There's no Loyalty in this Business
Today's conversation- Me: " So I'm looking for a new job." Friend: "Why what happened?" Me: "I was fired." Friend: "Again?" So for those that know me, they'd realize that every couple of months I'm looking for a new job. Yah, I'm at that same point yet again.
Soo what's the reason for this? Well there isn't actually one set reason, but a whole culmination of problems. Here's the short list:
There's a lot of bars! This gives ppl a lot of opportunitities to jump around and find a place they make a ton of money and has low drama.
The places you make a lot of money are already taken by ppl who know somebody, are models, or some other reason, but they're not leaving! (Would you leave if you made $500 in 8 hrs?!?!)
90% of bar managers are jaded, jealous dirtbags!! And that's the truth! If you have the chance to do something with your life, they prob won't hire you.
Sometimes a bar wants a change of scenery. Translation- Fire and Rehire!
I'm sure you can add more to that list, but those are the big ones. It's a business where ppl lie, quit, steal... Wait, that sounds like most industries ... Hmmm, it sounds like I've been completely jaded. But then that's just one negative outcome of working this biz.
The Super Bowl is a great day to work!!
Let's say strictly hypothetically that there was a football lockout that lasted for one year. In that time period I guarantee more than a quarter of bars/restaurants would be out of business. It's amazing how dependent the bar business is on this national sport. But if football as a whole is that important, imagine what its like if your state's team is doing well!! The better they play, the better it is for your business, thus the better it is for your pocket!!
If you're looking for a job definitely start latest in early August. Everyone is hiring and getting ready to weed out the weak and only hire the best. If you can get your foot in the door, stay there minimum for the entire football season. Personally I really love sportsbars, they are the most fun of all "food & beverage" options. They are not as stressful or as fast as nightclubs, but they're not as stiff as fine dining. If you work in a sportsbar this is the one day you definitely wanna work. You can almost guarantee you'll make upwards of $500 depending on where you work. Plus you get to drink for free and charge people for it! Everyone will wanna take shots with you and they'll tip you on top of it.
In NY we're always lucky, cause we essentially have three teams with the Giants, Jets and Buffalo Bills. The best for business is obviously the Giants, but they all bring in customers and will get NY'ers riled up. I'd honestly rather work the Superbowl than go out for it as a college students, cause this way I'm out already, plus I bank!

Everyone's crazy after 4am
It's an interesting thing to watch people get drunk, especially when you're relatively sober. You magically watch all of their inhibitions melt away. It's creeping up on 4am and everyone's inner Michael Jackson comes out, attractive strangers' mild (or wild) foreplay, glasses breaking, people puking, and the previously shy become rabble rousers!
This is when the bouncers are on their A-games. It was 3:45, when a very nice guy told me he would go around the corner and get a hot dog and bring it back to me. I thought this was very sweet. So it's 4:05 and I happened to look out the door and he's waving with two hot dogs in his hands. I go out and get it and give him a hug, because he obviously seemed frustrated that the bouncer wouldn't let him in. I talked to the bouncer later and he told me the guy was crazy. He said it's policy once you leave you can't enter after 4:00. This guy went off and was like, "I'm a lawyer, you can't treat me like this. I just wanna give her a #@$%ing hotdog!"
I was shocked! He was one of the sweetest guys I'd ever met, and he wasn't even a lawyer! He worked in finance! I just laughed to myself when the bouncer said, "Look, everyone's crazy after 4am!"
Great Bar song. . . Everyone seems to know it and if its late enough, you can get the whole crowd singing it!
Reason you can't outdrink the bartender
January is known for being the slow season for most businesses simply because it's right after the holidays. Most people are recuperating from extravagant amount of money they've spent and alcohol they've consumed. So what does this mean for us bartenders. . . It means we have to find some way to occupy ourselves for our 9 hr shifts til 4 am. My shift was soo dull last night for a Thursday that I resigned myself to drinking my way through it. I had most of my customers buy and take shots with me. Now while you're sitting there drinking, I actually have to be super functional running up and down the bar, making drinks, and counting money. The outcome- you're a functional alcoholic!
I remember the days when I was a cheap date- 2 drinks and I was happily buzzing. Now 5 shots of Jamo in I'm just getting started. Every now and then you'll get an ambitious person who thinks they can just cause the bartender is a 125 lb female. But really, you shouldn't. First you'll be buying all of the shots. Second you'll feel really bad if you lose and risk embarrassing yourself in front of your friends. And third, hypothetically if you did win, now you're soo trashed you'll probably blackout and not even remember beating the bartender, thus defeating the purpose.
Now its a great idea to buy the bartender drinks and get them drunk, cause in the end when they're having fun you're bound to as well!
