Fat privilege is being able to enjoy TV shows

Apparently non-fat people can't enjoy shows like My Mad Fat Diary because we can't understand what it's like to be fat (I mean, it's not like the whole show is a metaphor for being any kind of outcast, or anything).

Fat Privilege Is Being Able To Tell People You're On A Diet

I'm a very athletic person. I work hard to maintain my diet and exercise regimen, and this includes counting calories. But it seems like dieting is just unacceptable for a thin person these days. Every time I pass up a piece of cake or decline to go out for pizza, I'll get asked why. When I tell them I'm on a diet, it's like that's impossible for someone of my size. "What are you, trying to lose weight? Are you insecure about your body or something? You're not even fat!" I hear this stuff all the time. Yet whenever a fat person mentions they're on a diet it's fine, and people will tell them how good it is for them to try and lose weight.

Just because I'm thin doesn't mean I can't watch what I eat!

Fat privilege is being able to have clothes specifically made for your size

It is surprisingly much harder to find clothes that fit "in shape" or "thin" people than it is for larger people. I mean hell, they even have stores dedicated to the "big and tall" not the "small and short"

Fat Privilege is not being judged for going to the gym

As a fit and muscular guy whenever I mention going to gym I get accused of all sorts of things "meatheat" "roids". People assume I'm obsessed and try to drag me down and discourage me.

Whenever a fat person goes to the gym they get support and encouragement "good for you!" etc.

Fat privilege is being encouraged, not mocked, for going to gym.

Better dorms, better prices.

I recently went to college, I was so excited at first. New life, new people, a chance to get the best career in my entire life... I was pretty happy.

The dorms were really expensive, my parents had to pay a fortune! I don't know why I had to, one dorm was filled with 4 people... And of course we were ALL thin.

But some girl 3 times my size gets one all to herself because of her size and it was half off due to some type of "health" benefit. Yeah whatever, this is putrid and vile. Discrimination is no joke, thin people should not be forced to pay more and live in worse conditions due to their weight.

Fat privilege is being able to get better prices and better living conditions because they refuse to lose weight.

I just wanted to tell you, I can understand you completely. Being a trans-thin person (so slightly overweight, but I wish I was thin and I feel like being a thin person) I can fully understand what you are going through everyday. I have so many examples of being discriminated against, only because I feel like being a thin person. I hope people will hear you!

Hey. . .I just wanted to ask for advice. I have a BMI of 16.0 (I am 108 lbs, and 5 foot 9), and I'm constantly being teased by friends about how thin I am, and How I need to eat more. So much so that I sometimes cry myself to sleep. My older sister is plump, but by no means obese, and was once as wiry and bony as I am. Yet, she still teases me too. I have Celiac Disease, which prevents me from getting my vitamins to gain weight, and I've tried to explain this to my friends many times. What do?

Alright, I'm giving serious advice, because this is a serious question.

Honestly, I'm not sure there's a way to get them to stop teasing other than to tell them, and tell them seriously, that it really bothers you and they need to knock it off. And if that doesn't work, they're assholes. If you're angry with them because they won't stop, the tell them and leave. Either they won't care and they weren't really your friends, or they'll get the idea and knock it off.

Fat Privilege is not having to walk anywhere

When I was young I was (and still am) a very slender and weedy person. My parents took me to an amusement park and we had to walk such long distances from one ride to the next that after the third ride my legs were aching, my feet were throbbing in pain and I could barely stand, let alone walk.

That's when I noticed a group of larger individuals sitting and relaxing rather comfortably in wheelchairs with amusement park attendants at the ready to push them around wherever they pleased (one even happened to be on one of those motor-powered scooters) and I was so captivated and enthralled. What a genius idea! You don't have to walk a single step, your legs and feet are never in excruciating pain and you can go wherever you want.

So being the curious child I was, I walked up to a far larger boy, who seemed to be about my age, and was part of the wheelchair group id spotted (who happened to be enjoying a vanilla ice-cream at the time. How great is that? No fear of your ice-cream accidentally toppling while you walk somewhere as well as somewhere to rest your arms while you sit there comfortably). I asked him where I might be able to get one marvelous devices.

He told me that he and his family had requested them from the attendants waiting at the entrance of the amusement park but that I wouldn't ever be able to get one because I'm not big enough.

My little heart shattered as he continued: "You're just not fat enough. They'll never give you a wheelchair to sit in. Only fat people like me get wheelchairs and not thin kids like you."

I felt so hurt and discriminated against that I just stood there, paralyzed by shock... I'm too thin, I'm not fat enough for a wheelchair, I have to walk... the words cut like knives and I couldn't help but feel that he saw me as less of a person than himself... as a minuscule scrap of a person who wasn't allowed a wheelchair.

Still stunned by this utter level of discrimination, I could do nothing but stare as his entire family got out of their wheelchairs (and the one person off their scooter) and on to a ride ahead of my own family...

The pain of the discrimination I felt that day still haunts me to this day

could you talk about how in Victorian England, fat people were considered beautiful? as a thin person i feel that it is extremely offensive that this people were dismissed as underfed peasants!

How do you feel when fat people make remarks about you "oppressing" them or when they tell you to "check your thin privilege"?

I'm disgusted. Do they not know how easy they have it?

I hate it when I got shopping for new jeans, being tall and skinny I need a 30-34, but I can never find a 30-34, I'm lucky if I can find a 32-34, and when I can it's usually in the ugliest styles. How come it's so hard to find a size for me, but the 46-32s are readily available? Just because I'm skinny I can't find pants that fit me. Fat privilege is finding pants that fit and look good.

I definitely feel you. All my life people would bring up how little I weigh, and tease me. I'd love to know how you get through each and every night, knowing that each morning just meant more taunting by "healthy" people.

Have you ever been asked to step off a ride at a theme park due to how thin & small you are?

Yes! The viking ships at state fairs? I've been asked to get off because they're worried I might fall out.

I myself am not fat nor thin, I'm pretty bulked. My mother however, is extremely thin. When she was a teeager she ate massive amounts of food and was overweight and decided to turn that around. She started eating healthy foods and exercising, this improved her metabolism drastically. So drastically in fact, now it's too fast and she's one of those that can eat as much as she wants and still remain skinny. Because she's so thin and has such a fast metabolism, she's very frail and delicate causing her too have less body heat which is detremental to her health when we have winter (we live in Canada)

So I support this blog, my mother did not choose to be thin, she didn't choose to feel the harsh winters 10 fold.

Fat privilege is having body heat to protect you in the winter.

I will do what every activist does for the cause they are so dedicated for.I will blog about it on the internet and yell at people who disagree with me, but never actually do anything about it. Ever.

Fat Privilege is getting to be done

I hate eating at my fiance's parents house because even if I pile my plate higher than the rest of theirs an consume it quicker I am badgered to constantly get more just because I'm just half their weight. I can and do eat, but to constantly push me to eat more while everyone else gets to relax and watch TV just because of being small is discrimination! Fat privilege is being accepted and understood by what will soon be MY family
