A GOOD MONSTER RESOURCE
evgenia arbugaeva documents vyacheslav korotki, a meteorologist who has spent the past thirty years living alone at a remote arctic outpost on the barents sea, in a century old wooden house that became a meteorological station in 1933, where he was sent by the russian state to measure and log climatic conditions and then transmit the data via radio to moscow.Â
notes evgenia, âthe world of cities is foreign to him. he doesnât accept it. i came with the idea of a lonely hermit who ran away from the world because of some heavy drama, but it wasnât true. he doesnât get lonely at all. he kind of disappears into tundra, into the snowstorms.âÂ
i kinda wanted to take a second to talk about a general fandom problem⊠this is loosely inspired by stuff yesterday but isnât aimed at anyone; itâs more a thing to keep in mind
okay, there are two forms of, like, analysis of plot and characters (that we care about - obviously there are. lots of ways to analyze text). theyâre called watsonian and doylist analysis, and basically, watsonian analysis examines things at the in-world narrative level, while doylist analysis examines things at the authorial level.
so, for example, say that a character in something is unexpectedly 100 miles from where they were the last time we saw them, in an unreasonable timeframe. watsonian explanations for this would involve coming up with ways the character could have gotten there in time, maybe involving driving at twice the speed limit while cops trailed after them; doylist explanations would note that the character really kind of needed there for the next plot point to happen, and maybe the author just kind of forgot where the character had been before.
and, hereâs the thing:
problems of bigotry, bad representation, oversexualization, etc in a fictional universe cannot be addressed thru watsonian analysis
for a very common example of writers trying to do this, look at the amount of female characters who are skimpily dressed, where the explanation is they breath through their skin/they need a lot of skin exposed to use their powers/they need to strip to turn invisible/etc. from a watsonian point of view, sure, that all makes perfect sense! but they didnât need to be written that way. they didnât need to have that trait. whether it makes sense from an in universe point of view, it is still, from an out of universe point of view, various levels of Gross.
(i could just as easily make, say, a character with ice powers who slowly chills herself, so she needs to wear a thick parka and mittens all the time - funny how thatâs a lot less commonâŠ)
but in addition to cases where the writers themselves try to justify things in-world, itâs⊠a pretty common thing for members of a fandom to do the same.
someone points out, like, an ableist trope in something, and gets âoh maybe theyâre not really hallucinations but instead caused by the characterâs exposure to psychic phenomenaâ, or whatever. (or, in the example yesterday, a characterâs skin is bright yellow and their eyes are slits, and the yellowness is explained through being because of their unique powers.) things that arenât in the text but are plausible theories are used to respond to pointing out Problems.
i fucking love theorizing and speculation and responding to âhow does this plot hole work?â with long rambling watsonian analysis! thatâs, like, half my blog. and i get that, when you see someone stating a Problem, the instinct is to apply that same logic to it. âhow did person a get to point bâ can be explained through a wacky car chase scene and some implausible engine modifications, and you can get a lot of fun and maybe some character depth out of it, and maybe even end up creating new stuff, so surely âwhy is character b dressed like thatâ is the same!
but itâs not. even if the author had your explanation in mind, even if it makes perfect in world sense, even if everything lines up - the problem isnât on that level. âthis character is oversexualized/made of bigoted tropes/etcâ is a problem on the level of our world, and a problem at the level of the writers/creators. it canât be solved through making the story justify it.
so if you see someone pointing out a problem that ties into IRL stuff like that, try to engage on the level of real life. save in-world theorizing for other stuff.
when you got responsibilities and you just

When undocumented immigrants are detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), they are held in detention until they go to trial where the court will decide whether they can stay in the country. In some cases, the immigration judge will let them go while they await trial if they first pay a bail bond. Bail is set at a legal minimum of $1,500, but can be much higher. The bond is meant as a deposit to ensure the accused will report to their trial. If they attend all of their court appointments, they can get the money back. But many people have trouble coming up with the funds. The average bail bond issued by the San Francisco immigration courts in 2014 was $3,411 and the average cost of bond in immigration courts nationally is $6,500. Bond amounts could be as high as $80,500 on Central District of California immigration bonds, according to a 2015 study by USC law professor Emily Ryo. Donating to community bond funds can immediately âlead to freedom,â she said. Community bond funds are charities, like RAICES, that use funds to post bail and provide legal defense for detained people. This is one of the fastest ways to reunite immigrants with their family, said Pilar Weiss, project director at the National Bail Fund Network.

Hey I know this is a long post and also asking for donations (two! strikes!) but seriously, please take a minute to consider donating, since-
At least most of the time, the fund gets the bond back after posting it, so one donation can be reused multiple times. A small donation can have a much bigger cumulative effect than it might appear at first.
Some of these might ask for you to cover transaction fees or administration but if youâre concerned about efficiency, donating directly to a bond fund guarantees the funds directly help those in need of being released.
âIsnât this an artificially imposed barrier, arenât we paying off a ransom, negotiating when we shouldnât?â Sure are, unless you write off your donation so the government essentially charges itself. The Freedom for Immigrants fund qualifies for that, check with any others you donate to.
So in conclusion please kick some bucks these folksâ way if you can.

âa pretty alien scientistâ and I am guessing the majority of people who picked this book up had a very specific idea of what was meant by this phrase, given that, you know, itâs ST:TOS and all. (sheâs probably green, wearing something not entirely practical but quite flattering, and Kirk has a thing for herâŠ..)
this particular alien, however, is quite literally a spider made of glass.
but she is very pretty.
When I subvert a trope, I subvert it. :) (Yes, I wrote the back cover copy.)
(In an earlier version it was âA pretty blue-eyed alien scientistâŠâ. I have no shame whatsoever.)
