hey kids who read fic, listen up

it’s annoying to me as a Fanfic Elder that y’all don’t understand how consent works in regards to reading fanfic

last night I saw a fic that had EIGHT of my favorite tags included and a great summary BUT it also contained a tag for a topic that bothers me. I weighed the pros/cons and decided NOT to read the fic because the ONE tag I disliked was something that could trigger a panic attack if the scene went into any sort of detail - it wasn’t worth risking the eight good tags.

from the first moment I noticed the fic to the moment I decided not to read it, the entire experience was MY RESPONSIBILITY. the author tagged the fic correctly, I knew what my limits were, and I respected them.

if you find a fic with tags you don’t like, JUST DON’T READ IT 

don’t harass the author, don’t post a big whiny rant about it on Tumblr, just keep scrolling

that is your job as a reader.

I’d also add that if the “chose not to warn” tag is used, that absolutely should be weighed into whether you read the fic. If you’re not sure: don’t read it. If you think it might contain something you don’t want to read: don’t read it. If you are absolutely desperate to read it but you’re unsure? Message the author and ask, if you can, get a trusted friend to read it first, but if you cannot check it for something you absolutely do not want to read, JUST DON’T READ IT. That tag is the warning. Heed it. I routinely filter “chose not to warn” out of my search results on AO3 because I’m rarely in the mood to risk a nasty surprise. The author did their part, that’s me doing mine.

At the end of the day, you don’t have some ineffable right to have all fanfic catered to your taste. Sometimes the fic just isn’t for you, and that’s okay! “But I want-” Sometimes it’s not for you. “But what if-” Don’t read it. “But-” Not. All. Fanfic. Is. For. You. Curate your own experience.

(And yeah absolutely sometimes authors are arseholes or include content without realising they wrote something unfortunate, or just don’t warn appropriately, but this isn’t that. This isn’t “the author wrote something racist/homophobic/in some other way bigoted and you were upset by it,” which is completely understandable.

This is the part where the author told you what to expect; your job is to take note of what you were told and read, or not, accordingly.)

Also, if you’re on AO3, you absolutely can put tags you don’t want into the “Exclude Tags,” area. You’re not gonna offend anyone if you do.

Hell, as both a fanfic writer and a fanfic reader, I will NOT be offended if you see a tag in my story that you don’t like and decide to not read it.

Also, the tag, “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat,” exists for a reason. Hell, all of the tags exist for a reason.

But in the case of Janeway and Chakotay, there’s often a lot of space around them, and yet they’re glued to each other.

And it’s not just any closeness, it’s something intimate, very intimate… they’re always looking at each other as if they’re going to kiss, Janeway is constantly looking at his lips, and Chakotay is always behind her like a shadow, I don’t know how they don’t trip over each other 😂🤌🏻
