He unthinkingly wrapped an arm around her waist, Allura didn’t say anything about it. Instead, he thought that she almost seemed to lean further into him. 

His eyesight drew up as Coran made a dramatic gesture with his hands, “Okay! Everyone smile!” He shouted, counting down from three. 

Lance didn’t know what spurred him to look at Keith during the countdown. Maybe it was induced by a slight curiosity if the other would wear his signature grimace that always stained his tired features, or if he'd smile. But once Coran hit one; Lance found himself still staring at Keith, who now was wearing a hesitant but warm smile, the expression lifted one side of his lips into an uneven grin with the slightest white of his teeth flashing in the photo. 

Lance didn’t even notice he squeezed Allura tighter in response, either.

but anyways it’s an alternate universe where lance is pining, he is struggling through unrequited feelings for Allura. he's in a space program and recruited to save all of mankind by being a test subject for this new medicine that would make it capable for longer space exploration.

he has a gene which makes it more likely to succeed within him.

while keith is a struggling drop-out, with shiro as his figurative brother figure he's recruited by Allura on the same space mission. it's just that his survival isn't as guaranteed as Lances, his gene makes him incompatible with the medicine. But they need to test possible formulas on him to see if he could survive returning to Earth.

brief summary: Lance, Hunk and Pidge are sent on a mission by the Altean Space Program, with Shiro as their leader, to possibly save all of man-kind. The only issue is that they are the first test subjects for a new medicine, meaning the risk of survival is not guaranteed. Especially for Keith who was expelled from the Altean program.
