Nadia let out a sigh, looking at her cousin. “Yes, it’s my life, but I don’t have parents or siblings that I need approval from. I have you.” She bit down on her lip shrugging. “I’ll leave you alone, I guess.”
"Your happiness should not depend on my approval. I'm an asshole, Nads and I'm also very stubborn. So please don't expect much of me, okay?" he said, shaking his head at the realization of how harsh his words were. "Thanks."
It was hard for Connor to keep a straight face as Thomas talked, knowing that the poor kid was probably more uncomfortable with this situation than him. “Are you asking me if you’re happy?” he asked, taking a sip from the water and trying to hold a chuckle. “Listen, Thomas, I know you don’t like me and I’ll admit I’m not your biggest fan either, but we should try to get along for Nadia, don’t you think?”
"What? No, I'm not. I just said it as..." he trailed off, shaking his head. "Nevermind, the point is I am so happy for you two." He tried to not say it with sarcasm but wasn't able to succeed. Thomas rolled his eyes just like a kid would if his father was lecturing him. "Yeah, I suppose. Okay, glad we had this talk. Take care, see ya," he said, quickly getting up from the couch.
“Apparently,” she said. To be frank, Lacey didn’t interact much with Thomas, and he was a hard person to talk to. Still, Lacey was on a mission and she was going to do it because her friend needed her help. “Okay, I will, grumpy. Do you like her?” she asked. “Not in a friendly way, but in a more sentimental way.”
Thomas raised an eyebrow at her initial question, already understanding what was happening. He let out a mocking laugh before shaking his head. "Hold on, Lacey. Did she send you to ask me that as if we were in the sixth grade?" he couldn't finish the sentence before starting to chuckle. "She's my friend, Lace. I don't have time for any sentimental bullshit, alright?"
Connor nodded, taking a glass of water for himself. Of course, this had been Nadia’s idea. Connor didn’t dislike Thomas, but he would have rather avoid this conversation, but now that he was here he had no other choice. “Of course, she can be very persistent,” he chuckled before taking a sip from his glass. “Okay, so go ahead. Say what you have to say.”
Thomas really had no idea what his cousin wanted him to say to Connor and he knew he couldn't say all he was thinking. "Uh, well, I don't like you, but I suppose you make Nadia happy and that makes me happy?" he said, not really feeling what he was saying except for the part he admitted he was not a fan of him.
“More than usual, I mean,” she said, rolling her eyes. Lacey was about to speak when he asked her to cut to the chase, she thought about lying for a second but she was not a liar and he was too smart to notice. “I’m here because I want to talk about Britt and I think you know about what.”
"Is that even possible?" he asked, shaking his head. He didn't like when people couldn't get to the point, it made him feel like he was wasting his time. Not like he had a lot of things to do, but still. "I know a lot of things, Lacey but I really have no idea what you're talking about. Just ask whatever you want and then leave me alone, okay?"
“Tommy, you know I always want your opinions on things. You’re my best friend. You know every single thing about me. I want you to be happy with the situation and for me. Why can’t you be happy for me?”
"If I tell you I'm happy for you, would you stop leave me alone? It's not that I don't care, but seriously do whatever you want without needing my approval, at the end of the day it's your life." Thomas knew it was a harsh thing to say, but he was too stubborn to admit something else.
“You’re very lucky. I’m sure she feels the same way about you. Very impressive? Come on. I’m always doing something impressive.” Maybe not. All she did was work and take care of her mother. Not like any of that is impressive and certainly not for him. “Or maybe we should just work out more so that we have more stamina for work. I mean, we are now officially doctors. We are responsible for people now.”
"Always? Clearly, you and I have a different definition of the word 'impressive', but keep trying, Nelson." Thomas chuckled, shaking his head. Sometimes he could be too sarcastic and for some people, especially to his mother, it was an annoying trait of him. "Work out more? I think in order to use the word 'more' we should be already working out and clearly, we don't. Yes, responsible for people who are not me."
Connor closed the door and lead Thomas to the living room. “Uh, no, she’s working,” he said, although that was something he probably already knew. “Do you want something to drink?” Connor asked, trying to start the conversation. He really had no idea why Thomas was there, last thing he knew Thomas hated him for some reason. There was only one explanation, Nadia had sent him. “She told you we should talk, right?”
He looked around before shaking his head at his question. "Uh, no, I'm fine," he said, dryly, not even bothering in looking at him. There was no doubt that he knew Nadia to well and his question came as something good, that way they could avoid small talk. "Yes. Wouldn't do this if she hadn't asked."
“Well, let me ask you this, before you keep claiming that you aren’t hostile: If Connor were to one day ask me to marry him, how would you react?”
"Honestly? I wouldn't be thrilled, but if that's what you want then it doesn't matter how I would feel."
“She is your sister. Your parents raised her since you were a baby. Sort of jealous you have a good relationship with her. One of these days Werner, you’ll be giving me one.” They were both a bit emotionally stunted, but Britt knew that one day, she’ll get to see another side of Thomas Werner. She just had to. “I know you do. Since day one. Considering how big the servings are with this truck, I now know why I’ve gained five pounds.”
"She is, and she's the best. Yeah, I doubt it since you'd have to do something very impressive for me to give you one," he said in a cocky tone of voice. Unlike most people, Thomas loved getting compliments but sometimes he felt unable to give them even if he wanted to. "I know, I've gained five pounds too. Maybe that's a sign that we should go somewhere healthier. At least we should try to eat a salad once in a while.”
“You’re being extremely rude today,” Lacey said, realizing that breaking Thomas could be harder than she had expected. “Okay, whatever. I’ve been there already but she’s not there, that’s why I assumed she could be here.”
"Just today? You really don't know me." Thomas gave her a small wry smile. "Well, she's not here." He knew Lacey wanted something else as she was a terrible liar. "Let's cut to the chase, what do you want?"
“I know you’re honest. I did grow up with you. I know you better than most people, which is why I am not understanding this hostility. Stop trying to steal my baby!”
"Hostility? I'm not being hostile, that's just who I am all the time. Not stealing, she prefers me. That's a fact."
“It’s cute that you call her your sister. You need someone like me in your life? Oh, I would love to hear you explain that,” Britt said, knowing he probably slipped when he said that, but she couldn’t help but smirk at him. Could she love him? Probably. Would she let it be easy? No. Britt was pretty fucked up, but he now knew all about that, so maybe it would be easy. “I was thinking Mexican. Your favorite food truck is about a block away.”
"Well, she is like my sister. Don't push it, Nelson. Just take the compliment and don't ask explanations." He gave her a crooked smile. Thomas always tried to avoid being too nice to people, he wasn't rude but he rarely showed a sign of affection. "That's a great choice. You know, I love Mexican." He gave her a small smile as he started to walk.
Connor looked through the peephole, he was surprised when he saw Thomas outside. For a split second, he worried that something had happened to Nadia or someone from her family but he looked way too calmed. Connor opened the door, still trying to understand what had brought him to his house. “Thomas, what a surprise! What brings you here?” he asked. “Do you want to come in?”
"Uh, I just wanted to talk, I guess." Thomas was not a good liar, at least not in this kind of things. The last thing he wanted was to go inside as that meant the conversation would be longer and more annoying. "Sure, why not?" He accepted his offer because he had promised Nadia to be polite. “Is Nadia here?” he asked, although he knew the answer to that question.
Lacey’s jaw dropped, although Thomas was too focused on his book to notice how offended she was by that question. “I just wanted to pay a visit to a friend,” she said, her usual beaming smile playing on her lips. “Well, since you guys are like super close I thought she’d be here. Do you really have no idea where is she?”
"I didn't know we were friends," he said, shrugging before focusing on his reading again. "I wouldn't say 'super close', and it's not like I'm with her all the time, so no I have no idea where she could be. Why don't you go to her house or the hospital?"

Nadia was the only reason why Thomas had agreed to come and talk with Connor, he didn't see the point of doing this as he was sure his opinion wouldn't change. Still, he was now standing in his doorway waiting for him to open the door. On his mind, Thomas was planning to make this a short conversation and then leave to tell Nadia he had tried.
“He wasn’t polite because I did everything. He was polite because he didn’t want to use me like that. You’re mean to me. Winnie will never be yours. If Winnie ever has puppies, then you can have one of her offsprings.”
"Okay, whatever you say, Nads. I'm the most honest person you'll ever meet. Maybe not the nicest, but mean is a strong word. Winnie loves me because I give her the food she likes, and don't worry I'll let you visit her and the puppies."
