Left Chicago this afternoon with a diploma in my carry-on.
'Patriarchal Attitudes - The Case For Women In Revolt', Eva Figes, Fawcett, Greenwich, Connecticut, 1970.
Today's purchase.
53rd-57th Street Beaches, 1954, Chicago. Mildred Meade.
University of Chicago Digital Archives
Two weekends left on the lakeshore.
Make a space.
Judy Chicago fireworks April 26 to celebrate the day after [edit: before] I turn in my dissertation.
A Loverâs Discourse: Fragments (Barthes, Roland)
Codependent No More (Beattie, Melody)
The Ethical Slut: A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities (Easton, Dossie)
Time Binds: Queer Temporalities, Queer Histories (Freeman, Elizabeth)
All About Love: New Visions (hooks, bell)
This is so good, mostly because it validates my decision to not write today and drown in the love situation instead (also because I am a creeper, and isnât that sort of what v-day is anyway, creeping?)
The more things change the more things stay the same?
"I Love Dick a book, not a person, but I wasn't sure where else to report..."
I'm just waking up to get back into bed.
Reminder.
Does anyone else fucking love the group of people Beyoncé has listed as inspirational on her website?
Does Beyonce love Sophie Calle more or less than Michael Jackson?
âŠthe women most synonymous with riot grrrl are using the archive to resituate the movement as one more deeply aligned with second wave feminist theory, continental philosophy, and avant-garde literary and art traditions than youth subculture.

give me this book now.
There have been a lot of conversations lately online about the obvious and pervasive sexism in all our culture industries, including book publishing. We tally up numbers of womenâs books reviewed and decry the lack of female reviewers; we point out the sexist ways womenâs books are marketed and sold â all those headless women, all those â[man]âs mother, sister, daughterâ titles. Itâs important and good to name the problem, but itâs more important not to stop there. The root of the issue is as simple as this fact: women, research shows, buy and read books by both women and men, while men predominantly read books by men. The solution? We think itâs to read books by women, especially women outside the literary establishment. Talk about them. Share them with your friends. Representation is important. Itâs not a solution on its own, but together with more direct action to end inequality, representation can and will change our world.

Summer Reading
Heads up, readers! Emily Books, the super cool feminist/indie e-bookstore, is offering a 20% discount on all books and subscriptions with coupon code THETOAST.
Our summer reading pics from the Emily Books list:
Barbara Browning, Iâm Trying to Reach You - Barbara Browning visited us at the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality earlier this year to chat about fiction, performance, and the strange world of academia.Â
Sarah Schulman, Empathy - Sarah Schulman attended UChicago (and was active in the campus Womenâs Union in the late 70s!) before moving back to NYC. In addition to writing, she was an early member of ACT UP and created the ACT UP Oral History Project to record the movementâs stories.Â
Ellen Willis, No More Nice Girls: Countercultural Essays - The former music critic for The Village Voice never got enough credit for her cultural criticism, touching on sex, drugs, and feminism. She might change your life.
Trying to catch up on my Emily Books over summer break.
Well, arenât you lucky to have decisions.
