somehow makes her the least interesting.
