Every Friday I wake up wanting to hate Tony Baddingham and then the writers go and make me root for him again 😭
Tony and Maud’s piano scene? Beautiful. Actual development, vulnerability, him telling her she’s even more beautiful now than before, and the camera thing was sexy and genuinely well-built. And the worst part is Maud somehow tricks me into believing Tony is capable of redemption for approximately five minutes every time she’s on screen with him. Then Monica appears and I immediately remember: oh right, he’s still a complete bastard.
Declan and Cameron? The only genuinely good dialogue was the marriage conversation, which was lifted straight from the book. Everything else feels rushed and messy. Are we really supposed to believe a handful of longing looks counts as relationship development? They go from fighting to sleeping together because… Mike mentioned it a few times? And right after that conversation about Patrick? Oh okay. Sure. Totally natural progression there.
And when exactly did Cameron become nice and protective of Shelley? Is this the same Cameron from season 1 who screamed at everyone in Corinium to bring her coffee, treated Daysee like she was useless, and snapped at Taggie during dinner when Rupert was the one at fault? LOL
Cameron and Declan: lots of horny staring, zero actual development, and Declan honestly comes across as a massive traitor to Rupert right now. Unfortunately chemistry and development are not the same thing, despite what this season seems determined to prove.
Tony and Maud though… maybe he really is falling in love with her? Am I just being manipulated by David Tennant at this point? I’m still going to enjoy watching him furious and heartbroken when she eventually ends the affair and goes back to Declan.
Also, the tape situation? Why on earth are you talking about drinking when sending those tapes should’ve been your number one priority if work is supposedly your entire life, Declan? And Freddie, my beloved... why didn’t you buy the fields the second they were offered to Sharon? Why did you wait?
God, am I actually going to start hating Tony next week? Because so far it’s been surprisingly difficult…
Rewatching all the Tony bits from S2 and gosh if it wasn't for the fact that he's constantly lying to her, Tony and Monica would be such a lovely sweet couple. They clearly love each other so much

From the way Monica looks at Tony when he says he doesn't remember what happened, I wonder if she's fearing that he may have been attacked while trying to sexually assault his mistress. She knew what was going on, told him to come home. What if she fears not only that he was being physically violent but that he was being sexually violent as well? He had just been humiliated, maybe she fears he needed to feel dominant and got carried away. Or maybe she's just picking up the pieces of his hubris, knowing it was always going to fail because he could never be satisfied (he will never be satisfieddd🎶 Hamilton ref)
"no cigars" immediately has a cigar. Monica sees immediately how easily he will lie to her. The near death experience hasn't changed him at all

Tony you melodramatic villain, please leave Rupert's dogs alone. This is truly the best end to any one episode of television (ok scratch that - that's episode four) he's such a sleazy, slimy, scary man with his awful, menacing, evil smile and his threatening presence. The way he almost whispers "like all the rest" is so fucking chilling and cold. I really did think he was going to have slaughtered one of the dogs oof I was sweating (and I still worry every time)
Ep2
The lunch between Tony and Sarah is like watching a very tense tennis match: Tony is winning, challenging her to prove its his and ordering her to get an abortion but as soon as she turns around and threatens Monica with a scandal you can see the switch in his eyes, the moment he chooses to destroy her to save his own marriage. Does he care about Monica a little bit here? Her feelings? Or is it a purely selfish defense strategy to keep his betrayal under wraps? I'm not entirely convinced that it's only selfish
Tony is such an aggressive eater and I don't know why that feels so viscerally threatening (insert metaphor about tearing out the throats of his enemies like a feral dog)
The kitchen farce scene is my favourite thing in the world. I love how everyone is involved
"I mustn't leave Monica" he almost sounds sweet
Being trapped in a pantry with Tony is the most desirable and yet terrifying prospect - just tell me what you want and I'll BARKBARKBARKBARK does Tony need a puppy under his desk too because I am very available

I hate (but appreciate from a historical perspective) how Sarah has zero agency or choice in having a baby. Two powerful men are playing tug of war over whether she's having an abortion or becoming a mother (each for their own personal and professional gain) and she doesn't even have time to think it over before the decision is made for her. Tony has zero empathy, dead behind the eyes "people have babies every day you'll figure it out", offering her alcohol, taking away her job indefinitely as punishment and she didn't even get to choose to announce it. And she knows Paul won't help, he's only thinking of his public image. He gets to decide for her and he won't even help her with the life-long commitment and burden of raising a child. Two men choosing their careers over the very real life of a woman stuck in between them

I think Monica is genuinely turned on by being given a gift she always wanted (peacocks) and that being a gesture of love and her wants being listened to, I've never seen her so entirely enamoured with her husband! Oh she's so happy 🥺 and inviting her husband to the theatre as a thank you - an activity she was likely going to enjoy alone, oh she's so into him rn. He's like ew why and she negotiates with offering to get him an ice cream during intermission 😂 god he's like a child I love it sm
"well you know how I love the theatre~" I really think David nails the 80s middle aged man in that kiss and how he swings his arms back down to his sides afterwards. A lot of how he holds himself in Rivals reminds me of old classic actors who would've been in middle age in the 80s

I realize it could be a manipulation tactic but also I think he does genuinely love her - it might be both, but in this episode he's firmly on her side so I think he's just being grateful for her support
Oh fuck here we go. "You're a public toilet" is such a wild line. But this entire scene gives me life (and death) and life again. The juxtaposition between Tony being flirted with by Beattie Johnson and turning her down hard for his wife (and the theatre which he hates), and his immediate need and desire for Maud in episode 4 is wild. You can tell something switches in him and I need to dissect ep4 to find it and understand it better
THE THEATAAAH. Tony is such a whiny bitch I love him (also hello David why is the back of your head with a short haircut so hot? I wanna touch it. I feel like my mind is going dirty bc of this show specifically 👀) I love that Tony calls his wife "darling" it's so sweeeeet and sounds amazing with his rumbly voice. And then I remember he's awful but you know
I'm trying to decipher if Maud or Tony caught feelings (or lust) first. Tony dismisses her entirely but at dinner is there something? Is Tony giving her eyes? Is Maud? Or is Tony only scheming and Maud only ambitious?

The way Tony calms Maud down in the dressing room is strangely so gentle and sweet (it's business but still). He's saving his own ass and telling her what she wants to hear but also... There's something in his eyes that makes me believe him. He must truly be a psychopath

Excited by the thrill, by the victory, by the requited feelings or at least her desire to play along. taking rupert's custody of his kids away bc everyone knows he's fucked a lot of people....i think is too much. i KNOW the situation is a lot more complex than that and is largely about his irresponsibility in general and there are obviously real issues around his promiscuity (infidelity, unprotected casual sex esp during the height of aids) and the impact his reputation is having on his kids. but i still think no longer allowing him to see them at all is a step too far

charles (and charles/gerard) is breaking my heart. i'm really growing to love him this season and the actor playing him does such a beautiful, tender job
freddie/lizzie are perfection as always. the 'we can't keep doing this too many people will get hurt' thing...i get it but like. ultimately. they will be okay. you are getting hurt staying in marriages with partners who treat you badly who you are not in love with and staying away from the person you actually have a genuine, loving connection with. it's the lying/sneaking around that will cause the most hurt. you gotta bite the bullet and get it out in the open!
