Arraiolos in the centre of Portugal's Alentejo is famous for its stitched rugs and carpets. There are lots of rug and carpet shops along the main street where you can see women stitching in the traditional method as well as repairing antique pieces. If you want to learn more there is a carpet museum to visit too. In this region the white washed houses are painted either with a blue or ochre yellow trim, this may have been to reflect the status of the owner, or these "witch strips" were to ward off evil spirits. Travel is not all about the big sights and main attractions. ⠀ ⠀ I love the peek into other people's everyday lives, such as this washing drying on the balcony in Palma, Mallorca. ⠀ ⠀ A world away from the party resorts on the island Palma is a genteel, elegant town that is small enough to explore on foot, and well worth taking a few days to see in the winter. Tattoos are a huge part of Polynesian culture, and most Tahitians will have several or many more tattoos. ⠀ ⠀ The word tattoo is Polynesian in origin, and the legend of the god of tattoos, Tohu, tells the story of painting all the fish in the ocean in different colours and beautiful patterns. ⠀ ⠀ This man from the Marquesas Islands epitomises the pride that the Tahitians have in their beautiful tattoos. ⠀ ⠀ #EmbracedByMana @tahititourisme (at Mo'orea)
I always find it feels slightly strange to travel by chairlift, when I don't have skis on. This lift carries you from the Rhine at Boppard to the stunning views at the top of the famous bend in the river. Well worth the couple of EUR for the trip. You CAN hike up of course, but I think taking the chairlift is the sensible and of course far easier option. ⠀ ⠀ We travelled with @rivieratravel (at Boppard)
This huge world sometimes makes me feel very small. I cannot decide if the cloud topped, wild, lush green forests with their cascading waterfalls in the centre of Tahiti are more Lost or Jurassic Park. ⠀ ⠀ I'm expecting to see evidence of both the Dharma Initiative and dinosaurs. Where next?
One of the things I love about travel is the people I meet, the stories they tell and the lessons they teach. ⠀ ⠀ We met this gentlemen sitting on a bench with his friends in Arraiolos, in Portugal's Alentejo. He was initially suspicious of us and our cameras, and reluctant to talk to us. Our guide won him over and he became quite animated, and passionate about the town and let us take his photo. We asked if he had ever been to the UK - "Of course not" he laughed "I was always too busy working on the land, when could I have gone?"⠀ ⠀ Trip with @tapportugal (at Arraiolos)
It is not always the most beautiful buildings, or the most popular views which inspire me. ⠀ ⠀ I wonder who has lived behind this dilapidated door in Estremoz. What stories that the house can tell of lives lived well there. Joy and sadness, births and deaths, feast and possibly famine, sickness and health the stuff that all our everyday lives are made of. I know I am biased but I love my city so much. I adore this sympathetic blend of old and new architecture at the Saatchi Gallery in the old Duke of York Barracks. The building was designed by John Saunders (also the architect for Sandhurst) and completed in 1801. The army moved out in 2003 and the site was redeveloped with the modern offices with shops underneath. (at Saatchi Gallery)
