This Troll Does Not Exist

Trolls are generated from a LoRA model that I made myself. No cosplay or fanart was used in training, except for my own. 700 images of trolls were made by hand for this project.

The anti-AI crowd harassing Jorge Gutierrez, a well-respected animator, because he's not rabidly against AI like they are is wild to me. Obviously not all anti-AI folks are doing this, but it speaks volumes about the ones who are. They don't actually care about supporting human artists, they just want everyone to do things the same way as them.

I should never have put so many hands in the training data! I wanted to get the yellow fingernails but it didn't occur to me that I'd be going back and editing the hand morphology later, lmao. This is such a pain, I didn't even like drawing hands before AI!

Interesting stuff! It looks like trying to make the nails more like claws pushes the model to make EVERYTHING seem harsher. More age in the skin texture, a scar on her cheek... It works, actually. There are absolutely some supermodel trolls out there but Alternia is such a harsh environment that we should definitely be seeing a few more battle-worn subjects.

If you train your model on images that the previous version of that model generated why don't you end up with model collapse??

Ooo, fun question! The short answer is that model collapse is... Well, not really a myth per se, but a solved problem.

You absolutely get model collapse if you make your model spit out a thousand images and then re-train on all one thousand of them without pruning or modification. But if you're curating your outputs and/or painting over them like I am, then the problem pretty much vanishes.

@thistrolldoesnotexist i am actually really curious to see the three armed version that got spit out before you did post processing…. It would be cool to see the stuff u had to clean up! Im always interested in how wacky outputs can get

@madam-melon-meow Oooh, I usually save over my original images when I do touch-ups, but thankfully the metadata was still intact so I was able to regenerate it with the same seed!

Here is the raw output. I made this a while ago so it looks like I also changed her lipstick/eye colour (easier to change than the outfit colour I guess) and removed that floaty bit near her shoulder, whatever that was supposed to be.

Now granted, I did this one before I started using upscaling to fix detail issues! These days when I generate, I make one at 1024x1024 and one upscaled to 1280x1280 (1.25x upscale using ESRGAN_4x, then denoise at 0.4 with the same prompt/seed) and pick the best of the two.

I tried the upscale trick and it DID remove the floaty bit and change her eye/makeup colour! It also added a nice green tint to her ears. Neat!! Still have the third arm and the missing chunk of her shirt though.

I'm going to spend some time enhancing the training data to make the trolls look more alien and less like cosplays. I'm thinking more animalistic hand structures and webbed fingers for seadwellers? Any other ideas in that lieu?

It will take some time of course because it means manually painting over all my images (I must be nearing 1000+ by now) but since the queue's run out anyway, I think it could be a good refresh.

I've already got plans to broaden skintones to include a dark charcoal grey and will likely include a pitch black just for fun (although I'm still not convinced the ancestors being depicted in black was meant to be literal). Could maybe go lighter for a rainbowdrinker too, but that'll mean another training concept and I'm already pushing it lol.

(Also going to try to fix the persistent problem where horns look like they're just stuck on if their hair is pulled back lol.)
